- One of the most important things to be considered when travelling in the back country is bedding. You have to have a balance of protection from the elements and packability. Often, the bedding that we would like to take in terms of comfort and protection from the elements, is too large, too bulky, and too heavy, so concessions have to be made. in this video, we look at some of the options that allow us to have the sleep that we need while on the trail, while still being portable, packable, and reasonable.

I admire the men who do it. You have to commit to it, 100%. Not something you can half-ass, unless you're really rich and can pay somebody to care for the animals. Then I suppose you could just mount up and have one of these guys running the show, and you just do what he says, until the snipe hunt.
Always made me scratch my noggin when the Hollywood cowboys would ride out of town with a thin bedroll and itty bitty saddle bag, then magically in camp have a coffee pot, iron skillets, metal plates, mugs, a whole wagon’s worth of supplies. When they arrived in the next town a change of clothes which looked like they’d never left a closet/hanger.😁

Very valuable information for anyone, cowboy or not. If you get up and fix yourself a $15 restraunt style breakfast , the last thing you're gonna want to do is work! In my construction days I learned to eat a light breakfast and lunch. Much of your information could apply to motorcycle touring as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. That knowledge could save someone's life. It could apply to emergency vehicle kits as well if you get stranded.

I know this is a little different but was reading “The Book of Camping & Woodcraft” by Horace Kephart this morning and ran by this fitting quote. As I am getting older and have went through some major medical shit including brain and spinal surgery from a line of duty injury, and then going from 600lbs to 200lbs now.
“This matter of a good portable bed is the most serious problem in outfitting. A man can stand almost any hardship by day, and be none the worse for it, provided he gets a comfortable night’s rest; but without sound sleep he will soon go to pieces, no matter how gritty he may be.”
Im new to the channel, watching in Colorado, ive watched I'll bet 30 videos in a few days. I don't even own horses but i do custom leather work on the side and have a close friend who raises mustangs and breaks and trains them and wants some tack repairs and builds, I also help with cattle drives yearly on a atv but rather be on a horse. So why not learn tack from a cowboy! I'm literally watching the bedding video right now, I elk hunt in back country in Colorado yearly and this Canvas Bed Roll is a game changer! My goal is to get horses again, had them in childhood, learn, come to the school and one day be able to pack a elk out! Dewayne your a broken mold my friend, not many like you anymore so it's refreshing to listen and learn from you even if someone doesn't own a horse, they going to hear something they need to hear, just like I did a week ago! For those looking for options, I’m 55 and I’ve done many different types of camping. I used to work for the forest service and you would get a paper sleeping bag and that’s it to go sleep on the forest floor. At 18, I could make that work. Those days are long gone.
My latest setup is a big Agnes “treated down” bag with a built in sleeve for an inflatable pad that slips into the bag underneath. Since it’s built in, you can’t roll off your pad at night while your sleeping. Treated down isn’t the same as regular down and can get wet to some degree. If you look at the kuiu brand hunting gear, many of their jackets use it. This is very high end stuff. I also have a sierra designs 3 person backpacking tent that takes minutes to erect but big Agnes makes great tents too. I find a three person tent, nice for one person as you have space for your gear inside.
All my gear packs up very small as it’s intended for backpacking and I’m beginning to get into adventure riding on a motorcycle.
The stuff I’m mentioning is the expensive route. I’ve gotta hand it to Dewayne “no padding” it and actually getting some sleep. That would be a handful of advil with my coffee if I did that.
Like Dewayne said, there are many options. There are also some discount retailers like sierra trading post that can save you a ton.

I keep a sheet with my wool blanket just because I know the difference it can make to increase the insulation properties. I can only imagine what effect adding a canvas top cover will do. Have never done that … yet. :)
Yeah I use my wool blanket as a Pancho and I use it inside my sleeping bag unless it's hot then I pull it up and use it as a pillow.
yeah; purpose is to "Be Out There". great summation. Never mule packed in; but in early teens , started packing a wool blanket, a old rubber gasket(from oil field) & saddle pad. I still have that wool blanket for these 50+ yrs. Great video tip! As always , enjoy & have safe trip back to Tennessee.

