I was there at Woodstock and watched this live in August of 1969. I was 22 years old. Wonderful memories.
You have memories? Not enough drugs! 🤪
How far did you travel to get to Woodstock and how many friends were you with?
I’m jealous, I would have loved to have had that experience. I was on the planet but much too young to even know about Woodstock. My brother-in-law used to tell me I would’ve made a great ‘flower child’ ☮️
@@MrChristbait there was plenty there.
@@leonardshevlin7260 from Manchester Connecticut. 3 friends were with me.
The guys singing the background part are actually their bass player and guitarist. He normally had to women who were part of the band but they had to stay behind because there was only enough room for the musicians themselves so they were improvising. Having seen him on stage a couple of times, I can testify that he was truly a force of nature.
Joe Cocker never held back. He was all in. He was still great going into the 2000 teens.
...the moment Joe Cocker took half a million people to church...sings with his whole body
2 day backup on the NY Thruway so his backup singers couldn’t get there. Still made it happen
TV show "The Wonder Years" theme song. Another song that stands the test of time.
👀is that right?
@@THEJAYYSHOW czcams.com/video/hLHhekjG2vI/video.html
Yes- I love the show Winder Years! Fantastic show and phenomenal classic song!
you just watched history young lady..
❤🔥🔥🔥
WOODSTOCK WAS THE GREATEST COMBINATION OF PEOPLE AND PERFORMERS "EVER"!! IT IS SOMETHING YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE IF YOU WERE BLESSED ENOUGH TO ATTEND...SOME OF US WERE!!!!!
We sure we're
Were
She was left speechless for a hot minute! A soulfull masterpiece of a cover.
It's was a cover of a Beatles song that was on Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Ringo sang the original.
Can’t wait to post that reaction
Just a small Beatles tune.... a message that is universal...inspirational for other artists ....
I was there!!!! He had us mesmerized. I turned 14 that day. Ran off to Woodstock with 2 friends and trust me the beating I got when we got home was worth it. Would do it all over again. He was unique.
Fun fact: the band ended up singing background vocals because the actual background vocalists missed their flight. The Raelettes (Ray Charles background singers) sang on the original recording.
I knew someone would post this info. Did a better job than I would have. Also, didn't know about the raelettes. Thanks
I didn't know that..thank you.
Honestly was not a fan of the way they sounded on this performance. They tried hitting the high notes but couldn’t quite get there.
@@Ant-bm1qk I like the energy and historic importance of this performance, but mad dogs and Englishmen is the best sounding. I think every cut on that album is the best performance
they were better, thank god the raelettes missed, we wouldnt have this master piece
A stunning performance. Loved your reaction.
You MUST do a reaction of John Belusi (on SNL) doing this Joe Cocker imitation. BRILLIANT!
I read somewhere his backing singers got held up in traffic. So those guys covered it.
You becoming litterally speachless is EXACTLY the reaction this performance 😉
He was just getting started in this one at Woodstock. He improved this version later. He had a long career before he died. He does this song the best.
This Englishman had more soul in his little finger than most other artists in his era or since. This was at "Woodstock" Rock Festival" 1969 in upstate New York. Estimates of 500 to 700,000 people were in attendance.
"With a Little Help from My Friends" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, from their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and sung by drummer Ringo Starr.
Now ya need to hear the BEATLES VERSION of this song.🌷☮️🌎🙏🎶
Best cover of a Beatles song ever!
One Million % right:)
It is truly great but I'd go with Spooky Tooth doing I am the Walus...........
Eleanor rigby by ZOOT, it's a wonderful cover too
Agreed! He also did an amazing job with "Love Is Alive". I love both his and Gary Wright's version.
💯 agreed he also covered she came in through the bathroom window really well also
his backing singers didn't make it for the concert, so the guys filled in. it is called improvisation.
I think they were stuck in traffic, on the NYS Thruway! For a week, or three 😉
@@RobRager apparently so :) He does the concert series under the banner of "Mad dogs and Englishman" with a live stage performance that included "who is who" in the rock business including Leon Russel. Way better sound and video quality.
The back-up singers were stuck in the huge traffic jam cause by Woodstock, so the band had to sing.
Thanks Ringo and Joe,Paul,JOHN and George.
☮️💙💙💙Joe!!!
