    Heather, you may already know this but it's worth sharing. Pick up a set of food saver canisters at a garage sale or thrift store. Or, you can buy a new set on Amazon for less that $20. I have the 3 pc set which are approximately 3/4 qt up to 2 1/2 qts in size. I think I paid a couple of bucks for the set at an estate sale. You can put commercial type jars inside the canister and use your sealer with the canister to seal the commercial jars. I'm talking about pickle jars, pasta sauce jars, etc. I love recycling those jars and saving my Ball jars for canning. Choose the canister that is closest to the size of your jar. I was amazed for hours finding things to seal up, don't take much to amaze me--LOL. There are videos on CZcams if anyone is interested in this idea. Love your videos and your precious family. Thanks for sharing!

    Hello lovely lady! I purchased the foodsaver jar sealer kit with a wide and regular jar sealer. It also came with the tubing. It cost $2499 plus shipping. Walmart sells the handheld jar sealer for $24.99. Thank you for sharing such valuable information. All the best!

    My Amazon order of the tube attachment for the big Food Saver just arrived today. I had found the small mouth attachment locally for $6 but then I am not shopping with littles, Amazon makes more sense for your situation. Can't wait for some free time later this week to get busy and have joyful fun like you trying this out. (PS I keep my home-grown dehydrated herbs in small mouth pint jars because my spice cabinet is too small for the wide mouth ones.) My working pantry has a shelf of 36 half-gallon dry-storage jars--it will be so cool to have the air sucked out! Thank you for being so fun to hang out with and showing us this neat toy!

  • @lylymongeon
    @lylymongeon Před 7 lety +36

    Love your excited energy! I have both the regular and wide mouth jar sealing attachments and I had issues with the regular mouth where it would seal but it would pull the lid off (unsealing) when I removed the attachment. I read somewhere if that's the case to put on 2 lids/flats on the jar. That prevents the attachment from going down over the jar too much therefore preventing the lid from getting caught passed the rubber gasket thingy inside. Works like a charm. I put two lids, it seals and then when I remove the attachment the other lid is just sitting there. This in case you encounter this with yours. Not sure if this is an issue for others or just mine, yet still it works.
    I also saw somewhere that to rehydrate fruits that you want more in a natural uncooked state, the best method is to put the dried fruit in a bowl/jar with half fruit and half water and put in the refrigerator overnight. This damages the fruit less than soaking it in hot/boiled water for rehydration.
    Keep the dehydrating videos coming. Am loving them.

      Renting or buying an ozone type air scrubbing machine (depending on the size of the area) can get rid of especially bad, lingering, source-identified smells fast. Of course, the source must be eliminated or removed first. Won't help with, say, dog or cat pee if the dogs, cats are still there or the carpet and flooring is not cleaned or ripped out 1st.

    Nice to know this portable jar sealer is\was also available if my FoodSaver Professional sealer breaks. I have the two jar sealer sizes I bought to go with the bag sealer and like the smaller regular jars so much. The trouble with that inexpensive accessories is that it takes too long to suck the air out, especially if you have a lot to do. But you can always upgrade if you use it enough.
    I just recently learned you can also use an automotive 'brake bleeder' hand pump to remove the air from the jars too by holding the nozzle in the jar sealer lid and hand pumping out the air. You've motivated me to start using the same brand dehydrator that I inherited recently. With the increased prices of food, it is well worth looking into these preserving options.

    Hi there. I love my hand held sealer. I buy the zip loc type bags for sliced cheese and lunch meat. One tip to remember. Keep an eye on the sealing section. If you do anything with any kind of moisture. liquid will gather in the lower section. You will have to keep it clean and let it dry completely.

    By the way if you choose to do food with liquid, this is the trick I learned with my first food saver back in 1989. Large coffee filters, about 4 or 5 folded like a fam. Fit it in the bag after the food is in. When you vacuum seal the liquid will be captured by the filters. Just be careful of the amount of liquid.

    To open the jar, poke a small hole in the center of the lid to release pressure. You can then reuse the lid by putting scotch tape over the hole. You can just pull up the scotch tape the next time and keep using the same lid over and over.

    have severe arthritis in both hands and nerve damage in the right one from a failed shoulder part replacement....my hands are often very inflamed and either very hot or freezing cold. Recently I tried 2 1500mg of moringa capsules and I don't usually recommend any supplements that I've tried in the past, but I am noticing a big improvement. Regular anti inflammatory meds usually bother my stomach and the pills you take to help with this hasn't made the stomach problems any better. If your hands keep bothering you this may be an option...Brad from Big Family Homestead recommended these and I thought it's worth a try.

    I can't wait to see those pineapples and marshmallows dehydrated. I spend a lot of money on trail mix with dehydrated pineapple and bananas, it would be great to be able to start making preservative free snacks.

    May I suggest you head over to the food saver website, and sign up. They will send you a coupon code for 10% off (takes up to 3 days to get it). That way when you decide to get the regular mouth sealer, or possibly a full size food saver (they offer refurbished for a good savings), you have the coupon to use.

    I have 2 food savers and love them both. I vacuum seal just about anything. I bagged and sealed tons of celery last night. Tomorrow my husband and I are going to cut up and freeze 2 large bags of carrots from the store. We did a bunch this past winter and they are almost gone now. We do carrot sticks and also make them into little round shapes for soup. I don't even blanch them anymore. Do you dehydrate all your veggies? I would like to try dry store also, but don't have any jars. Did you say your jars are poly plastic? If so, where can I find some to buy?
    Thank you for your video, I get excited like you do when I find something that works really good, it's so fun!! Stay safe

      No. Not in my opinion. Those are things you have to continually buy. Plus, im not a fan of having those lay on my food. They aren’t necessary. This is easy, quick and a one time expense, thats pretty inexpensive. 🙂👍🏻