Cowboy bedroll. Put a 4” high density foam pad in it. I after my bedroll is rolled up, I wrap it in my mantee.
A lot of this has to do with age…..when in the Marine Corps in my 20’s & 30’s I could sleep on a bed off nails and sleep sound…now in my late 40’s, it’s geared more towards this. Currently I sleep on a cot. Condition yourself…don’t get soft!
Love your channel. I have learned a lot. I'm about your age .....58. When I lived in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Idaho, I had a couple of sleeping bags and was on the ground. I had a duffle bag that weighed about 80 to 85 pounds that I carried with everything that I needed. I seen the back country and did what I liked and it was tough because I was a disabled vet. I can't imagine taking a bedroll like yours with me and the people I was with. Now that I'm older and have more issues, I would probably do what you're doing. It was tough but I can tell you when you're carrying everything in those 80 pounds are rough. I walked into bear country after hitchhiking with my pack and had one friend with me who also carried his pack and we didn't see another human being for 98 days until a ranger came upon us and told us about a rouge grizzly that had destroyed several livestock in the area where some sheepherders we're. We were about 8000 to 9000 feet above sea level where Utah Wyoming and Colorado come together. I'll always treasure that time but know I couldn't do that anymore. Unless SHTF I would do what I had to do to survive. Sorry about rambling Dewayne, just brought back a lot of memories from 1992. Take care and God bless. Your friend from Hopkinsville KY
LMBO...... I was at one time very comfortable with 75-80 pound pack/gear....... nowadays(I am 70) I have found 40-50 pounds is my comfort level......LOL..... ankles, knees, hips......LOL

This was particularly interesting to me due to the topic. Many decades ago I had custom bedrolls made for hunting trips. I designed them to be able to sleep in the snow on the ground. I never knew that you could buy anything like what you're showing. Thanks for the video.

This was the exact kind of video I've been looking for. Pretty much all the videos regarding canvas cutters aren't real review videos. Everyone just reads a script from the company, sprays it with the garden hose and tells you it's worth the money.

I relate a lot to the bear burrito thing. I ended up buying a military surplus sleeping bag with the zipper on the top, right down the middle. it's a heavy duty, non snag zipper designed so that you can shove your arms through the face hole (it's a mummy bag) and simply spread them, and the zipper will fly open. You can get out of it in no time flat. Plus, it's good down to negative 15 F.

I’ve moved to hammocks, but used a bedroll for quite sometime. I respect the bedroll and it’s good sleeping but the convenience of a good hammock is great.
Wouldn't trade my hammock for anything. I've even gone to making my own. If you can hang it beats sleeping on the ground for sure.

Excellent video. Many moons ago when I was a young Infantry Soldier, I’d use my protective mask as my pillow. Not perfect but got the job done. Efficiency counts.
I have exactly the same Hudson Bay wool blanket. Warmest blanket I've ever owned and my bones appreciate it.
Best sleep ever car camping in the Sierras was a Thermorest down sleeping mat, a canvas Cabelas -10 degree bag , a cot, and inside a 6 person Kelty tent with my wife outfitted the same. Our English Cocker slept on her dog bed with a wool blanket pilfered from the Marine Corps atop her. I left that warm bed to make camp coffee in old school percolater. My son and my two small grandsons(ages 2 and 4) are good campers. My grandson said “ Grandpa lives living outside better than teaching school. “. A win.

Saddle pads for bedding - what a great idea! I've been camping for most of my 62 years. But wow, I learned so much from this video! Thank you Dwayne!
That’s one thing that makes these outdoor hobbies rich, all of the skills and gear interact with each other. Mountain bikes got me into backpacking because I realized I had some stamina and some light clothes.

Hay Dewayne. I have a friend that has a canvas bedroll, who slept under a sunshade in the rain and worked well, I slept in my 2000 Delta horse trailer. I have slept in it on hunting trips in 18 degrees with no heat and used double fleeced blankets inside my canvas sleeping bag, which can get tight, but the warmth of that fleece is almost instant when it is cold. Those blankets were made just by buying the material and cutting them tying knot's in the two pieces but very warm. Just my 2¢. Love your stories and advice.

I have been using a CanvasCutter bedroll for a couple or three years now I love it...everything they claim. I throw in back of truck and use it on trips out west hunting while driving....out hunting with overnight stay. So simple, weather proof, comfortable, etc.... Great product. Definitely a truck or pack item...too big and bulky to backpack. LOL

Gotta admit...I do like my Cabela's setup of the big thick massive bag, the roll-up foam mattress, big boy cot, and Kodiak canvas tent- for those cold weather trips, but yeah, I am out of the elements. It has served me well in the eastern AZ mountains above 9000 feet.
I use a 4" futon mattress in my Prius on road trips. A cooler full of basic groceries and the absolute luxury of the KOA showers. That along with the aircon in the car? Some people think I'm roughing it. It's just another level of relativity.
I save an enormous amount of money in my travels. I have a good time. It's like you said. It's about getting out there. I've slept on a saddle blanket under a tarp next to my motorcycle on the California coast. I've slept in a tent in death valley next to my other motorcycle. I've cooked my meals from the food I brought with me on several trips. I've slept in my car with the air running, and I've slept on the ground under the stars at the height of the Sequoia mountains. It's all relative.
Get out there and live. I love this bed roll. Makes me think I'll encorperate some version of it in the overland rig I'm getting built up.