I grew up with Joe Cocker's music. He was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice & dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. He recorded a few Beatles' songs "With A Little Help From My Friends", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" & "Something". Other hits were "Up Where We Belong" (a duet with Jennifer Warnes), "Delta Lady", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Cry Me A River", "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter" etc.
I love his sound
@@THEJAYYSHOW When the Beatles heard his version, they said it was his song. The guy singing the falsetto lines, was filling in for a missing female backup singer.
@@THEJAYYSHOW Congratulations on over 103,000 Subscribers. Well deserved as your reactions just get better and better with just a few , subtle, quick pauses so you never ruin the flow and rhythm of the song.
Excellent.😀
@@fridaylong2812 Out od 230 Beatles originals, this is the only one that I prefer to the original.
@@Isleofskye I love both versions. The Beatles were very choosy about who they allowed to cover their songs. They choose right!
I saw Joe at the brand-new Niagara Falls Convention Center (Now the Seneca Nation Casino) in Niagara Falls. He was so drunk he staggered all over the stage, lost his balance multiple times but never fell, and his pants were completely split up the back, pink tush clearly visible. And his performance was entirely unaffected, he was great!
A great version of a Lennon McCartney Song. Joe was from my home City of Sheffield Yorkshire UK.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've been listening to this for 40 years, it's a classic.
"I got a letter for my Fred." It"s in there. Great reaction.
Conducts the music with his whole body and soul, just can't contain it - thank god he could sing and share it with the rest of us mere mortals ❤
I agree 💯.
Joe was feeling the Holy Spirit on this one ❤️.
There's a story behind Joe Cocker's rasp. Apparently late for a gig and not wanting to let his audience down, Joe chewed through a mountain to cut down the journey time. Some of the gravel from that fateful night remained in his voice. Joe cocker is also unique as he is the only known human to have their soul in their mouth. Great reaction!
Thank you so much 😂
🤣🤣🤣I love this story ♥️🔥
@@jennyboo9604 Thank you :)
Nice!
@@THEJAYYSHOW Joe Cocker was a straight up G back in the day. He soaked up some Ray Charles game and then he got poppin 😏
Your silence said it all!
This was originally a Beatles song but Joe Cocker took it by the scruff of the neck and wrung everything possible from it.
He has the traditional raspy blues voice, this song has the blues and Gospel sound.
One of the greatest things put to film. Amazing.
He had female background singers in the band, but they were stuck in the massive traffic jam on the NY Turnpike. The guys stepped in and did a good job.
The funny thing is that promoters of Woodstock heard of Joe Cocker but never knew what he looked like. They thought he was a black blues singer. The moment he finished his song, which was the last of his set, rain started pouring down.
Joe was a big Ray Charles fan.
About 100 years ago, I wanted his boots. And I still do🤣🤣
I saw Joe and Hendrix about a month b4 Woodstock in L.A. I was a huge Hendrix fan but honestly Joe stole the show. 😀
Great great song one of my favorites 🥰
❤❤
Sheffield legend.
The Grease Band here (if my ancient memory serves) are: Henry McCullough, guitar: Alan Spenner, bass: Bruce Rowland, drums and the unseen, but definitely heard, Chris Stanton on keys. As mentioned the band contributed backing vocals as the girl backing singers were lost to the Woodstock road chaos. I’m a huge fan of The Who and their Woodstock performance is excellent, but the act that stole the show in the film (of course I wasn’t actually there!) for me was Sly And The Family Stone. Boom-Lakka-Lakka, Boom-Lakka-Lakka!
That’s Stainton. Damn auto correct!
That's a cover of a Beatles song and the guys who helped arrange Joe's version and played on the studio recording are John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin.
Joe Cocker makes "With a Little Help from My Friends" his own with this performance from Woodstock. "You Are So Beautiful" was his big hit in the seventies. "With a Little Help from My Friends" is one of his signature songs. His 1970 live album, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, ranks high on the list of great concert albums. It featured a top notch horn driven blues rock band with a backing choir of a dozen voices -- "Feelin' Alright" and "The Letter" are a couple of stand out tracks from it. Rita Coolidge, Donna Washburn, Claudia Lennear and others provide the backing vocals, Jim Price launches into a bebop trumpet solo on "The Letter" that Bobby Keys picks up and carries forward in a sax solo for the ages. Check them out when you can.
