Limited Run Games has Lost Their Way

  • Limited Run Games specializes in publishing physical titles with all of the DLC included to ensure that you can play your game well after the system is no longer supported. They have branded their reputation on this so far as to put "Forever Physical" down as their slogan.
Long time game collectors and preservationists have looked to Limited Run to keep the digital age from permanently warping the gaming landscape forever. When you buy digital you don't own your games. When you buy physical, especially from Limited Run you own it forever.
But Limited Run is starting to crack and has offered a handful of games that are either missing DLC because it came out after the game was produced or games require a constant internet connection to unlock content that's already on the disc.
This comes at a time when Ubisoft is set to remove games that you've paid for already like Assassin's Creed Liberation which is being removed from the Steam store and won't be playable even if you already bought the game.
With the announcement that Doom Eternal will not be complete on the cart, it's now apparent that Limited Run is just like every other modern publishing company.
The worst part is that Limited Run Games does not communicate these issues at Point of Sale and they try their hardest not to let anyone know after the product is delivered.
In this video I showcase three times that Limited Run Games has failed to live up to their Forever Physical Ethos and never bothered to let me know directly.

All of their releases the past 2 years or so and onwards are unlimited preorders. You have ~3 months to decide if you want to buy the game or not. Most of the games they sell don’t have the demand to hit store shelves so the only way to get them is through a limited run, which is the entire point.

    • @kicapanmanis1060
      @kicapanmanis1060 Před rokem

So go buy the digital version then if you are worried about this "false demand". Everybody that wants one gets one.
I mean you seem to think you can do a better job than LRG. Why not put your money where your mouth is? Make a company that can release niche games with wide physical releases and see how that works out.
Also physical game being widely available in the past didn't stop piracy so not sure why that would change now.
LRG is by no means perfect but they are at least trying to fulfill a niche demand and even then they get shot on it. Things will be much worse without them.

    • @lyianx

They are limited run because it would be financially a bad move to produce more copies than they can sell. This is why major publishers dont want to sell physical media anymore and are embracing digital distro. The whole entire modern industry is an embarrassment. The major platform holders all hawk anti-consumer policies and products. And LRG, at this point, are a common garden variety publisher who aim their stuff squarely at collectors. Actual videogame preservation involves software piracy and jailbreaking hardware. There's a new sneaky thing that I've noticed Limited Run doing, likely to drum up sales on their bigger releases. In the past, anything Limited Run has distributed has always been released on Tuesday, whereas Fridays were reserved for games that were part of the LRG numbered set. In the case of both the recent TMNT and Tetris releases, both were distribution titles, but both were released on Friday. Also, on both games, Limited Run completely omitted the disclaimer that goes on every distribution release: "This is not a numbered release, and thus is not a part of the Limited Run Games Collection. We are distributing this title on behalf of ________. Missing out on this release will not compromise a complete Limited Run set." Plus, the image for the PS4 copy of Tetris has the LRG numbering on the spine, even though it won't actually have a number when people get it. This all may seem like a minor thing, but there are people who only collect the numbered set, and they're inevitably going to get tricked into thinking these two games are a part of it.

It’s a great concept for a company, and I always saw it as a small business opportunity really for anyone with the start up money and proper research and connections built. There will always be people like myself wanting physical games...including the patches and extra stuff from after release makes it a surefire winner as an idea to back. I’ve been gaming since I was 6, over 40 years ago now. So I’m very old school with everything. I still buy dvd, CDs for my music, etc. Never owned a song digitally. Currently I own 98 PS5 physical games with 5 on the way, 4 from Play Asia who is a Godsend. But I know they don’t always come with patches included, obviously new day one games never do. At least many Japanese devs actually release completed games not requiring day one patches, or they’re ver small if needed.

I'm 26 and I'm pretty old school myself when it comes to games. I noticed this issue with gaming since the 7th Console generation (PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii eras). I never liked digital only releases and games having dlc with no plans of a complete edition of the game down the road, because eventually these services or support for these games will go down one day and in a hypothetical situation, these companies or devs could shut down at any moment. What would we be able to do in a situation like that where we are in this digital only gaming space, or when we still have games that have no hard releases? It's bad enough single player modes in games and local multiplayer in games are dying and are not being as prioritized as PVP and server based games, but making gaming digital only on top of that? I can't.

I remember they posted on Facebook something like "should we place the order now or wait until the Farewell chapter is complete?" Most people said wait, but some didn't care either way. I would think that with preservation being the goal, they should wait a few months just to be safe. I'm always think preservation are not solely in physical media (because it's still very susceptible to manipulation like in WATA case or Limited Run ) ,but combination of both. Or even better is what GOG did with DRM free digital copy that can be backup In any form you will and installing it again on a whim, no need login to store or need any internet connection.

