Brilliant video. There is nothing wrong with the music, it was quite good, but for atmospherics, just the aircraft sound was best. Maybe it had to do with concealing the radio chatter, in which case that is understandable.

Water injection is no longer used. Only the latest model of the B-52, the B-52H, is currently in use. That model uses newer, more powerful, engines that don't need the extra thrust that water injection provided the older models.

Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY was home to the 416th Bombardment Wing which flew the H models. They were the first SAC squadron to field TLAM cruise missiles. There was always four BUFFs fully loaded on alert. This video mentions CART startups vs APU. My understanding is that the alert BUFFs were on a 10 minute alert. It’s was awesome growing up in the Mohawk Valley and having BUFFs, KC135s, F106 (49th TFS) and A10s (The Boys From Syracuse, before a dike commander changed it to the People from Syracuse) flying around on short approach. Griffiss has a 12,000 foot runway and was an alternate landing site for space shuttles.

The statement at 4:50 is incorrect. The G-model was the last to use water injection. The H-model has never had water injection.
Also, at 6:27, "Tactical Air-to-Air Refueling" (TAAR) is not a term that's used, it's "Air-to-Air Refueling" (AAR).

    • @jeffwaldrop6005

Thank you Shawn, the J-57 engine in the g model was the last to use water injection. The TF-33 didnt use water and the black smoke on take off is because of the make up of the JP-8 fuel. I hate it when documentaries cant do the research to give the correct information. I actually worked on that very B-52 stationed at Minot during Desert Storm.

@@jeffwaldrop6005 The black smoke from the BUFF's engines is actually because it is a very old design and the older designs had inefficient burning. The black smoke is an incomplete fuel burn. Newer engines run hotter and with closer tolerances for more efficient fuel burn.
JP-8 fuel is very similar to civilian Jet-A fuel. JP-8 is equivalent to Jet-A1 fuel. The old JP-4 fuel was 50% kerosene and 50% gasoline. Very dangerous stuff.

Also the B-52 is about to be majorly overhauled. They took a B-52H fuselage (meaning no wings) & moved it from the boneyard to Boeing's plant in CA. It will be used to redo the entire cockpit as a glass cockpit with touch screens. The radar is being replaced with a modified F-18E/F radar along with part of the Growler Electronic Warfare systems. The engines are all being replaced with the military version of the current Rolls Royce commercial aircraft engine, which increases the range at least 30%, uses less fuel & provides significantly more thrust. The engines also will require no maintenance. The cheeks on the front are being removed & a new LINK 16, SATCOM, GPS, Starshield (the military version of Starlink) are being integrated on the spine. The cables & pulleys currently used to control the plane are being ripped out & completely replaced with a fiber optic fly-by-wire system with triple redundancy. When finished the 68 B-52H will be B-52I.

ERROR AT 13:45 The Globemaster has ~20,900 CUBIC feet of stores. It does NOT have 20,900 SQUARE feet.
Googling says the bay is 88 feet long by 18 feet wide. That corresponds to 1,584 SQUARE feet. It is 12.3 feet tall, which implies it's volume is 19,483 CUBIC feet, with perhaps another 1,400 cubic feet of irregular shaped space.

You commented that the reserve chute is carried on the back of the jumper, while the main chute is in front of the jumper. That is incorrect. The reserve chute is carried on the front of the jumper. That way, if it needs to be deployed, the jumper pulls the handle, and begins to quickly spill the reserve out its pack with his hands. The main chute is on the back, the jumper jumps with his/chin pointed down. This prevents the chute from snagging the helmet and tearing it, and possibly the head, off the jumper.

      From "The War Zone."
"The Air Force is still unsure of exactly when and how it will redesignate the remaining B-52s once they begin receiving various upgrades. The service believes that the addition of the AN/APG-79 radars will require major changes to existing operator and maintenance manuals, which could immediately prompt a need for a new designation, likely B-52J. However, bombers with new radars are expected to start returning to service before any of them get the engine upgrades, which may then similarly demand a second redesignation. If that happens, the final upgraded configuration could end up being referred to as B-52K."