Don't forget "Delta Lady".
Because of the outrageous traffic going to Woodstock, his backup singers didn't make it in time for his performance. That's why his guitar players are filling in and doing an excellent job.
Awesome. Loved him for decades. Sadly missed. Rip the great Joe Cocker.
OMG, how I miss those days.
This is a song Ringo sang on the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album in 1967 as a light bouncy tune. Joe changed it in 1969 into a heavy blues type thing. this performance is considered iconic by mu generation. All people your grandparents' age were there. You should check out Country Joe McDonald's Woodstock performance of Feelin Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag and learn how we felt about the endless years of carnage of the Vietnam War. He had the whole damned 300,000 Plus crowd singing with him.
Listening to music since 1958, this time the late 60s were the best regarding music. So glad I was able to have grown up then. This performance was top tier, love it!!
That was definately a better time and place. Absolutely Amazing performance!!
Nobody was moved more by music as Joe. People thought it was a disability that made him move that was, but all it was was the music.
My parents went to Woodstock, and they were about 40 feet from the stage when Joe Cocker performed. They had heard his music before the concert, but they had never seen him on tv, so they didn’t know what he was like as a performer. My mother was in nursing school at the time, and she got worried because she thought Joe was having an epileptic seizure.
@@Mike-rk8px I was 18 yo at the time, living in SoCal. I had heard about Woodstock and was going to go, so I hitchhiked up to SanFran thinking I could catch a ride from there. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this was the time that psychedelics were becoming popular (sugar cubes), along with potent strains of weed and hashish. So unfortunately I missed the concert, but fortunately I still had a great time (I think). Still, I am sad that I missed it.
It’s great your parents went, and I know they still had a great time, and we’re proud to say ‘we were there’.
The late, GREAT Joe Cocker. 'Nuff said.
The live performance of this from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen's tour is a religious experience!
It's an incredible performance!
This performance moves me,every time
Joe has "soul epilepsy" lol. The music moved through him like he was a tuning fork. The male Janis Joplin. Joe normally had female backup singers. They didn't get to the show on time (or something like that), so his bandmates did the best they could to fill in. Check out the studio version for a better quality audio.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney both said this is their favorite cover of a Beatles song. The backup singers were supposed to be females. They got stuck in the massive traffic jam leading to the concert at Woodstock The guys singing backup were a quick add-in. They are members form different bands, but honestly can't remember which ones... The album version has females...
always love to hear this performance
This was my fav live vocal for years , untill i heard Disturbed / The Sound of Silence
Believe this was at Woodstock. This was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 FIRE! To me this time the late 60s was,the best time for music. I was too young to attend Woodstock but to see all those great groups, singers there!! Im aware of the terrible conditions that occured but at the age I was then would of overlooked it.
A moment in time, like no other. Everytime I watch this performance I'm so in awe of the pureness of Joe's interpretation of this song. His range and depth of emotion delivered to us is on par with a gift from The Almighty.
the sixtie's....you really had to be there, nonstop amazing
The look on your face ! My face has been like that since I saw it onstage in person. The girls that were supposed to sing the chorus got stuck in traffic, so he had his band sing falsetto instead. And if you ever tried singing falsetto, you'll know what a great job they did.
I really don't know if there is a better live performer. He is always on point.
One of the best songs ever, sang by one of the best voices ever.
I love watching him. He literally “becomes “ music.
Woodstock not just a hell of a concert, this movie is hard pressed to be beat.
The one, the only…The beautiful….Joe….Cocker
On the record version he has soul sisters singing the backups. Backups sound better on that but this is a cool version. I love the B-3 Hamond organ on this
The back ups got stuck in Woodstock traffic.
Check out THE WHO "See Me, Feel Me" from Woodstock.
The who 👀
@@THEJAYYSHOW yes!
You will love Joe Cocker’s rendition of “The Letter” on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour.
OMG "Mad Dogs..." "Space captain" "cry me a river" "blue medley".....
It doesn't matter how long it takes to get there as long as you get there! Some of the performers at Woodstock and Monteray were already well known, but many of the artists were shot to instant stardom. If you would do reactions to every performer at Woodstock and Monteray, you will see everyone who was anyone back then.
Your speechlessness speaks volumes!
