I remember watching this race live in 1998. That was the greatest overtaking move I have ever seen. Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher were a great team.
Still remember this race like it was yesterday, driving to the limit during 20 qualifying laps, unbelievable Michael, your are one the greatest.KEEP FIGHTING.
McLaren made a mistake and fueled to the end of the race, they were tricked into it so Schumacher had 20 laps less fuel, its not anything special to be able to build that gap around Hungary, its corner after corner after corner so the weight penalty and tyre deg is even more damon hill didn't suddenly feel like putting in qualifying laps or Schumacher didn't suddenly forget how to race in 1997, the Ferrari and other Goodyear guys were handicapped with tyres and it allowed hill to look like he was superman
@@MrRodzilla It was indeed special. The difference in fuel loads meant Michael should've had a 1.1s advantage. On the time sheets he was running 1.8s a lap faster than Coulthard. Michael was finding .7s extra per lap. In a 10-lap period from lap 52 - 61 he found 16 seconds and that included running off the track and losing 5s to Coulthard. So adjusted he made 21s on Coulthard over 10 laps. Fuel load alone isn't going to make you 2s a lap faster, not that late in the race. Brawn's strategy accounted for the fuel advantage but still required more from Michael. Michael delivered.
@@thestaggy the rest of the advantage is tyres, coulthard must go to the end of the race and schumacher doesnt tyres mean a great deal around that track for example damon hill didnt become superman all of a sudden in 1997 and produce 40 qualifying laps
Schumacher proved time and time again that it's not just he car that wins races. In today's racing I see great talent and great cars but Merc is dominant at the moment. Vettel has the talent but not the Schumi maturity, at least not yet.
Not trying to take away anything from Hamilton but Schumacher had to be the best driver in the race any day for almost his entire career. And he was. Hamilton usually only really had to beat his teammte...

This was one of his best drives in 1998... but for me his best drive that year was a race he retired from ironically. Suzuka... he started last after stalling on the grid whilst on pole.. climbed up to 5th before a right rear puncher. Championship lost at that point but what an effort.
Easily one of his greatest drives by having a solid 20 laps on qualifying trim and also risky but smart tactical switch from Ferrari to gave Schumi the win. Nowadays Ferrari either plays it safe or absolutely risked it without thinking of the consequences
really missing formula one at that time, pit stop strategies will decide the race result. no drs, if drivers want to overtake, they have to use their skills to do that.... formula 1 now like a bullshit, who got faster car then you will win the race....