    • @aquapendulum
      @aquapendulum Před rokem +1

I have said this over and over again. Physical has never been and will never be the solution to game preservation. The most effective preservers of video games are not your discs and game cards, it's digital pirates. They nailed the key factor that actually keep games playable on modern hardware: Mass digital redundancy with neutralized DRM. Digital redundancy solves the 2 final preservation roadblocks that physical media still bump into which is deterioration (disc rot, bit rot, scratches, etc...) and artificial scarcity.
The only final boss left of game preservation is live service games, which require mass global mobilization to lobby lawmakers to shorten copyright expiration periods so that the ability to reverse-engineer them comes sooner. White-box RE will never be enough. It has to be legal to look at the assembly of game executables and directly analyze them.
Also fuck Nintendo. Bottom of the barrel out of all the companies that are hostile to game preservation.

Limited Run has really baffled me, they got a Shantae figure coming out and they're advertising the heck out of it and there's so many big problems
1- It's using a 3D render so, you're not even really sure what you're getting. I say this is huge problem because the render shows through the pants, so I contacted them asking them if the pants were actually solid or cloth. It took 5 emails to get "It's made of resin like the rest of the figure" and I'm like ....are you SURE because the render is not leading me to believe that.
2- All of their adverts for it are showing the figure with a bunch of Standees - that do not come with the figure, you can't even buy them if you wanted. Yes, they say on the side that it doesn't include them...But the only way they're advertising this all over the internet is with standees that you- seriously, cannot buy. They are limited to the PS5 discontinued collectors version and you can't get them in any other way. The other ones they show off to the side- ALSO are not the default option.
Every other figure seller 90% of the time will photograph the ACTUAL product and not use the render. I really want the figure, but dropping $135 on something that I have zero idea on if it'll actually look like the render or look good in anyway shape or form? Yikes.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You nailed all of the points and criticisms with LRG and how they truly have "lost their way". Their physical games that they are selling today are targeted at a different market than gamers who want to preserve their games. They are only in it to sell to collector's who are willing to pay exorbitant amounts for collectible/limited items. Collector's editions have shifted from figurines/metal objects, to plastic, and now to paper-only. Talk about cheap. And then on top of that, the "bubble mailers" (ie, plastic bags) put all of the risk on the customer just like you said. And then on top of THAT, they refuse to fix shipping damage if (A) you didn't purchase the box for extra money (B) you didn't purchase the "shipping insurance" for extra money, or (C) they decide it's not worth their time or would cost them too much. Pretty sure what they're doing with regards to damaged products is illegal. In the US, all states enforce Implied Warranty laws, which state the customer is entitled to their product in the condition in which it was purchased. Brand new comes with the expectation that it is new and there is no damager or defect. You can't have a defective product and tell the customer "sorry, but it's yours now." That's not how this works. And also, asking for the customer to pay extra for a shipping box is extortion. Basically "we know this will be damaged or defective, but it's our policy to not help you unless you pay us money up-front and above the cost of the item". Oh and have you ever had them bless you with the rare event where they will replace your item, but it's on your dime? You pay for shipping. Talk about class acts.
I would love to see the day when people rise up and sue their asses into the ground, and go bankrupt. I think we all know it'll never happen, or at least they'll get off with a slap on the wrist, but justice would be sweet.

Glad to see I'm not the only one starting to feel this way... I've overall had great experiences with the company over the three or four years I've been buying from them, but I've grown ever more disillusioned with the company ever since River City Girls launched alongside the digital version and got quality of life patches after launch. A few of my friends say I'm just over obsessive about things, and to a degree I am, but it felt kind of gross.
I still buy the occasional physical copy of a game I really like or want to have that way, but I've lost a lot of passion for the service and have long since accepted that LRG is just a publisher like any other now. Nothing more.

I think the problem is that LRG has gotten to big that they just don't care anymore. I was a huge fan of LRG until the streets of rage 4, they weren't dumb they knew it was getting a worldwide release but they just worded their announcement and made sure they never responded to any info directly about it as to avoid any fault. Agreed their website is pretty bad now and they "offer" the option to buy extra shipping services when in the beginning they never did. I personally have really cut back on buying LRG, if anything more services with better care have come up & now I don't mind not giving them my money. Their customer service is pretty bad.

The one and only purchase of an LRG product was my Scott Pilgrim Complete Edition, the reason for it was that it took a very, very long time to get. Granted, this issue would not have existed if I had just ordered the normal edition since those rolled out faster, but still. I pre-ordered in January I believe, or the first week of it, and waited until the end of February for the pre-orders to finish... I finally got it at around end of July or Early August, which was annoying, $66 (with Tax), and I finally got Scott Pilgrim.
What I heard was that the promised Soundtrack was being made by a separate company, and they took longer than expected.
And during that time, the game went on sale on E-shop multiple times, $7.
I'm happy I own it, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I also buy games from them because I like to own physical games that I can play whenever. I agree with pretty much everything you had to say, we buy physical games from places like LRG because they are suppose to be complete and DRM free. what should also be mentioned is the pricing policy.
At the time they said that their games would not cost more than the download version.
    That has changed drastically.
They also don't charge 10 dollars/euro more but often almost full price for a download title which costs 10 or 20 in the store.
The shipping costs have also increased significantly.
If it's so expensive to produce, why wasn't it to begin with? What has changed?
There was also no explanation for it. Have probably noticed that they simply raise the prices because the demand is so great and they can make more profit.
