I've owned many Holdens but an LX Torana SL/R 5000 I drove once is the one that got away for me. Flares, hotwire mags, lumpy, that thing was like a bull terrier. Small, but all muscle and looking for a place to use it. It's still my "If I won the lottery car." My VE SS Commy, might go, stop, and handle better, but I'd swap in a heartbeat.

Fun fact: genuine LX A9X four door sedans did not have SLR5000 along the side, only on the rear spoiler. Any A9X sedan with SLR5000 on the side is a replica. That was so they could be distinguished from SLR5000's with optional flares. Bonnet scoops and flares were only on A9X's and were an aftermarket add on for SLR5000's. Originals (SLR's) have no flares or bonnet scoop.

@@1ihws As well as the A9X dad also had a yellow LX SLR/5000 both ordered together and from new when I was at the age (12) to want to know everything I could about 'The Green Gremlin' and what the differences were to his SLR and of course the obvious observation they forgot to put SLR5000 on the side, must have been built on a Monday. I was serious too because I had just been taught I thought about productivity and the car assembly production line was used as an example. I was too busy off in a dream about dads A9X coming down the production line because it seemed to take forever after it was ordered and all I remember is hearing our teacher saying "don't buy a car made on Monday because the workers are hung over or still drunk and avoid a Friday car because the workers are all thinking about getting drunk on the weekend." Teacher said that so it must be true so that's probably why it's left off.
Dad was racing bikes back then and was mates with or knew all the dealers and whatnot so I was given a complete lesson on how and why it didn't just look different but was different to the SL/R and the only difference between his and Brocky's is 4 instead of 2 doors.
Dad had ordered the lime green to match mum's Sunbird but after getting sick of the old man trying to speed things up he was offered a one off dark metallic green sedan that was originally ordered for the track in the company or sponsors business colour of whatever green it was. Looked bloody ugly to be honest with the silver SLR5000 instead of white on black for the rear spoiler. Anyway something happened and it fell through so they were stuck with this but ugly dark metallic green that no one wanted or could sell. I'm pretty sure it was ordered by McCloud Mazda in Albion Park at the time for Peter McCloud to race at Bathurst before the RX7 Mazda ready or available or something there abouts. Whatever happened he ended up cancelling or something happened and he got hold of an RX/7 he did a few Bathursts in, actually co won it in 87.
Sorry, long story short to get dad off their backs he was offered the green one with a discount and everything dad could screw out of them and deal was done. When dad sold it for double what he payed new he was sure it would soon be worthless because of the colour. He saw it for sale a few years back for 320K with the major selling point being the one off colour.
Not one that got away, one that was thrown away. By the way his yellow SLR5000 is still doing the circuits but still had the flares and bonnet scoop.

The reason why those V-8 Torana's were such beasts was because they were originally designed and marketed as midsize/compact cars and came standard with 4 & 6 cylinder engines (my first car was a '78 UC Torana with a 3.3L [202ci] inline 6cyl and 4 on the floor). They were reasonably light, nimble and sporty for the time even in standard 6-cyl form. However Aussies being Aussies & all, Holden of course decided to take the 4.2L (253ci) and 5.0L (308ci) V-8's from their full-sized models and then shoehorn them into the tight Torana engine bays, and thus the legendary Torana SS & SL/R was born.

Those of us who live in Europe recognize several of Holden's models as they have used Opel as a template for several of their models. Here I recognized Opel Commandore, Opel Manta, Opel Omega, it looked empty. looks like they had used Merceds as a model for one of the first pairs that were shown! Even today you see similarities with Opel and Holden!

G'day mate, love your show. I watch it all the time.
I just want to set something straight in terms of the UTE, full name Coupe Utility. Aussies will commonly "call a small or medium sized truck with a tray or bed a Ute" but in reality to be a proper UTE has to be CAR based, and in ONE piece, NOT car based and a gap where the well body or tray meets the cab, that is called a Cab Chassis. Now there's no Holden, Ford or Valiant the only companies who made the UTE It sadly Extinct😢

Sky Blue, performance front bumper, rear louvers, custom exposed chrome side sills, with after market two-piece Simmons mag wheels. It was in exceptionally nice condition overall. Sadly he had to get rid of it. I do miss seeing that VL.

You got Holdens but with Pontiac or Chevy badging. How the mighty had fallen having to import muscle from Oz.
Square Toranas [LH LX UC] are EH Holden size, 105" wheelbase and 55" track. Good cars in their day. BUT not much lighter than the full size car. Generally under engineered, gearbox was good for a healthy 6 as was the diff.. Just ok with the 253 but the 308 no.
All the Torana street guys then want to fit 10" wide wheels on the back [8s on the front] but without a deal of surgery they do NOT fit. I have this problem regularly with guys spoiling their cars doing so. I sell several period style wheels in 6 7 8 &10 widths.
GpC cars had to run full interior sans carpets. That car is a mock up as the original is in a collectors hands. I raced against it regularly in the 90s. Interestingly it was probably the last Torana racing on 14" wheels and the smaller brakes as it raced at Bathurst. Many of those cars morphed into Sports Sedans,, car with big flares and max 6 litre engines. I raced against several and drove one on occasion. One is back on the road still with the race engine!! Others are being 'restored' from parts of the original car and some just ended their lives as out and out Sports Sedans. This is genuine GpC cars. Quite a few GpC Commondores also raced as Sports Sedans.
IF you want to see a restored Bathurst winner,, 30 years ago! look at the ' Perkins Engineering' You Tube channel. Larrys 93 Bathurst winner has been restored by son Jack. A big job. I was involved with that car in 95-96 as it was updated to VR then VS and even the rollcage was replaced. It was track tested a couple of weeks ago.

What a tragedy that that stupid PM Abbott refused to bail out GMH when they struggled against the Japanese cars. If he had, it would have given Holden time to adapt to become more fuel efficient

Yeah aussie muscle cars are a bit different from American ones, American muscle cars have a more 1/4 bias. Where as Aussie muscle cars have a more muscle/sports car bias, 1/4 mile time is nice but also needs to be able to carve up a mountain road.
