Echidna kisses Roswaal in a flashback, and Subaru learns that the Sanctuary's true purpose was to protect Echidna from a new character named Hector. When Hector attacked the Sanctuary, Ryuzu sacrificed herself to activate the barrier. Roswaal may as well have sacrificed himself too, because Hector defeated him with little effort. Finally, Hector found his target, Echidna. The results of their fight is unknown, but Echidna (and Roswaal) both survived, and Hector was never heard from again. Beatrice loses her best friend as the barrier is activated. After learning about his past, Subaru confronts Roswaal and rejects his ideologies. The argument then evolves into one of the best scenes of this season.

The fact that Echidnas face is hidden for the whole episode is interesting.
Remember that what we are seeing is Subaru recounting Shima retelling her Trial, which itself was a reconstruction of Ryuzu Meyer's memories, parts of which are recreated or extrapolated from the Trial whenever there is insufficient information, and Shima has no personal recollection of said events as well as no way to discern which parts of Meyer's memories were colored by her preconceptions.
(Spoiler theories below)
Personally, I think that while Ryuzu Meyer might see Echidna through rose-colored glasses, this depiction of Echidna actually confirms my theory that Echidna's soul transference is flawed and incomplete. It does not clone the whole individual's mind, but misses bits and pieces. This means that the Echidna in the Tomb is actually an incomplete copy of the original, and it also means that Roswaal, who has been through this process over 10 times by this stage, is probably nothing like the original copy. I also don't think it is related to her Authority, but rather she did it with magical knowledge, which is how Roswaal has been able to copy and replicate the process.

How is everybody like "Is Hectors power like unseen hand?".
For me its pretty clear which general direction his power goes into. And it makes perfect sense thematically. Its gravity. He is Melancholy. And what is the result of gravity? Depression. An unstoppable force effecting any object and particle. Gravity could stop Al Goa, gravity could crush Roswaal and throw him back. Gravity is literally pushing his enemies down like his endless Melancholy is pushing him down.

While on one hand yes, it is important to mention melancholy was folded into the deadly sin of sloth, so a connection there would make sense between the authorities.
Another potential ability, in the case Hector is confirmed to have died 400 years ago in a future arc and someone else got the Melancholy Witch Factor, could be incorporeality. Because a depressed person would not want to be noticed or interact with others. Kind of like Obito's Kamui. Which, depending on limitations, someone could have Regulus level hax.

The fact that Beatrice said that Echidna's orders were absolute to her but then she was willing to go against Echidna's order to prevent Ryuzu from sacrificing herself truly shows that Beatrice did care about Ryuzu like a little sister

Echidna is such a perfect portrayal of a predator. For both rosewall and Subaru she offers them relief from their stressful gifts and seems bubbly and generous. She forces her fluids on young emotionally vulnerable men then gets them to depend on her. She s so charismatic that I and the OP are still attracted to her.

This must mean that Roswaal wants to take revenge. And also means that Dona lied about her death at first.

When Roswaal mentioned Satella and what he believes that happen to Emilia it was good to see the comparison between Satella and the Witch of Envy in Subaru’s flashbacks. I think that was the closest the anime went to show that Subaru sees Satella and the Witch of Envy are two completely people. The Witch of Envy that will kill all due to her jealousy while Satella wishes Subaru to kill her so that she can be freed of her fate.
That scene just hit me with Subaru burst of rage
