  • Last week the bass world lost another all time great in the king of fingerstyle funk, Mr Francis Rocco Prestia Jr of the band Tower Of Power.
    If you’re a bass player and have never heard Tower Of Power or any of Rocco’s lines then you’re missing out on one of the most influential funkateers out there and some of the coolest bass lines ever recorded.
    Today, in this video I’ll be breaking down probably the most famous of his lines by way of the song What Is Hip? This is a great test of your stamina and technique and I’d recommend using this song as a study piece for developing bass players in any style.

    Thanks for this rich and timely tribute to a great and inspiring musician, I have had 'there's only so much oil' on my music stand for ages and am slowly mastering it. a lesson by you would be a major help on this really funky tune which
    also has great lyrics.

    I think I might have heard this song somewhere over the course of my life, but never noticed its greatness until now, so I thank you for that!
    I've been avoiding getting that fingering technique down because I always felt more comfortable with double thumbing for some reason, but that has it's limits at times.
    So this is the song that's going make me get that technique down and you did a stellar job of explaining how to! Again, thank you!! 🙏

    Excellent Lesson. I had worked on that tune the last weeks with the instructional video Fingerstyle Funk. Your tips are very usefull. The index finger is the key to not messed up the whole thing. The second line have a sort of variation, Rocco plays this line one time like you, the second time he go higher to the 11/12/13 frets in the G string. Another interesting lines of Rocco are Oakland Stroke (Simple but hard to play in time), Space for Bass from his solo album, or some others from TOP (So much oil in the ground for example). Thanks Mark and have a good weekend with your Baby and partner. PD: I gonna miss the old cat (Rocco)

  • @recordingthebeatles6672

    Loved it. Great video. I can't believe I turned down a free ticket for a Tower of Power show at my high school in 1973. But I saw them many times after that. I've been practicing singing this bass line for about 50 years, though I'm a trombonist. Live, they would kick this song off at a much faster tempo, though that never seemed to be an issue for Rocco (when you could see him). It would be great to see you show his technique on some of his wild 'way up the fret bar' techniques later in that song.

    I remember hearing the T.O.P. album on the P.A. in a record store. I immediately went to the counter and bought what was playing without even knowing the band. Some fun Tower of Power songs to look at would be To Say the Least You're the Most, You've Got to Funkifize, or from the 90s era, Soul With a Capital S, or Believe It.

    I’m still getting twisted with the right hand fingering. You said to switch to start the 16th pulse with middle after the low open E, then how do you land the octave on the middle finger. It lands on the index. This song is twisted and so am I.

  • @Dellerss
    @Dellerss Před 3 lety

    Apparently I'm weird, but I've never understood how people can do the string skipping part properly. Even after 14 years of playing bass I just can't do that part where you have to switch between the A and G string. Physically impossible to do for me at the song's tempo, no matter how much I practice. Luckily I'm able to play anything else I want to, though, it's just that one part of this particular song.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 3 lety

      I did and that’s part of the lesson. Only the lower note is muted in the bass line. You might want to watch his own Fingerstyle Funk video. You can see and hear exactly which notes he mutes in the line. The upper notes jump back and forth so muting isn’t required.
