  • Cal Ripken AKA The Iron Man, broke an unbreakable record, and changed the shortstop position forever! He showed the baseball world that a shortstop could both field and hit at an elite level. Many remember Cal as an offensive shortstop, but he was also a defensive wizard at the position! A man of a thousand stances, Ripken made the necessary adjustments that led him to a prosperous 21 year career.

@@Cam23 He was never a super dominant player like some but his accomplishments and all time stats make him top 25 for me at least for a list with no pitchers included . His offensive numbers, defensive consistency, all time games played record are insane considering he played one of the most demanding positions on the field. I'd take him over Ozzie Smith any day considering he hit 431 home runs to Ozzie's 28. And he wasn't as good a defender but he was close.

I’m a lot older than probably most of your readers and times sure have changed. In the past you were encouraged to tough it out and play past the pain… Now Days they are being more careful with the players. They’ll put people on the IL for a lot of things that used to seem minor.. Don’t know if that’s good or bad but your Cal Ripken video was sure inspiring.

I got mildly emotional watching this. As a lifelong O's fan growing up watching baseball in the late 80s and 90s, Cal was a hero for all of us who grew up in the region. I have been able to meet him twice, once during his streak week after a game. He stayed HOURS after the game signing autographs. I treasure that signed photo like no other possession I own. Cal is the last from an era where sports players could still be role models. No scandals, nothing. Just hard work. His Roberto Clemente Award was more than deserved. To this day, he still models that through all of the knowledge he pours out in his baseball camps for kids. There will never be another #8.

Lot of my friends liked the power hitter, steroid user, and intimidator type.
It's sad that baseball doesn't have players like him in the game anymore, the sport has become more math based, micro- managing, rumored tanking, and a sport that does not market itself too well anymore.

@@Cam23 Crazy that his WAR was 11.5 in his 1991 MVP season, on a team that finished 67-95.
You also forgot to mention that he had a .336 career batting average in the postseason, granted his teams were there only 3 times (1983,1996, and 1997). In 1996, they upset a 99- win Cleveland team. The Yankees dynasty was kick started by a fan that reached over the stands for a home run, it was against the Orioles in the 1996 ALCS. Which is unfortunate.

    Great video on Iron Man!
Now, cover the insane prime of Sammy Sosa! He I believe, has the MLB record for most 50+ homer seasons, most 60+ homer seasons, most 3 homer games in a career, most 3 homer games in a season, is probably up there for most multi homer games in a season and career, and I think he set some kind of record for consecutive seasons with 40+ and 50+ homer seasons. Dude had crazy RBI production for a number of years as well.. it’s been awhile since I have looked up his numbers but I am positive that I am missing a lot.

This guy was an absolute dude especially in the early 90s. Total stud. The final season dragged on with a slightly nauseating amount of love. There was sooo much love, so many fluff pieces, do it for dad, etc. it was everyday on espn. I’m glad that I can forget that silly season and remember him for what he was. He was totally better then Jeter in my opinion and it’s not close. His fielding alone was far superior

That's when I started to pay attention to Cal. I was and am a Blue Jays fan but Cal's career was special to watch. The shortstop and second base position were defense first, bottom of the order kinda guys so Cal was unique

One interesting story is that, going into 1995, the strike was still going on, and MLB planned to press forward with replacement players. The players union actually gave Cal permission to cross the picket line and play in that scenario, so he could keep his streak going. Fortunately, it didn't come to that, but Cal says he wouldn't have done it.

I was born the same year as Cal's rookie season. My uncle met him at some event through his job somehow during his rookie year and got me an autographed pic that i still have.
Considering his recent passing can we get a "historic level" video for the great Brooks Robinson? RIP Brooksie.
There was a myth in Baltimore in the mid 90's about Cal beating up Kevin Costner. The story is that Costner was in town filming a movie around like 1993 and met Cal and his wife. Costner and Cal's wife had an affair and Cal caught them so he beat up Costner and got arrested. Meanwhile the Orioles bail him out and delay that evenings game for several hours with a power outage at the stadium, all to preserve "the Streak". It was like a local conspiracy theory at the time. Some people were convinced it was true and that he had friends in the police department make it all go away.
