Class A units are what you want for level 1 and 2 level sterilization. As a former turtle freak I become intimately familiar with UV sterilization and I didn't even think about using UV units made for aquariums,I used the ones for home water treatment(culligan). Today there are far too many knock offs that at best only perform clarification and barely level one sterilization if at all,but there are quality units if you know where to look. Great info Dan as usual!!

I use the Mean Green Killing Machine, 24w on my 135g and also on my 75g. Comes with its own power head that runs slow enough that it actually works at removing the green water problem. I have on a timer so it only runs 12 hours a day. Just replace the UV tube parts when it dies.

When did you first get your Class A UV sterilizer? Did it come with the house or did you install it when you got into tanks? Are they common with homes using well water?

It was part of the system when we moved in. Most "softeners" are just that. The UV and the neutralizer are add ons for a more thorough system.
