- čas přidán 8. 10. 2020
- Last week the bass world lost another all time great in the king of fingerstyle funk, Mr Francis Rocco Prestia Jr of the band Tower Of Power.
If you’re a bass player and have never heard Tower Of Power or any of Rocco’s lines then you’re missing out on one of the most influential funkateers out there and some of the coolest bass lines ever recorded.
Today, in this video I’ll be breaking down probably the most famous of his lines by way of the song What Is Hip? This is a great test of your stamina and technique and I’d recommend using this song as a study piece for developing bass players in any style.

CZcams ads: SCOTT BASS LESSON
LOL! At least it's not for man-grooming.
Yep Scott Bass is viral.
Rocco was always kind to me through the years. His nickname was Thumper. God be with him.
RIP Rocco! My life changed for the better when I discovered T.O.P. in high school, and I finally got to see them live 2 years ago (I did get to meet the horn players in Boston back in 2001)
So happy you’re doing this one. I just started looking up lessons on this song yesterday, I really like the way you teach, so thank you for reading my mind. Cheers
Awesome video. Super clear and straight to the point. Thank you!
Thanks for this rich and timely tribute to a great and inspiring musician, I have had 'there's only so much oil' on my music stand for ages and am slowly mastering it. a lesson by you would be a major help on this really funky tune which
also has great lyrics.
Fantastic video as always Mark, thank you for this one.
A great lesson, as always from you. Best bass lessons on You tube!
I think I might have heard this song somewhere over the course of my life, but never noticed its greatness until now, so I thank you for that!
I've been avoiding getting that fingering technique down because I always felt more comfortable with double thumbing for some reason, but that has it's limits at times.
So this is the song that's going make me get that technique down and you did a stellar job of explaining how to! Again, thank you!! 🙏
Thanks for the great lesson, Mark. Love Rocco’s line for ‘Come on With It’ from the T.O.P. Album.
Great lesson ! Thanks!
Unbelievable stamina & consistency. Quality playing bud.
Always wanted to learn that bass line ! Thanks for the lesson and I mean lesson, you are a Taskmaster but I hung in there. Saw Rocco here in Toronto about 14 years age. The band killed ! RIP Rocco and thanks for being you!
I love this line - Rocco is such a loss - going to get busy with getting this under my fingers. Cheers for the lesson.
Excellent Lesson. I had worked on that tune the last weeks with the instructional video Fingerstyle Funk. Your tips are very usefull. The index finger is the key to not messed up the whole thing. The second line have a sort of variation, Rocco plays this line one time like you, the second time he go higher to the 11/12/13 frets in the G string. Another interesting lines of Rocco are Oakland Stroke (Simple but hard to play in time), Space for Bass from his solo album, or some others from TOP (So much oil in the ground for example). Thanks Mark and have a good weekend with your Baby and partner. PD: I gonna miss the old cat (Rocco)
Amazing playing as always bro 🙌🎸🤘
Loved it. Great video. I can't believe I turned down a free ticket for a Tower of Power show at my high school in 1973. But I saw them many times after that. I've been practicing singing this bass line for about 50 years, though I'm a trombonist. Live, they would kick this song off at a much faster tempo, though that never seemed to be an issue for Rocco (when you could see him). It would be great to see you show his technique on some of his wild 'way up the fret bar' techniques later in that song.
I remember hearing the T.O.P. album on the P.A. in a record store. I immediately went to the counter and bought what was playing without even knowing the band. Some fun Tower of Power songs to look at would be To Say the Least You're the Most, You've Got to Funkifize, or from the 90s era, Soul With a Capital S, or Believe It.
I've always liked Stroke '75.
Simple : thanks for all your videos Mark !
Rocco was so much in the pocket they had to brush the lint off of him 🤣 RIPRocco
Thanks a lot, now i started building my funk base for better inner feeling)
Thanks Mark! you re just great! ;)
Another component of TOP, which made their sound absolutely unique, undeniably and incomparable. Rocco’s playing was pure ear candy!
Thank you a lot, bro.
