Yet another great video - thank you. The composition of your videos is so good. I personally applaud the service you perform by documenting so many places/things that are vanishing from the landscape. By speaking in a one on one way about what was and is gone (or in some cases soon to be gone) - you are leaving a piece of history that in 5, 10, 50 years people will be able to view and learn from. Whether it is urban exploration/abandoned retail - you do the best job I enjoy as you are so respectful, others could learn from your example.

It is hard to fathom how much money was wasted by Kmart to build these large boxes only to abandon them just a few short years later. Thankfully the one near me was converted into an Academy and Burlington and brought the abandoned building back to life.

Nate, I absolutely love this video. I'm 4 years older than you and I can remember every year right before school mom always took me shopping there for school clothes. I can remember when my kids were younger I would get theiirs pictures made at the Olan Mills studio, but I'm a cheapskate so I would only buy the advertised package. We still have a Kmart here in Somerset, KY but it is only a shell of its former self. In fact, Kentucky only has 4 Kmarts left.

With the gas prices going up now, I wound like to find a Kmart Express. I sure could go for some “Big Gas Savings” right now. My other favorite Kmart commercial of all time. After the last round of closures on April 8th, there are only 2 Kmart stores left in Arizona.

I'm from Pittsburgh, My whole life has been filled with stuff from KMart and Sears (from decades befor they merged) We in 1960s-1990s, Pittsburgh never heard of Wally World or Tarjay. We had KMart, Murphy's, Zayre and Hills. (Pittsburgh used to have Kroger and A&P too, "Big Bird“ wasn't all that big until the 80s, but Food stores are another topic). In our family, there ere was a shopping "hierarchy" then, A sort of General Motors (Chevy/Buick/Cadillac) scale that was in effect that I'm sure was unintentional, but it worked: KMart was Chevrolet, Sears was Buick and the local "Department Stores" were Cadillac. Everyday stuff (and we kid's toys and "play" clothes) came from Kmart. Us kid's "good" clothes, our parents regular clothes, Plus ANY major appliance and Tool came from Sears, as did anything for the cars. My Mother's "better“ clothes came from Kaufmann's (Macy's) or Horne's.

It was my first stop point when I travelled to the states, loved taking my time and wandering through it, lots of very nice items! I remember starting a Teddy Ruxpin bear, darn thing could be heard through the whole store, telling his story and singing! Amazing how long the little bugger went on, hoped it would stop after awhile, but it went on for a long while! Until he stopped, I could swear people were looking at me, giving me that, "It's all your fault we have to put up with that darn bears noise!"

I really enjoy these videos because it brings out emotions that I never thought i would have over a Kmart store. My family did not shop at Kmart very often but, losing a piece of history is always sad. The world changes all the time and lose parts of our past. It’s nice to be able to watch these videos and reminisce over times gone by. Thank you!!

Great video Nate!! I too was a Kmart shopper and when I was younger I would totally deny it. 3801 Harmont Ave NE Canton Ohio (Rt. 62) was my store; I grew up at that store. Layway was always a life saver; me and my husband got alot of our stuff for our first place there.

A fine tribute to Kmart and how special it was in your life. Can't believe that not one but two Kmarts failed at that location. Also d don't understand why they could not repurpose the Super Kmart into a Target (won't mention the evil W chain) or split between a Supermarket and another retailer like Marshalls or Home Goods or TJ Maxx? That building could have been saved.
The best videos are ones where you and Wallie and others tell how this store was part of your lives and growing up and how you feel a sense of loss. Don't be ashamed of shopping at Kmart. It should not matter where you buy clothes. But then again young people can be cruel. These make the best and most memorable videos, the ones I want to watch again.
There was a good repurposing of that hotel into a Hampton Inn. It's part of Hilton and at Hamptons you get free breakfast including waffles and pancakes and at some cooked to order eggs. Nice hotels and I stay at them to earn points for free nights. The Comfort Inn at the Carnation Mall is part of a frequency program and a lot of times has a promo stay two times get a free night. Sorry I'm still a frequent traveler and try to join the programs to build up to free hotel stays and flights

I'm not sure that 2 Kmarts failed there. Rather than that, The original Kmart (Goodwill) was a likely huge success and that led to a bigger Kmart replacement. The rest of the downfall of Kmart /Sears having little to do with any individual stores , And the rest is history. But I would not call the Original Kmart at this location a failure.

I’m a Kmart fan too. I grew up going to Kmart and also worked there when I was in high school. My store closed in 2016 and is still sitting abandoned. There was talk about it being turned into two businesses but it has been overtaken by mold and leaky pipes. So the future of the building is not looking so good.

I grew up with Kmart. My childhood Kmart opened in 1980 and closed in 2014 right before Christmas. They lost customers to the nearby WalMart built next to the mall. At Home moved into the old Kmart building in summer 2016. Until last year, Google Maps still showed the abandoned Kmart. They've since updated it to show At Home. Here is article about the closing: www.insidenova.com/headlines/dale-city-kmart-closing-in-december/article_2676f9e0-4413-11e4-ba20-eb55ccdc3a95.html

Also it's kind of nuts that they decided to repurpose the ancient Kmart building, but knock down the relatively new Super K facility.
Doing a little bit of reading, it turns out they had to knock it down due to a recurring squatter/vandalism/homeless problem. Also it sounds like they fell victim to a nearby Wal Mart.

I guarantee there is some tax thing written into the IRS code in volume 114, chapter 12, Page 523 that makes it make sense. Yeeting a new building HAS to be better for the bottom line. The Shaler, Pennsylvania Kmart has been standing since 1963 and is just NOW closing and there's no plans to destroy the actual building, even after it closes. 🤔.

They may have had to rebuild the hotel pool for a structural (leakage) concern, I have seen places that have been entirely replaced, but ended up being almost entirely like the original in appearance (I don't just mean on hisoric buildings, where it HAS to be like original). If the original design was still functional and attractive, Why not.
