      New gardener here! I've been watching so many of your videos and I have learned so much. You're doing a great job, thank you. I notice you don't advertise good dirt plant food anymore...any reason?

      Hi Tammy - Congrats on starting your garden, and thanks for the kind words-I'm so glad our videos are helpful! Good Dirt works well, and I still use it from time to time, but I now recommend fish emulsion. It’s also effective and more accessible and affordable for most folks. Let me know how your watering goes this summer!

    I think the only true way to heat-proof the garden is to use shade cloth Kim. Down South where I live it’s 98-104 degrees with 70% humidity. I can drip continuous water to my plants all day and they’re still wilting in direct sun.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 29 dny +6

      Hi Rock - whew, you have brutal heat - shade cloth is definitely a lifesaver as well as keeping your plants well hydrated. I'll be doing another video on shade cloth in the near future. Stay cool!

      And mulch. I never thought it would help. It keeps moisture in for days, even in 100+ temperatures. And it saves me from burning and suffering the heat. I just need to get my shade cloth up before the scorching heat sets in.

      Hi Ramona - go for it! You'll be amazed at how much time it gives you back. The drip kit I linked in the video description has the parts you need (aside from the time) to get you started. Start with a few containers or just 1 raised bed so you don't get overwhelmed and you can add on to your system as you feel more confident. Let me know how it goes!

      Hi Esther, shade cloth is a lifesaver! I love my 2 gallon blue can, I can see why you use one too. Much less refilling. Do you have drip installed in any of your containers?

      Esther, if you're not already, the storage tub watering will save you time as well as the drip trays so the water can wick up from the bottom. Hope this helps!

      Hi SARW - the blue watering can is a fun one - it's heavy when full but helps me stay in shape! My moisture meter has lasted for years - definitely a good investment. Pretty soon things will really start heating up there in Central Cali and you'll need it! Hope you have a great Sunday!

    Sadly most apts dont have spigot outside. The only thing i can do is watering can, or hose attched to kitchen sink. But its annoying
    I have to attach & take off

      @CaliKim29  Před 28 dny

      Hi Angelarum - I bet it is annoying! Good for you for having the determination to grow your own food in spite of the challenges of a small space. The storage bin watering method or using drip trays so the water can wick up into the conatiner will save you a lot of time. Keep at it!

    Did I miss something or just not understand where the heat proofing comes in to play. Even when damp, my soil gets very warm. I feel like cooler soil would be better.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 29 dny +2

      Hi Moon Shadow - these watering techniques will help your plants survive and thrive in the summer heat, so they keep producing instead of stressing and dying. Warm soil actually benefits warm-weather veggies, helping their growth. By keeping them well-hydrated with these strategies, your plants will continue to flourish all summer long.

    I accidentally added pine mulch to my veggies. Normally I got hardwood mulch. Will the pine affect peppers and tomatoes that are in my grow bags?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 28 dny

      Hi tbone - some say that unless pine mulch is composted or aged, it may contain toxins, fungus spores, and other unwanted elements into container soil. Additionally, the resins in pine bark can cause nitrogen to leach from the soil as the mulch breaks down over time. I suggest doing your own research and then decide if you want to remove it. Keep me posted!

    I have a few garden beds and it's been really jot lately. I get home from work at about 1130pm and usually water my garden then. My question is, my soil is from last year and I did add fresh to it but it seems to dry out or just run off, the top is wet but no matter I've slowly unlimited.It doesn't explain to me all the way down.Is there anything else I can try?
    I do not have a drip irritation quite yet.But I will eventually

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 28 dny +1

      Hi April - First off, I admire your dedication to watering at 11:30 pm after work! That's a serious commitment to growing your own food. It sounds like your soil is hydrophobic. Try loosening it up with a hand rake, then water and work it into the soil as far down as you can without disturbing the roots. After that, slowly drip water around the roots to help them absorb the moisture better. When you replant your bed, mix water into the soil before planting, install drip irrigation, and try not to let the soil dry out completely to prevent this issue. Hope this helps-keep me posted!
