  • I am incredibly happy for “settling” on an MTH Big Boy. The MTH can handle smaller curves vs the USA Trains big boy. 4/23/20

    Layouts are never truly finished as we saw in this video. Great run with the Big boy.

    Very Nice Jonathan. I'll be picking up my MTH Big Boy next week. A gentleman I talked to has a MTH 70-3049-1 Big Boy #4014 coal fired version for sale, and he is holding it for me. After seeing this numerous times I can't wait till spring to get my backyard patio project started.

      Thank you! It’s now got an 18.5v internal battery and the capability to have an exterior battery. Inevitably the battery dies at the furthest point away and it’s too heavy to carry back. This way I can just plug a battery in and bring it home!

      N Scale Railroading I like N scale but and have had plenty. Actually just sold it all... This is so much nicer and easy to deal with.

    Thank you, your video gave me much needed information on my wifes G scale mth up4004 big boy. I run lionel, and have the 4014. What was additional to yours? The wiring for battery, is one. I love the layout. Everyone gives us different answers to diameter of curve, you not only say it, but show it. Found a great deal on 2 aristo eyes, and a left and right power switch by usa, $90 each. She paid 3k for her big boy 3 weeks ago, so I needed to know if it would navigate the wye and switches, so you helped me out

      You are more than welcome! It has the Wi-Fi DCS module in it so I can control it with the MTH app.

    I watch train videos on tv and like this engine....curves and the number drive wheels. My question is about curves being too fast in an arc and the drive wheels contact on the track or is it an opitical illussion? I keep noticing how tight a curve looks and wonder do the wheels have binding against the rail?

    MTH are absolutely beautiful, but everything I run uses Crest Revolution, to hard to convert

    Hey Jonathan,
    Is there a way to adjust the bell? I think a slower ringing bell would be more prototypical, sort of like my Lionel JLC Big Boy.

    Great video great train so this Mth one gauge has Wi-Fi in the tender and you use a battery so no need for the tiu and wifi module correct did the come from the mth factory like that

      @@TheeFishGuy I was just about to ask about the conversion. I was guessing it was ray lol.
      I’m in the UK, I have the same train, but it was in a sorry state. I had advice from ray and got spare parts from him, he’s a really nice guy.
      I’m looking to convert mine to battery, I have the receiver, battery and other items. Just gotta take it apart and do it lol.

      @@alltradesJack I have since converted mine to railpro. Much happier as now I can lash it up with my other engines and the battery seems to last forever now that all the MTH electronics have been gutted.

    Nice! Quick question: when operating from the app (3:35) does it have to be on electric G Gauge track in order to operate?

      Mine does not. It’s battery powered. So I believe as long as it has a power source it doesn’t matter.

      They are not, however USA Trains is do a re-release but F7’s this time. Not much difference. I don’t use anything LGB so I don’t know what R3 curves are, I’m sorry.

      This is the last year MTH is making them I believe. Then they’re going out of business. I don’t use anything LGB but these can run on 8’ curves.

    The USA Trains Big Boy is 1/29th scale. The MTH Big Boy is 1/32nd scale - that's a 10% difference in relative size. That's probably why the MTH version handles somewhat tighter curves.

    what DCC system and remote do you use for the outdoor layout? also can it run any train so PIKO, MTH, LGB and USA trains? can it run pretty much every train brand

      I am now using Railpro and battery power. My rails are dead! Railpro can be used in virtually every engine no matter the make or model.

    Out of curiosity how do you keep it from being vandalized or stolen it looks like you are in the middle of town. It's a beautiful piece of engineering on your part. What do you get in the box that comes with the train?

      We live in a small one stop light town. Everyone knows the layout in town and passers by often walk up and check it out if I’m outside running trains. So it’s all good. Just the engine and the tender are in the box.

      I don't know if you have done it as of yet but maby you can do a video of the specs of the BigBoy and and some background on this scale and how you had became to choose this over the other gauges. I think that would be interesting to people like me that are not familiar with G Scale.

      I only run the big boy with my iPhone/iPad. There’s a Wi-Fi module in the tender throwing out a Wi-Fi signal that the devices pick up. It’s like pushing the easy button.

      @@TheeFishGuy I'm not blaming you but WHY must the customer BE FORCED to download another stupid Fucking APP on their device to have fun with a locomotive ?? Apps are an invasion of privacy and are not necessary in the Rc Hobby environment !!!!...it is simply foolish, makes SIMPLE OPERATION more COMPLICATED and it's total overkill ! One should be able to simply take the Remote Transmitter and have fun without having to be forced to download anything !! I would never purchase a locomotive or anything that DEMANDED that I must down load another fucking APP on my device, and No, I will not use another spare device ! This is B.S. !

      @@franknapolitano9144 yes! They all can right out of the box. Mine is completely custom. I paid for the Wi-Fi module inside the tender and for hook ups to Airwire. AND it can run with straight up old school track power too!