This performance at Woodstock launched his career. Iconic performance. Rock history in the making. Peace
I love u Jayy! From ur first reactions till now, u still get that What the Holy Heck is THIS look from the 1960s!
Only now u know more of who was who! ❤❤
Great.
After the song, I absolutely /loved/ your expression- could almost hear the cartoonish, "tink-tink... tink* as you blinked your eyes. Same way I imagined I, and most others, looked when we first saw this performed.
Another fantastic, historic performance from Woodstock is Santana doing Soul Sacrifice. Find the long version if you can. You will not be disappointed!
❤Joe. RIP🌹
RIP Joe
This is such a great cover that it was used as the theme song to the iconic, nostalgic drama The Wonder Years, made in the 80s about the 70s. Every week, I'd hear this song before the next episode of the show. Looking back, it was really underrated and the song fit perfectly.
The great Leon Russel playing guitar on this. The studio version was Jimmy Page. Shows how much Joe Cocker had respect from his peers.
JAYY, you need to watch the movie “Woodstock: 3 Days Of Peace And Music directors cut” on CZcams. There were so many excellent acts at that show, but it was also much more than just music. The movie is an experience you’ll never forget. You can also get the DVD or Blu-ray with all the extras.
Of course, with 3 days of music from 32 different acts, there’s only so much they could fit into a movie. But the performances in the movie are all incredible. Jimi Hendrix was the last one to perform, and the movie only features edited versions of 3 of his songs, but can watch the movie “Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock” on CZcams for his full concert. This was where he played “The Star Spangled Banner” and it was a very big deal at the time because of the way he played it.
Great version of a great Beatles song.
Ringo Starr,right?
Has the spirit in him!
The grease band behind Cocker was fantastic. Later they did Spooky Tooth.
THANK YOU for making sure it's the Woodstock video!
And this is the first time I've ever seen this channel lol
This song was written by the Beatles and originally sang by Ringo Starr on the sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band album joe cocker to another level
First time viewer. I would have suggested you first get familiar with the Beatles' OG version of this song. Having that in your ear would give you some context to understand how unique Joe's version was to hear back in the day. Same applies to many of his and most other artist's cover versions of popular songs. Some just cover a song, others make it their own
Luv this tune!.......................on a rare occasion I don't feel offended by a Beatles cover!! well done Joe! :)
He not only feels it - he was really pumped up - you can see it. At an artist you know and feel to do everything you can do. His performance was definitely pure adrenaline for him, full of drugs to get through it. He knows that he must give the best as he can - and at this time it was the best and today it`s history. Well done Joe !!!! Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
"Ya better feel it Joe" haha! You're fab! 🤣
He has a fun song called “you can leave your hat on”. You should check it out!
My mother met him as he was came supporting his friend, my cousin's husband, whos in the music industry, when my cousin was dying. He was a wonderful man who had a birth defect that affected his arms. Looks to me to be a form of cerebral pacey. His son was born with very severe birth defects. I love this song and this man!
Woodstock 69 baby!!! yes!!!!
Felt like you was in a church recital- just amazing 👏
This is my favorite song and performance by Joe. Nobody had to tell Joe to feel it! 😂. He sang with his whole body like Janis Joplin💜 Woodstock was a live outdoor multiple day music festival which has a full video which I know you would enjoy and appreciate Jayy. So many famous artists in their prime.
There were so many artists who gave superlative performances at Woodstock in 1969. And of course Joe Cocker's rendition of this song is wonderful. But because of the by logistical difficulties of reaching a rural area of New York state when 400,000 people turn up for a music festival, most Joe Cocker's 30+ ensemble from his "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" never made it. This is what it sounds with the whole musical ensemble:
czcams.com/video/n6splB7acXc/video.html
Yes,Joe and Janis!🎙🎶👊
The backup singers didn't show up so the band members had to stand in! Like Janis Joplin, Joe could split his vocal cords to produce two notes at once. You may recognize this song, it is a Paul McCartney/Beatles song. They had their own huge hit with it. The Beatles were very choosey about who they gave permission to cover their songs. Joe Cocker was one, Elton John was another. The man in the blue hat is Leon Russell, another very famous and wonderful singer/songwriter.
One of the most chaotic Festivals ever. No in ears. No autotune. And you have your backing singers stuck in traffic. 😂
There's another video of him where he has the female backing singers which I prefer, he still has the same energy.
