I forgot to mention the discovery of the experimental plane and its first flight. Loved that.

    Ok. Here I go(cracks knuckles....lol).
I was able to see the movie with original audio on Netflix. I can't imagine watching/hearing this stuff dubbed. It think it robs the piece of media from its original intent.
The movie works for me on a couple of levels. For one, I was interested in watching a Japanese movie about their take on post-WWII. Granted, it's scifi but I still thought they did a good job talking about how to reconstruct their society, how are their war vets regarded in their society, etc... In other words for me, the movie would have worked equally as well without Godzilla as drama.
Second, and following from the above, I was interested in the characters. I thought it was fascinating to see how a failed kamikaze regarded himself and how he tried to reintegrate into a society that saw him as a failure. I liked the motivations of the female character in helping the abandoned child and how they became a defacto surrogate family for one another struggling to make it.
Third, the movie at some level felt like the original Jaws. Yes, the shark was hokey but the movie is carried by the themes, characters, plot, and action. The shark was simply the mechanism to get the movie going.
One of the conversations about the movie is how they were able to make it on a budget while plenty of Hollywood movies with 10x the budget look cheaper. It's a lesson for Hollywood.
I agree on the Godzilla look. That's one thing that the American movies have made better because they're not stuck in representing the classic look(man in suit). Luckily, Godzilla is not the main focus of the movie...despite the title.
Consider also this movie is coming after the cheesy Hollywood Godzilla v Kong franchise that takes the worst of those traditional Godzilla movies and amplifies it. It was nice to see a more serious simple take on the subject.

I agree, this is one reason why I don’t like watching movies overdubbed. It definitely takes away from the drama element (maybe one of the main reasons it didn’t hit for me personally). I couldn’t imagine eating Shogun overdubbed! Anyway, I commend them for trying something different but again, I don’t think I’ve seen enough of the Japanese films to really make a good comparison. I thought the 2013 Godzilla had some good balance of drama, characters and action.- Kiren
