    Your pros toward the CR-V are valid, however, the CX-5's interior is more Audi, BMW or Volvo. And the CX-5 is just beautiful,.. something you cannot say about a CR-V or RAV4 or any other in this price range. Plus, the CX-5 has a real transmission, not those boring CVTs.

      @francismartinez6049 Před 6 lety +4

      John Fairbanks CX5 won't hold up as well as a Toyota though. They have weak automatic transmissions and their engines aren't that great either. I wouldn't consider compromising handling for reliability, especially in this class of vehicles.

      Forrest's Auto Reviews We bought a 2018 CX5 about 3 months ago and we love it. Lovely car to drive everyday. Very quiet, comfortable and handles really. Style wise it's a great looking car. Better looking that the Rav or crv imho. Cheers

      Normally I would agree with you on this point but I just went thru hell to get my $1000 deposit back on a low km 2017 demo CRV. Literally hours before completing the deal I got wind of what is shaping up to be a major issue with the Honda 1.5 L turbo. Google "Gas in Oil CRV" and then spend an hour or two reading about this issue on the Honda owner forums. Honda has no fix yet and lots of folks are affected. I believe Honda will get it corrected eventually but not until a lot of people have done serious damage to their motors. I"m looking seriously at the CX5 now and couldn't be happier that it is a common regularly aspirated mill.

    CX-5 is just perfect to me ... love that Mazda's emphasis on their driving experience-first philosophy seems like they'll implement CVT transmissions - or at least design it in a way you wouldn't notice the difference.

    • @whoanelly-
      @whoanelly- Před 6 lety +2

      Agreed. I could never go back to a car, and dont want a big gas guzzling SUV. I wish manufactures would drop CVTs, for the most part the public hates them, and really made my choices smaller as a result. Was between a RAV4 and CX5 for me, and just loved how the CX5 drove. Yeah I wish the trunk was a bit bigger, bummer is shrank from first gen, but Im also no hauling stuff everyday. But I drive everday, and love doing so in my CX5. And hands down in my opinion the best looking one. CRV is weird space aged bubble and the RAV4 front end just looks funny to me.

      I had my Mazda3 2 years ago, only took few minutes to get use to the info system- very easy to use, kind of suprise ppl say it's hard to use, not sure about 2018 model yet, but if its same as 2015 model, it should be easy to learn and use.

    • @crazypk
      @crazypk Před 6 lety +1

      Andrés González Madriz I agree. I have the 2018 cx5 and I’m puzzled at all the complaints that refer to the infotainment system as hard to use. I found it to be intuitive and quite easy to grasp. Are there better and more modern systems out there? Probably. But this one isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

    CRV might look ok on a spec sheet but it doesn’t drive anywhere near as well as the CX5; it’s not even close. Plus the style and quality of the CX5 is chalk and cheese next to the CRV. I wouldn’t even consider the CRV to be a competitor to the CX5

    • @tubedinoz

    When comparing the CR-V to the CX-5 one of the things that made me choose the Mazda was that it has a six speed automatic transmission vs Honda’s CVT. Also a proven naturally aspirated 2.5L engine vs Honda’s small 1.5L turbo. Also I like the BMW like console with the infotainment controls. I agree that Mazda has to include other improvements like auto car play. But the fit and finish of the interiors in the GT it’s more refined than the Honda’s. I went back and forth to Honda, Toyota (Rav4) and Mazda dealers and test drove them all more than once. All are great crossovers, but in the end I chose the CX-5. Very happy with the purchase so far.

    CX-5 is near perfect IMO. Only thing that needs improvement is the infotainment system; it should have a [slightly] larger screen, an improved traffic map, and Apple CarPlay

    • @franzwetrfres2116
      @franzwetrfres2116 Před 6 lety +1

      mizzou192003 and more cargo room. And a bit more utility (the cupholder situation, for example). I feel like sometimes Mazda, as of late, prioritizes design over function, which would work great for a sports car, but not a family SUV (I think that goes without saying). Either way, it's definitely a stunning looker and I'm sure handles like a pro!

    • @mingweili0x

      Just have a opposite opinion here. I drove Mazda3 before with same infotainment system and I think it has the best on the market. Really intuitive and handy to use. Navigation is really clear and easy to use as well, way better than the Lexus I'm driving right now.

    • @samm1462

    • @mizzou19
      @mizzou19 Před 6 lety

      Sam m it’s undersized compared to the majority cars on the market today (including its competition). I’m a big Mazda fan and I want to see them succeed...and there’s a better chance of that happening if they aren’t lacking in an area where most other manufacturers are delivering. Rather, that’s a great way to make you an outlier.
      P.S. that’s something my dad would say.

    • @samm1462
      @samm1462 Před 6 lety

      screen size is fine, some of those huge tablet screens are just silly. Rav-4 6.1", crv 7", mazda cx-5 7" Jeep Cherokee 7" Forrester 7", so Grand Cherokee has 8.1" Highlander 6.1" Mazda CX-5 rates a very close 2nd to CRV 8.9 to 9.0 for best crossover SUVs 2018 US news out of 44 vehicles. Basically just rebutted both your claims, What majority exactly? where else are they lacking? Best in class handling. So the trunk is a tad smaller than CRV, I think the mazda has better leg room all around and better the CRV in fuels efficiency and handling. You do realize US news rated the CX-5 2nd in its class they rated about 44 cross over SUVS. I am getting popcorn cannot wait to see you try to rebut this...should, be good. You basically just came and spouting your opinion which is fine, but you're making it sound like fact...

