It was actually a poem inspired by the Greek revolution of Independence that was turned into our national anthem. If you look at wikipedia you'll find a very good translation of the anthem. For Greeks, it can bring us in tears because we can relate to it a lot. The music remains standard, obviously every choir sings differently but indeed it's beautiful

Greece is indeed a sublime country where world's culture comes from. It is enough to visit for a few days Greece to understand that. It is enough just to recall the thousands of Greek geniuses from Aristotle, Archimedes and Alexander to Maria Callas and Elia Kazan. There is no other country in the world which contributed more to the progress of the mankind. Everything else said about Greece is simply rubbish and pitiful.

Kipling's translation is bad. The sword in question is ambiguous, it could be freedom's dying at the edge of a sword, or freedom wielding a sword. The translation hides the poetry of the song. Instead of "O Divinely restored," the opening lines are simple: I recognize you from the edge of the dreadful sword. I recognize you from the look in your eyes, that measures the earth with hope. The bones of the dead are unearthed, and now like the first time we met, Hail Hail Liberty, Hail Hail Liberty.

Beautiful music. Yet not really fitting the essence of the Greek soul. I'd prefer something both measured and dramatic, as authentic Greek music is. This one is too smooth, too frankish, too Ottonian - and also not fitting the heroic and poetic lyrics. I am saying this not only with all respect to Greece but precisely because I know and love Greece.