I do high backcountry pack mules. If you did want to go a little modern, I suggest taking an inflatable backpacking mattress in your be roll. You can get a 3" insulated one that rolls up tiny. I have foam mattress as well, but it don't do no good if it ain't with you.
Just came across this video. I live in powell on the other side of the big horns from Sheridan. Im going to be using a bed roll very similar to the one you have this October while elk hunting.
Not the bed roll I'd take for hiking but looks comfortable if you're out with the mule or the truck. Thanks for sharing.

The sleeping system for the military is pretty good and light weight might consider that for on the trail. Does really good. as long as u got a flat area its comfortable enough

If you can find a 4-piece military sleep system with the thermorest inflatable sleeping pad, it is more compact and could be packed behind your saddle. They work in all environments with the gortex bivy intact.

Hi Dewayne, my bedroll cover is from Sheridan Tent and Awning, one of the oldest canvas outfitters in the West. It doesn’t close with a zipper like yours, but folds in from the bottom, then the sides and closes with snaps and rings like a pair of chaps or chinks. Like you, I have several different routes I can go for sleeping, depending on circumstances, including a Thermarest pad on the light end and mattress on the other end of the spectrum.
One of these days maybe we can visit about C-spine surgeries; I like to joke that I’ve got enough titanium in my neck to build a fighter plane 😉
Excellent video. My thoughts…. I agree and also gave up on down sleeping bags decades ago after discovering how much they suck when even slightly wet. I’ve used a brown colored 4x8 Home Depot tarp just over my down sleeping bag, in order to keep dew or very light morning drizzle off of my bag and when sleeping on a cot. Or I’d use a tarp and run a rope across two trees and make a simple A-frame to keep light drizzle water off me. But most times now, I use a simple 2-man pop up tent to keep rain off of me, my boots, clothing and firearms.
Firearms in a tent. I do it all the time. Everything from a S&W model 29 or a Colt anaconda .44 magnum or a Glock 20 10mm with a light attachment and lead hardcast loads with a KKM barrel. I want a gun “right there” and where I can feel it on my body at night, inside the bag. Of course it’s in a holster to protect the trigger. Been doing it that way for 25 years now and we pack in to camp in non grizzly bear country, but plenty of black bears.
The sleeping bag I swear by is made by Kodiak Canvas and it’s called the Z-top model. It’s so unique, it covers the head, but gives HUGE wiggle room, unlike mummy bags. I used to use a military “extreme cold weather” mummy bag, but I always felt too constricted. With my 0*F Kodiak Canvas Z-top, it’s really warm, but breather. For the feet area, it’s baggy and tapered down there to keep more dead air space for warmth. If it gets colder, I use the Kodiak canvas quilt which goes over the sleeping bag and can be button fastened to the sleeping bag so it doesn’t slide off at night. The quilt adds an additional 30*F of warmth, making the entire bag rated down to -30*F. It WORKS in the most fridge temps...
On a side note and what most newbies don’t understand is that the temperature rating is NOT to keep you warm at say “0*F,” but keep you just ALIVE and from freezing to death. So in essence, a 0*F rated bag, is only going to keep you warm to about 20*F outside. It’s just rated to keep you alive (but very chilly) down to 0*F. So people must buy lower rated bags than what they’re expecting the night time temps to dip down to if they want constant warmth. Also the sleeping pad is a must. I like Thermarest self-inflating roll up types. I use a wide model one.

Reminds me of my swag. Although that lives on the back of the ute. Probably too heavy for a horse to carry. Found a wool and flannel sleeping bag to go with it. Sleeping in the field when we're harvesting means I can get more done in a day
You can go with memory foam mattress cover. They can be cut to size and they roll up really small if tied with a rope. Tarp wool blanket. Just my $0.02.
I have a military patrol bag and a small wool blanket. Yoga mat Tarp. Hobo set up.

Called a 'swag' in Australia. Set up properly they are more comfortable than the average bed.