    I have a '19 CX-5, which has low-speed surging problems. It's extremely annoying in stop-and-go driving. It's a known issue, since Mazda has issued a TSB for the problem. It's funny how not one of the "official" reviews on CZcams mentions this, despite multiple complaint threads on the web.

    Good review Dave. I agree the cupholder comment. I wish the shifter console was smaller and to left, and the cupholders were to the right of the Shifter (kind of like ford explorer). (I'm sure many people use google maps on their phones and some keep phone in cup holder). CRV = CVT Transmission. Bottom Line: If you really want the 7 extra cubic feet, then Crv is the choice (keep in mind it has CVT transmission). If you want something that is more exhilarating to drive day in day out, a classier interior, and you're willing to let go of the 7 cubit feet, then Mazda Cx5 is the right choice. Fuel economy of the two is pretty close, and it can vary based on driving style anyway.

    Balance. This needs more Kodo in the rear like the CX4 sold in China. I hope the CX7 coming out after 2020 follows the Keoru concept at the show. Truly beautiful design I would buy with the turbo in a heartbeat.

    I have the 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring and I love it. Great all around car. The only thing that sucks is the navigation system, but that is to be expected with most cars without built-in data connectivity. I actually really like the infotainment besides that and the Bose audio is a must if you're looking to buy/lease one of these.

    • @HidingFromFate
      @HidingFromFate Před 6 lety

      Bose is nearly horrible. (Didn't want to be too negative, so added the "nearly" qualifier :-P). I've test driven about 8 to 10 cars in the last 6 weeks. The Bose systems were always the worst ones. Sony, Infinity, etc., all better audio in other vehicles. I"m not really surprised though. Bose has a poor reputation among those who prioritize audio. But their massive advertising expenditures (more than all other audio companies combined) has been huge in shaping the false perception among the average consumers who have been well-trained to presume Bose must be good.

    • @brettthemonster
      @brettthemonster Před 6 lety +2

      kikkiokioli I have a pretty critical ear and at least in the CX-5 the Bose system is very good. I actually had an Infinity system in my last car and it was pretty bad. Must depend on how the factory installs them in each vehicle.

    • @HidingFromFate
      @HidingFromFate Před 6 lety

      I would think the factory installs would be the same, would they not? Anyway, sincerely glad it's working well for you, to your satisfaction, etc.. Really wish I felt the same. If I wind up purchasing this car, I'll be upgrading the system. And I don't really consider myself that much of an "audiophile".

    • @brettthemonster
      @brettthemonster Před 6 lety

      kikkiokioli I probably didn't make this clear, but I was referring to different Bose systems in different cars. Every manufacturer would use different speaker configurations to fit their car. So, I can't really speak to other carsv testing Bose speakers, but in the CX-5 I have, they sound great. Just took some tweaking of the EQ. I'm not usually the biggest Bose fan either. Usually way overpriced.

    • @HidingFromFate
      @HidingFromFate Před 6 lety

      Brett, I just purchased the CX-5 this week and funny thing was, the Bose system was better than I had remembered from my previous test drive with the vehicle. I thought I had adjusted everything to neutral for that test drive (as I had done for all of my vehicle test drives). But maybe not. Who knows, could have been several things; my mood, the music playing at the time, the source, etc., that contributed to that original negative impression. But now I think this particular Bose system is pretty respectable. Maybe a bit too "bloated" or rings a little too much in the bass sometimes but I haven't thoroughly tweaked the settings yet. Where do you have your settings positioned; bass, treble, fader, etc?

But I would like something I could sleep in the back of if I wanted to, and I drove a Hyundai Santa Fe rental on my last trip and I really like it so I'm looking at these. Honestly I'm not a big fan of the way this Mazda looks. I love the car though. If I go for an SUV, at least for looks, I might have to go with something else. But being a tall person, it was refreshing being able to just step into a car instead of having to get low to the ground.

    I rented this car for a week while in Florida. I thought the seats were a bit firm, can you comment on your thoughts on seat comfort?

    • @HidingFromFate
      @HidingFromFate Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, it's weird that I've seen a couple magazine reviews stating that the seats are comfortable. They're not close to the Ford Edge or Volvo XC-5, for example (other cars that I"ve sat & drove in recently). That said, I did find the CX-5 driver seat interesting in that, while the seat wasn't too comfortable it didn't seem to get any worse 20-30 minutes into the drive. Just kind of stayed the same. So, not horrible, but definitely not one of the higher points in favor of the vehicle. If I were to purchase this car, I'd probably start looking for aftermarket cushions to improve upon that aspect.

    The styling of the CR-V is off the charts in terms of ugliness. That of course is personal taste. For 35 grand I just don't want to look at something that makes me wanna puke every time I look at it.

  • @aussie.gaijin
    @aussie.gaijin Před 6 lety +3

    All good things aside, the brakes on the AWD are weak. Doesn't stop as well as the FWD. Mazda probably did not tweak the braking power of the rear brakes for AWD models. The dashboard is made of a sticky type material, dust just collects and sticks to it - the sticky material makes it a pain to clean.
    The 2.5 ltr requires more pedal to the metal to go uphill. Would have been perfect with the turbo engine from the CX-9 - and if they swapped the 6-speed for a 8-speed for better efficiency and use of the power/torque band.

      CarPlay adds nav from your phone without paying extra for dated onboard maps from the car manufacturer. You can use waze, google maps, the native iOS map or others also, take your pick. You can use your favorite music streaming service without dealing with XM's terrible service and sales model. The 2019 has CarPlay and AA now and the 2018s are being retrofitted on most lots if they are still there. CarPlay is light years beyond the native services and saves you money.