I actually got to meet Rocco in 2019 he came to my house to visit my roommate and I was starstruck. He was a very chill and nice man R.I.P.
Love it
Always wanted to learn the bass parts to So I Got To Groove.
Gd stuff Mark!! Working on your 25 slap groove challenge now!! Not my style cause I really like classic rock British 80's punk metal alternative/new wave 80's music. Coming to really enjoy the slap pop style. Def will try this one out
Mark, have you thought of developing a course entirely dedicated to fingerstyle funk 'a la Jaco , Rocco and Jamerson?
Yep this is what I wanted
Спасибо!!!Вы Супер!!!!!!!!
The Squibcakes (previously unreleased) recording has one of the greatest bass lines Rocco ever did.
"SQUIBCAKES!"
I would have trouble telling Rocco's line from Chester's bass organ pedals.
Mike Wayne great combination.
Was going to mention this but I KNEW someone would beat me to it.
Great lesson as always Mark. How about "I Got To Groove" or "Bump City" (Down To The Nightclub)
The bassline from 'So I Got To Groove' is a fave.
I just discovered these cats a few months ago...
Mind blowing funk!
Me too .
I saw them live in Manchester UK in 1974
yes sir
another cool Rocco bass line is Attitude dance, we would love to see you play it
Would love some speed building videos and right hand stuff in detail. This guys a machine. The original is not 110bpm though I don’t reckon, it’s a fraction slower.
ROCCO was a str8 genius with the 16th thing. His FEEL is just insanely hard to copy. It's crazy cuz some of the stuff isn't complicated but maaaan...trying to play it like him is seriously hard.
Wow !!!
Hi Mark, great lesson. Was wondering if you could do an analysis of Rocco Prestia's "Come on With It"? Cheers and thanks, Fred Jansohn
Dean town by Vulfpeck uses the same 16/4 as this tune. It takes amazing stamina to play it right
already covered Dean Town. By the way, its in 4/4
Great explanation. How about a breakdown of Pork Chops by Jon & Lee and the Checkmates?
Sparkling in the sand, please! RIP, Rocco!
That riff is similar to a line from Jaco Pastorius, he played it with ghost notes mainly... Super cool.
Eliot Minkovitch Jaco was influenced by Rocco. That’a where he got the 16th note funk from.
@@talkingbasslessons Aha, so that's where Jaco got that line from!!
I just listened to the original. He plays just behind the beat to get the funk groove.
Hi Mark, makes me wonder who's next, Sir Paul or Mick J?
Great lesson and another one could be on his muting technique. Rocco's style will certainly tests your insurance. Cheers
Won’t be Keef🤣
Three months of 2020 left . I think it is safe to say that there is room for improvement .
Please, make a video on Only so much oil on the ground
I still diggin on james brown please
RIP to the great man himself.
I’m still getting twisted with the right hand fingering. You said to switch to start the 16th pulse with middle after the low open E, then how do you land the octave on the middle finger. It lands on the index. This song is twisted and so am I.
Apparently I'm weird, but I've never understood how people can do the string skipping part properly. Even after 14 years of playing bass I just can't do that part where you have to switch between the A and G string. Physically impossible to do for me at the song's tempo, no matter how much I practice. Luckily I'm able to play anything else I want to, though, it's just that one part of this particular song.
please show "oil in the ground"
Let's have some mike Rutherford bass lines soooo underated cuz of being a guitarist. I know what I like is wicked.
Paul thorsby coming soon. I’m a big Genesis fan.
Are the backing track with lower bpms available?

HI
Is it dumb that I thought this was a Marcus Miller tune? xD
You've gotta mute those notes bro. That's the beauty of Rocco's playing.
I did and that’s part of the lesson. Only the lower note is muted in the bass line. You might want to watch his own Fingerstyle Funk video. You can see and hear exactly which notes he mutes in the line. The upper notes jump back and forth so muting isn’t required.
Amazing Playing, Mark! Very precise!🙂
Check out my Version of this song: czcams.com/video/WUMfAl3KrKY/video.html
It’s doesn’t sound quite right.
come on man... can you look like, maybe it's a little difficult to play?
