It only dawned on me recently from seeing footage from the Kings Cross underground fire that in the first few seasons the cast were wearing the same uniforms as the real London Fire Brigade were on that evening

Drama have made so many cuts/edits, to comply with a pre-watershed broadcast (particularly butchering the 1986 pilot), and to fit in more adverts (80s & 90s TV only had two ad breaks in a 1hour show), that you really need to see the DVDs to get the full experience of both the drama and humour.

money unfortunally. Shows like this cost a lot to put on, we now live in a world of product placement in shows and unfortuanlly many classics such as this just don't fit what those who want to advertise in, no money coming in, no show. Its cheaper to make lots of shows that aren't up to the same high standards with the product placement in. If shows don't make money, they don't get made.

Apart from James Hazeldine, Gareth Thomas and maybe Sean Blowers, I suppose none of them were especially strong or versatile actors.

Yeah, the soap opera aspect got a bit silly, but still I very much enjoyed it when they got down to action with the accidents and the fire fighting. The music during the action kept you pumped up too. Amazing how they filmed all of those scenes around London when there would have been real action like that going on around the city too.
