And parents cry into the news cameras, " Why my child?"

Did anyone else learn, like when your skipping rocks, if you took a piece of ballast and chucked it as hard as you can at an angle against the inside of the rail it will ricochet back n forth between the rails making sparks ?
We would entertain our selves for hours doing that.

And where are their parents? It's sad how kids just wander around with no supervision. Then when something bad happens they'll want to SUE!

To be honest, I grew up in the days that elementary school kids could wander around town without fear. I would walk to school which was about 3 1/2 MI away. I would also hang out along and walk along the railroad tracks. Of course, the railroad track that I had access to was about a 10 mi long tangent, up on a levy, and you could see a train coming for hours. My mom and dad taught us kids that a fast train could create a suction that could pull you into it, and that if we saw a train coming 5 mi away, we headed for the hills. We would never play chicken with it, or just lollygag alongside the track. Dad had railroad friends that I would talk to and tell me about the dangers of being near a moving train, and us kids, that meant anywhere even near the ballast was a danger zone. Kids playing around railroad tracks it's nothing new, been going on since the Best Friend of Charleston first got up steam.
That said, I don't like seeing kids playing around tracks today because the kids are stupid and their parents are even stupider.

Looks like they are old enough to know to get off the tracks when the po po is coming.

When we were kids we put any and everything on the tracks and the train won every time.

I grew up hearing that putting a penny on the tracks could derail a train. Never saw it happen. I have it on very good authority - not that I was involved - that a Coltrane didn't care if a piece of ballast was on the rail, either. 2-4-4t add a park I learned that even "light" locos did not pay much heed to anything short of a railroad tie on the tracks.
