Please subscribe How to play 'What is Hip' by Tower of Power. Here's the current guitar player from Tower of Power, Jerry Cortez, showing how to play 'What is Hip'.
He was my guitar teacher. He introduced me to his music friends and was an all around amazing guy. Not to mention he is a monster. He was a monster when he was not famous.
I have known this lad since elementary school (sutter)…through College (a long time, agreed) and you have always been the only one I have known to be a true guitar chupacabra! You heard it in your head, felt it in your heart and translated it to your hands and fingers. (WOW). Yes, Mr. Cortez you were born with Amadeus notes and strings coming out of the womb. Never just a pentatonic, heptatonic, GIN and tonic, etc… you always make it your own. Be well old friend! Nothing but love, eh! Dr. J. (Ian Neon)
Oh man--Mr. Cortez, so tight, love his playing! He packed in so many of the necessary techniques for funk guitar and cool voicings in only 3 minutes? Crazy---good! Thanks!
my teacher in Santa Clara early 80's - all around cool dude ended up both moving to Utah where I took lessons again for a brief time 30 years after our early sessions which I still have some on cassette tape the power of the right arm. definitely his instruction patterned my play
Indeed, but I couldn't play like Bruce in a million years. I was fortunate to take a few lessons from him in his heyday with Tower Of Power. Each lesson was supposed to be an hour long. They ended up being nearly four hours each time. I kept trying to rap it up for his sake and he kept drawing me in saying, "Oh, just one more thing." Generous, to say the least. On top of that he was a wonderful gentleman. I am honored to have known and played with Bruce.
My new neighbor. A wonderful soul and man.
oh cool....say hi from Anthony, down unda ;)
he's so good, even the dog was watching
I just found out he lives in town, I am floored haha

Not quite how the original is played but still great
are those the biggest frets ever? What is that?
ha...yes they were huge frets
what could possibly have been more interesting for someone to look away at 0:34? And then get busted by Jerry too :=)
Ha. I'm a one man band, so checking the tech just to make sure it was working
