To be extremely successful a high IQ is helpful. However, IQ is only one facet of a high preforming individual. Emotional intelligence, mental toughness, motivation, perseverance, social skills, as well as opportunity all have significant impact on success. I meet many a high IQ scientist type that were social blivits, tunneled in vision and utterly unmotivated. Moreover, being very smart, often you'll find the world and its social trends very disturbing.

I’m originally from Colorado and my hypothesis regarding IQ is that one has to be smarter to survive in a cold climate. In the south you can just lay around and fruit falls out of the trees. In the north one has to plan ahead for shelter, food, clothing etc just to survive the winter.

I suspect that a lot of innovative culture associated with Minnesota originates from WWII. The federal government started by tapping the milling industry to produce food for the war effort. Minnesota was safely inland and had access to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Minnesota's role was expanded to include both light and heavy manufacturing for the war effort. After the war, Minnesota continued to host all kinds of research and development.

In the 8th grade I was exposed to speed reading, and the instructor commented that I retained 95% of what I read at high speeds. A psychologist had me take an IQ test at or about 45 years of age, and at about 50+ through Voc rehab took another one, and incidentally, about that time, a psychologist from SSA gave me a test involving the recall of numbers backwards and forwards. The test started with him giving me a colored object to remember and I recalled it after having passed the numerical recitation. My former father-in-law gave me a test which the company used to test executives, guess he saw something in me. Without going into the actual #'s, I'm closer to the ceiling than the floor!
