    The raid done in a single shot with that wu tang beat in the background is perfection

    "He said there's just soooo much good killin down there."
    Lol that's probably the darkest line I've ever heard. I forgot about that one.

    Not sure if you guys caught this, but one reason people go on about this episode is the whole raid, from coming up to the house to getting into Marty’s car and rolling out, is one continuous shot.

    This episode sets the bar for what crime shows/movies should aspire to. The tone, the action, the language, the stakes, the pace, all of it is so well done. Just the story and execution of this single episode, regardless of the rest of the season, is better than any other “street level” story that’s been put out recently.

  • @mclizzard2928
    @mclizzard2928 Před 6 měsíci +13

    Also, remember, Marty took a risk going into the bar, but that's the only way he would have known that Rust left the bar, since they took the boat. Marty managed to keep up with that entire string of shenanigans and landed right where they needed him. Rust was the star of the show, but they never would have made it out of the projects without Marty.

    I don't feel bad for Marty. If someone broke into my apartment and threatened me in the way he did, I'd be out for blood. Cheating is what is. Him and her are equally dirty on that, but he broke that contract when he tried to control who she was seeing. He felt he could dominate and throw his weight around. That said, showing up when the kids were there is wild.
    Cohle manipulating Marty by telling him that Maggie is ready for him to be back in the house is low key fucked up, but it's smart strategy. Cohle is all about the case. What else does he have?

    • @tidepride86
      @tidepride86 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Absolutely. Rust needed Marty in a halfway decent head space for the job

    Remember also the reason rust drinks beer in the present time with the cops is because it makes everything he says inadmissible. This show is excellent

    • @MrDMF567
      @MrDMF567 Před 6 měsíci +4

      The writer said this in a behind-the-scenes bit + when Cohle wants them to pick up beer he says kinda condescendingly “is this supposed to be admissible?” & these instances got latched onto & this line about “inadmissibility” is repeated all the time.
      It’s likely the entire video interview would be admissible.
      There’s no per se rule that says drinking or being drunk during questioning renders a statement inadmissible. (If that was the case, the number of DUI convictions would go waaay down)
      His statements would be inadmissible “only when the intoxication is of such a degree as to negate defendant’s comprehension and to render him unconscious of the consequences of what he is saying.” (State of LA v Rankin, 1978).
      He’s not demonstrating any signs of unreliability in his mental capacity. He’s been meticulously detailing events from over a decade ago, etc. Also he shows he understands what’s happening around him as he ends the interview, telling the detectives to get a warrant if they want to search his storage locker and then just leaves. Cohle knows what he’s said, knows that it doesn’t rise to the level necessary to allow them to get a warrant, and that there’s nothing they can do. (Marty says “You weren’t getting a read on him, he was getting a read on you”). All that is evidence enough that his statements were made ‘freely & voluntarily’ and that any intoxication did not render him incapable of making independent, informed statements.
      Going further, there is even Louisiana case law where a suspect’s confession was ruled admissible…even though the police brought him alcohol.
      A TV writer is not a lawyer. What he said and the line he had a fictional character say in his fictional TV show is not the law. I want to believe people aren’t basing their real life decisions on this. However, for as often as I see the ‘inadmissible’ line repeated all over (YT vids with 4M views/reddit/quora/etc)…I’m not holding out much hope.

    The bartender at the strip club is the writer for the show. He's the one who came up for the entire concept of true detective and put it into writing. Man's brilliant The backstory he creates that like even a lot of people don't know about like the mythology that surrounds a lot of the characters in the background as all based on like really old sci-fi from the early 1900s when sci-fi was extremely young. It's pretty interesting stuff.

    That was an interesting perspective about the hood getting the short end of the stick in that whole situation. But if it’s true that they were already planning to do that, Rust probably did soften the damage a little.

    A lot of people think this is the top episode, but I think it’s just a great fit for everything that follows. Part of the beauty is the thick tapestry of details that fit perfectly into an amazing whole. Nothing disappoints and nothing goes to waste.

      having fucked up their "escape plan", it could've also seemed to Ginger that Rust had his own exit if he intended to betray them. Shooting up the place and causing a bunch of gangs to come out for blood, maybe it was his best shot at survival

      don't forget, the insane amount of drugs they were all collectively on might have inhibited his critical thinking abilities. Also rust had him at gun point and literally the whole hood was on them at this point with cops not far behind, better the enemy you know than the enemy you don't.
