      @@WorldTowning Wool socks are the best for wet shoes. Once waterproof shoes get wet inside, they are near impossible to dry. Trail runners will dry out far faster. If you really need to be waterproof, just put on bread bags over socks, inside of shoes - or waterproof socks.

      Waterproof isn't a thing that is actually possible, so just good shoes are better. Just change your socks more. Embrace it.

  • @lisekapp268

    Pro tip from someone who outfits through hikers: you are going to go through several pairs of shoes on this journey. Whether it’s hoka or altra, the EVA foam cushion midsole is only designed to last approximately 150 - 200 miles before it compacts. Once it compacts, the shoe can cause foot/knee pain, worst case scenario, injury, like plantar fasciitis or
. other things I won’t bring up.
    Waterproof isn’t necessary, especially if you are wearing wool socks. Good luck!

    • @WorldTowning
      @WorldTowning  Pƙed 12 dny +1

      Thanks for the tip. So replace the cushion midsole half way through the life of the shoes? And thanks for watching.

    • @lisekapp268
      @lisekapp268 Pƙed 12 dny

      @@WorldTowning not exactly; the ‘midsole’ is the cushion part of the shoe. The ‘insole’ is the insert inside of your shoe that is replaceable, but that’s not going to help by replacing. Using a custom orthotic or an after market insole like Superfeet can add a few extra miles to your shoes, but ultimately the shoes will need to be replaced for your well being. There are plenty of shops along the way that will set you up and explain this type of shoe wear. đŸ‘‹đŸ»

    I don't know if they make that much of a difference in the rain, but I love my gaiters with my Altras. Also, I noticed that my feet stayed much dryer in the rain on the AT once I started using an umbrella with a hands-free holster for it. I don't think I'll ever go back to just a rain jacket.

    I also recommend the Packa, which is a waterproof jacket and pack cover in one - that way the backpack doesn't get wet, and you are in a waterproof bubble. It hangs longer than a typical jacket too. In summer, its way more breathable too. We've had ours for 10 years now, and adore it. Its super fast to put on as well. You had a way out? i have memories of nasty weather... no rescue van,,, we had to either hike out to destination or hunker down, hot fire (in tent) dry out and dry out clothes. i used Merryll hiking boots (water resistant. No boot is water proof 100%. ) Layering. Wearing a pair of cotton socks then a nyln sock over that and then a heavy wool sock is the best combination. Wearing nylon by itself will eventually cut into your feet. Wool against your foot is often uncomfortable but makes a great padding for your feet. We never had (hand warmer packs) however, they do work and a good invention. Wear a band over your forehead. A good idea is to carry a couple of steel wool pads in a sandwich bag and in a separate bag and wrapped in tissues, a 9V battery. Instant fire starter. Laces..... always carry 2 extra sets of boot laces. There are walking / hiking shoes but for your situation you definitely need good hiking boots. My last pair were purchased some 17 years ago and are still in good condition. Make sure to rub boot oil over a slightly wet boot at least once a week (in your case) and bring replacement inner cushioned souls. That's all i have for now. Ttfn

      It was beautiful until it got too cold. I loved it initially. We have lived 10 years of full-time travel with learning the safety measures of adventures and a little extra and then going for it. If we wait until we are fully ready, most never go. We will share all the details as the vlogs and days roll on, but Captain only has a modified school schedule for the first 5 weeks and then he is done for summer so not too much. Yes, the goal is Katahdin not just 3 months. Thanks for your support.

    My first day of our 4 days there was a torrential downpour! My back hurt, I hadn’t prepared! One sister went ahead because we thought we needed to check in at our cabins before they closed the store/office. The other sister and I were trying to walk up a hill! The water came halfway up to our knees!!! I wanted to give up and sit in a log and drown! My sister kept making me take one step at a time up the hill against the “river”! We made it! Then downhill
. Then there was a turn off! I wanted to take the turn off, I was sure it was the cabins. My sister thought it was further! Luckily I talked her into it as we started down that hill the other sister came running happy go lucky all excited, keys in hand!!!
    The hot showers were the best! I threw out all kinds of stuff and gave away stuff to the sisters and they carried stuff for me the next 3 days!
    It never rained again!!

    Y'all do know that fog-soaked rainy days have superpowers, don't you? Try Hooting like an Owl early one morning at the break of the day, or in camp just before you slip into your tent to sleep the night away. Spooky though! The close-ups of tree buds, and weird-shaped tree limbs and leaves mixed with a casual 360% are excellent choices as you walk & chat. The telling of the day's adventures with some campfire light flickering on your face would work well. Last but not least, please explain the tree-limb punched hole in Largo's right cheek, the cheek next to his nose, or did he cut it shaving unnecessarily, LOL.

    I honestly can’t believe what kind of shoes people wear. Get some leather boots and seal them with boot sealer . Even if you buy gore-Tex or some similar brand, you still need to seal the outside of the boots . The fabric will get soaked. I wore leather Vasque without Gore -Tex for years backpacking. You just seal them well and reapply when the water stops beading up on the outside of your shoes.

    Okay, between hiking in rain, while super cold, or super tired, I would choose super cold. I walk a lot faster if I am cold, because movement warms you. Rain is fine if the weather is warm, and the wind isn’t blowing, but I am screwed if I am not wearing a hat, since I wear glasses. In the summer time, I don’t mind the rain as long as I can walk on pavement. But I wouldn’t hike, that woodsy trail that I love to hike, in the rain, because I don’t like walking in mud. Not that I didn’t just step right in some thick, gloppy mud, two days ago, when I took my toddler hiking on that trail

    You can walk all day in them and your feet stay dry .. they are BEST for snow and ice, but I use them in rain as well
    if my feet get soaked too long the skin gets soft and raisoned .. these keep them from happening
    now you have to keep water from going in from the top of the sock, but it seems you are wearing rain pants

    Last year we had so much rain. It was really hard. Lots of sucky days.
    My Altras I started out with didn’t have enough padding, so I switched to Speedgoats for the cushion. I started out with waterproof Speedgoat mids. They stayed waterproof for 2 or 3 hundred miles, then they lost their waterproof qualities. Water still went in the top though in hard rain. So I didn’t bother with waterproof Speedgoats when I replaced them.
    I constantly walked through deep mud and puddles that went over the top of the shoes so they were just wet.
    Deeper running water at least gets some of the mud out of your shoes and socks though.
    Oh rinse out your muddy socks in the sink 20 to 30 times before washing them with your other clothes. It is the only way to get out all the mud. If you don’t, they will get sour and smell
my socks and shoes reeked until I figured that out. I also washed out my shoes really good with a hose every chance I got. They were wet anyway so at least the were clean and wet.
