My husband and I went to South Africa for a month in December mid-eighties. We landed there Christmas day with no visas (from Canada) - we didn't know we needed them. Visas were required because of the sanctions enacted by the international community because of apartheid. The authorities finally decided we were no threat and let us in. I was heartbroken and smitten by what I saw and went back in 1989 to volunteer and to do my bit against apartheid. Ended up on a wine farm which didn't seem to fit the bill at first but the owners of the farm decided to hire knapsackers and people like me to augment the farm pool. It was a resounding success - whites and blacks working together. The press came from 8 countries to do stories about us. I felt so proud to do my part. At the end of the day, we are all in this together on this earth, human beings. Nelson, you were one of our shining stars!

Charlene, it pulled at my heartstrings too. I wish we had a man like him leading us today. I was born in 1990 and pretty much grew up with Madiba's presence. Something broke when he passed.
When he died, some expected carnage and war. Instead - this is what we experienced all over. As I listened to the radio while working, I wasn't very productive on that rainy day. Gestures and songs like this had me in tears.
My God...this pulled at my heart in various ways...there was a reverence that emanated from their voices...I felt the depth of the struggle, the pain became as real as the tears that would fall from my eyes...this was more than a tribute...this was a great blessing...indeed...

I was lucky enough to live and work in South Africa for 3 years - an absolutely stunning country and truly wonderful people. I was there when Madiba died and the impact on everyone was immense - everyone, regardless of colour or creed, was united in grief. His lack of rancour after his many years in prison on Robben Island was truly humbling. A giant among men, and a man who truly brought his people together. Just a note on Woolworths - nothing like the shoddy stores in the UK and the US - Woolies in South Africa is a top class chain of stores and equal to Marks & Spencer in the UK in my view. Brilliant range of food in the grocery section, excellent wines, and top quality clothing in the larger stores. If you can find it, watch Endgame with William Hurt and Chiwetel Ejiofor - an excellent film which I have watched more times than I can count.

I remember where I was when I first heard of his passing. I was working the night shift. At the time, I worked in an isolated area where I was the only operator. Thank God, because I had the privacy to cry and grieve for him without others staring. I said a prayer thanking God for him. He was heaven sent to save our country from bloodshed and war
