    Welcome to the Third Time Around Ranch. After living in the country most of our lives we still felt like something was wrong. We kept talking about getting back to the basics of life and taking care of ourselves like our great grandparents did. So instead of depending on stores for everything, we bought some land in Alabama where we intend to build debt free on a fixed income and become as self sufficient as we possibly can. We are happy to have you join us as we carve out a new way of life for ourselves and our youngest son.
    We would love to hear from you, you can leave us a comment or if you'd rather we love to receive mail.

    I have the same mill , and to me it’s impressive it did so well on that 24 inch log. The HM122 is designed for 22 inches. Too bad about the new blade hitting the post. That never happens with a dull blade LOL. Anyways , just one of those 2x4’s will just about pay for a blade considering the prices nowadays at the box stores. If you could even find one of comparable quality.

      We actually finished the log with the same blade. Got a couple of wavy cuts but we have a jointer, planer and table saw. Either way they will work for a rabbit hutch. It only costs $8 to sharpen a blade so we got at least 30 blades out of that log, lol

    I am surprised at the low horsepower. I have the Frontier OS31 and a Kohler 14 horsepower and that is barely adequate. If the motor ever fails I would definitely up to at least 20hp.
    Also. You need to get that mill up to crotch height. All that jumping up and down adds to the workload and time. My trailer was expensive but all the jumping up and down and crawling under just made me realize it was worth it.
    Good luck and eat your Wheaties!

Today's lumber prices, that sawmill is a good thing to have. That is a lot of hard work and especially all the extra work and time in filming it for us.

    I hit a log stop the first week I had my mill, also while milling a too-large log. Since then, anytime I have to turn the blade guard out of position, I use wooden log stops. I don't go back to the steel ones until the guard is back in correct position. Haven't hit a log stop since.

    Imagine going to pay full price at Home Depot for the amount of lumber you could cut in one 8 hour day with this thing. Hell, I couldn’t afford just the 2x4s it’s crazy. The only reason you need the wood inspected is so everyone can get their money, it’s no secret this rough cut is thicker and straighter and stronger than that light bent up Home Depot crapola.

    Didn't yell, just cringed.. :) It also looks like your water is dripping on the blade guide rather than the blade itself..some was making it to the blade but it might not be enough. It would certainly help the blade last a bit longer, as long as no more log stops are hit. ;)

    I saw in this episode that Eddie accidentally cut through the metal support post (or he didn't).

    • @pstoneking3418
      @pstoneking3418 Před 2 lety

      I've ran into mine 2 times now. Destroyed one blade doing it. The other I was able to sharpen it. It'll take awhile to pay for them but I purchased woodland mills sharpener & tooth setter combo. If you've careful sharpening them you can get 5-6 sharpening out of a blade. After about the 2nd or 3rd sharpening you need to check the teeth settings & set them if required. If set properly they clear out the cut better allowing the blade to travel through the cut easier.

    Just a quick question. Earlier in your video the mill head appeared to be shaking. Is that normal or is that because of the size of the log and what the log is or what you think maybe the cause? I’m looking to buy one of these mills here soon and since I’m new to using a mill I thought I would ask. Thanks

    • @ThirdTimeAroundRanch
      @ThirdTimeAroundRanch  Před rokem

      It does shake sometimes but not all the time. I think it is a combination of a dullish blade and the size of the log. Our mill wasn't made for the size logs we put on it. If we had known we would end up with such large logs we would have gotten a larger mill. But that being said we absolutely LOVE our mill even after having it and using it for over 2 years.
