happy days....just took delivery of my new steed, an '06 r1200gs with 34,000 k's and it has brand new Karoo Streets on it; i thought they wouldn't be much good for off-road and had already factored in the cost for more suitable tyres...now having seen this and read through the comments, i can spend the money elsewhere; soft luggage here we come! @@TheBikeStig absolutely no point in wasting money...i don't have any to waste; i'll find out how good the tyres work if it ever stops raining here in Vic; yep, i'm a woos these days; a 60 year old woos who hasn't ridden for a few years so slippin n slidin on wet red clay is not what i consider a fun day out on a 220Kg bike... it's challenging enough on a 115Kg single cylinder, full knobby tyred Enduro bike.

@@TheBikeStig yep...weather modification to block out the "suns harmful heating of the planet' is working a treat...we haven't had a clear sunny day in months; even succulents that we've grown here in this exact environment have died from frost this year which has never happened in 18 years of being here; insects are gone; barely any frogs; nothing will grow in our vegie patch...mankind is being systematically eradicated by those who think they have the right to control every aspect of our lives.
I have an XT1200 as well, and going to fit a set today, as I'm doing my first rally (Hogsback Rallye Raid 2022 - South Africa) next year, and want to try out these tyres for the rally.
Thats awesome, would love to hear what you think about these for rallying. I just did some off road on the weekend in some rough granite type rocky hills and had no problems. They perform pretty well for a tyre designed to be in between off road and bitumen.
nice , you may have sealed the deal for me on karoo str, hourse of review research, chappel 2020 shoot out on 80/20 tyres are anakee . pirelli str and shinko 705 however following their review to the score cards at the end led me to best in twisties = karoo street = my prime aim, with the looks, followed bt some function off road for the FYR1200 ( ill be lucky to do 5% off road - although this may change if drifting the thing is as much fun as reviews lead to believe) . any thoughts if lean angle and tarmac safefty is my main goal? i rode the karoo3 they suprized me with lean angle ability ( heavily critisized) being ok considering on my bmw scrambler but corner exits the TRC lights were often on. from New zealand - glad you enjoyed.
cheers mate, I've ridden on so many different tyres I am happy to settle for handling and grip and not worry too much about a little noise. I reckon you'll be surprised how well they handle lean on the tarmac, I ride this thing till the footpads touch with suspension wound up, and not a problem. Did most of the original testing of these in NZ down around Queenstown, what a great place for riding!
There is some noise with the Karoo, I think the continental is not as noisy but I am biased towards the handling of the Karoo which is why I stick with them
Nice review, but no mention of longevity? I am doing a 21 day road trip in late October 2024 on my 2017 BMW R1200GS Rallye, and was wondering if you could give me some advice? I currently have Pirelli Angel Gt2s on, and love them, but am sure that they won't be able to handle the dirt on some of these roads. I have a super sports background and love scraping my boots on corners... so I ride quite hard... even on the GS. I'm thinking of Pirelli Scorpion 2 or STR's or Tkc70's?/Tkc70Rocks for this 8500klm trip over 21 days from Brisbane. But I am very concerned about the 250klm of dirt roads within this 8500klm trip. but don't want to miss out on the awesome twisties in the other 8250k's Would these Karoo Streets last for 8500k's? Thoughts?
Great question, I am a deadset moron when it comes to mileage, I simply forget to track it and just put new ones on when they need replacing. I cant comment on mileage but if I am going to ride off road (not super hard off road I mean) personally I would whack on the Karoo Streets. Mainly because I know how they handle and feel, bit noisy on bitumen but they sure hang on when pushing hard on bitumen and can do the job in the dirt. I know I didn't really help, sorry about that mate.
Used with tubes (Honda Transalp 600) should i strictly stick to manufacturer's pressure? That would be 29psi (2 bar) for both (33psi (2.25bar) for the rear when 2up). Thanks .
hey mate, there are a lot of factors to be considered with tyre pressures, start with manufacturer recommendations and go from there, I'd be asking around or looking for tips from someone on the same tyres doing similar sorts of riding as a baseline too.
I’m considering these Karoo streets or the Dunlop mutant for my 2000 Honda VFR 800fi. I live on Manitoulin Island, ON Canada and our roads are terrible, falling apart tar and chip/chip seal and gravel with few nice paved sections. There are twisties but mostly long straight sections with big sharp turns I like to accelerate through. Often you’ll come around a corner and find fresh gravel with no signage. I plan on getting a dualsport bike in the future, but for now need to adapt the VFR to the road conditions, as I’ll never get rid of it. Any suggestions on the two tires or even something else?
Hey mate, sounds like an awesome place to live even with the bad condition roads. I am a fan of the Metzeler's but have not ridden on the Dunlops you mentioned so I did a search and they do look good. The one thing about the Karoo's is they are a bit noisy, but they handle so well on twisty ranges on the big GS that I will continue with them. I'd recommend doing some research on the Dunlops. That said, tyres are all pretty good today though I tend to stick with a tyres that I know has good handling characteristics, one thing less to think about.
Curious what you thought of these on the GS with respect to road noise. It is deafening on the OE Bridgestones from the front end. Thanks! Great review
Yes Bruce, rode on them for quite a while, even did a TKC80 versus Karoo 3 comparison. I Love the TKC70s on bitumen, they perform really well. I found the Karoo Street to be a better in the off road riding, and they are a fair bit quieter.
I am about to put the Karoo street on my Honda Rally 250 it will be interesting to see if i get the dreaded noise issue or not i am wondering how much is die to the bigger bikes having double the downward pressure my 300 pound'ish bike has? The other tire that interests me is the Avon Trailmaster, I am looking for a mostly street tire 80/20 for SE Asia that can deal with the crazy downpours and sketchy sand and clay on the tarmac as well as a bit of light offroading. I am excited to try some of these high silica modern tires, thanks for the review.
Are you aware any difference as it seems they are made by Chinese? On my research it shows Metzler is 48.5% own by the Chinese so product is not all made in Germany.
I thought Pirelli were bought into by the China National Chemical Corp (ChemChina) some years back. And Pirelli own Metzeler. That said, I have no issues with the quality of Metzeler or Pirelli personally, they have never let us down on our Superbike school bikes. And I know Pirelli tyres are run on WSBK and F1 race machines. As long as they maintain their standards I am happy to keep using them.
@@CostinP07 I am on 5800 miles so nearly 10,000 - Still quite a bit of tread left but the rear has started to follow the grooves in the road so I will change it soon.

My 2024 Honda XL750 Transalp came with these tires and they perform well but they are THE noisiest tires I have ever had on the highway.

yeah they make a noise for sure, most tyres with bigger gaps / grooves are going to be somewhat noisy. Im on my third set of these, I still like em.

no idea what that is, I don't believe it would be the tyre, I've not had any issues at all and found it steering great on the GS
Noise & limited rear tyre life are the only two negatives in my opinion. Otherwise they're great
