  • How I use a hole saw in a drill press to cup the ends of 2X4 wood track ties which will then be fastened to 1.5 inch PVC rails for a backyard roller coaster. Note that the cupped ends are 0.1 offset to the upper side of the track tie, so the joint is stronger and the main wheels clear the track ties better.

Just curious but have you ever tried using a 2" forstner bit? I was thinking that you could probably drill all the way through. If it wasn't deep enough you could use a short drill extension. Not sure if that's really a good idea or not. Any thoughts?

Worth a try probably. I believe a forstner bit chews all of the wood away, more violently, whereas a hole saw removes a relatively small amount of wood. So the final hole saw surface might be more consistent, and have less edge breakout. I would want to clamp the wood better with a forstner bit. More risk of injury.
