  • my first time ever ceramic coating! i learned so much in this video. this took so long because i constantly kept messing up and it would be so visible in the pure black paint. i wanted the results to come out near perfect and finally i got close enough!

Some tips for anyone wanted to do a coating themselves.
    1. Always do a polish beforehand, even if it’s a brand new vehicle.
    2. A 10:1 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water will act as a prep solution to remove any residue from the polish that may be leftover.
    3. Put your ceramic microfibers in a bucket filled with water and dish soap immediately after use to prolong the life of them. (Ceramic will crystallize on the towel if you do not do this, causing scratches)
    4. Most coatings are ready to wipe off after they flash over, it’ll look almost like an oil slick.
    5. For high spots (extra ceramic that hasn’t leveled, will still look flashed) lightly mist a microfiber with distilled water and wipe the panel. It should take the extra ceramic off if done before it has cured. If it has cured you need to rub off with polishing compound and reapply the coating.
    6. Look at your work outside when finished to get the best opportunity to catch high spots that are leftover.
    7. If you have ceramic left over, put it in the refrigerator. It’ll increase the lifespan of the coating until it’s next use.

Dude your production value has gotten insane over the time I've been watching your channel! I've got a M52 swapped early model getting built now and this vid has inspired me to go crazy and detail the car myself once it's running. Thank you for all the cool videos Joel!

Whenever I have a bad day I watch your videos. The amount of fuck ups is just comical. I respect you so much for willing to put in the work, especially on things you have 0 experience with. 2 steps forward, 1 step back, but you will make it. You inspire me with your channel and I'm starting my own in a few weeks. Right now I have a test video of me painting my replica E30 M3. I am going to build it from scratch, from doing bodywork, to painting the complete car inside and out, building a roll cage and building a 500hp engine. Whenever im a bit further down the road with some more footage shot and edited, I'm launching the channel. Anyway, thanks again for this video. Keep it up!!

For the next correction you do, you can use compressed air to blow the compound/polish out of the pads/rags. It'll save a lot more down time.
With polish typically you can move a little quicker since there aren't as many abrasives so it takes less time to break down.
Also whenever you do wash pads/microfiber just use detergent never add softener (it messes with the absorbency) and when you dry do the lowest temp you. It'll extend the longevity of the pads/microfiber.
Still the car came out looking fresh!

    @texaspowerman Před rokem +3

You normally do the touchup before polishing. You dab the spots, wet sand it flat then start your polishing. The cutting removes the scratches. When you go to polish the polish will have fillers that hid the little scratches. So do one spot until you figure out how your going to do the whole car. The iso with a clean towel will not scratch, if it shows scratches you need to polish more. Pad speed is important, 6-8 passes per 2x2 area. If there are still scratch’s you live with it or polish more.
When the csl goes on to heavy and streaks just add some more quickly and wipe it off. Once it drys you have to sand it off and start again.
You should clear coat the polished lenses.
You did great it will be easier next time. You would normally follow crystal serum lite with gtechniq EXO. It’s a super hydrophobic coating that helps prevent water spots. And makes water just bead up and roll off. Use the trim product on the plastic pieces and the G5 for your glass and plastic, like the tail lights. For regular washes use a SIO topper like 3D Bead It Up or the new P&S Defender rather than the spray wax. Spray wax doesn’t stick to the ceramic and will just come off in a couple of days.
Refresh the coating with the gtechniq C2v3 spray. It will keep the ceramic going for 3-4 years. The car is three ft gorgeous now.
If you want 3 inch gorgeous you need to repaint. 😁 Use the extra on your wheels. Throw the towels away. You can’t wash the ceramic out it will scratch everything. I toss them or put them in the tire/wheel well wash bucket. Long video gets a long post.

Joel, after watching, wanted understand the “time” commitment, but it’s in the title of 150+ hours or if done as a “job” from a reference standpoint, would be 4 weeks, or 1 month of an 8 hr a-day job. Insane commitment, My Man. You’re a testament of the adage, “to fry an egg, you’ve got to break a few!”, and then laugh at one’s self. Keep it up!

Another trick if you ever go down this road again. Hahaha. we used to do compounding boats and yachts to clean pads while using them, can spin it and use end of a wooden ruler or paint brush. No harm to the pad and cleaned great..... When detailing a clean pad is less work and much better results. Car looks completely different start to finish. Great job 🤙

Instead of using griots 3 in 1 ceramic wax in between washes, I would suggest using their ceramic speed shine. It’ll act as a rejuvenating agent without adding a layer of wax over the already existing coating. Also coatings can still get water spots if left for too long so keep microfiber towels on hand.

I have never seen a car get stripped before to get polished and coated. You really should do a decontamination with the iron remover and then the claybar or mitt before polishing.
You can get I dual dei-oniser for your car washes. Many come with cartridge exchange programs. You plumb it in with a bypass setup so you only use the clear water when you want it spot free.
Instead of waiting for things to air dry use a leaf blower. Now that is coated you could wash it with the spotfree system and then dry the car with a leaf blower, the electric EGO’s work great for this, they sell a stubby tube with a rubber band around the nozzle so you don’t scratch anything.
    No towels needed.
Try rhino liner in the wheel wells, it blacks them out and it’s really tough and will seal the metal.

Dude I’ve found that on my black car that a lot of times I can just polish then wax, instead of starting with compound. If I’m gonna wet sand with the 3000 (my hood gets fcuked every summer with Florida rain and sun) then I compound, polish and wax. Another tip is do the touch up paint before you compound cause you may need a small wet sand first. And you will always see the grainy scratches and minor swirls with older paint, you are only gonna get it so good, the final wax is meant to fill it in, that’s why guys build up wax layers (it looks like the ceramic coat did the same thing). Great job bro. That feeling you get when you see your reflection after all the work! 😎

Let’s go bro, car looks so good
All the hurdles and trials and errors are some of the same things I went through on my techno violet E36 M3. (Before i hydroplaned it couple months back going 50 trying to be safe in rain on highway but pooled up area on bridge smoked me bad) Ik Ik big sad my baby everything to me 130k techno coupe on bags, mad good paint too, ended up finding it up by you in CT. Still looking for another now or a boston green but getting harder it seems. Awesome results on the black paint. Also finally someone I could relate to with everything I went through in correcting a car for the first time and every step or night I expected to get done ended up doubling with how ode I started to look at all the little scratches in the post polish prep with lights turned off in the shop and spotlight. But awesome to see another BMW enthusiast learning from their own mistakes (it’s the only way I learned) respects to you for that
30 looks nasty and your attention to detail throughout the whole journey just shined through even more when you had to compound and polish all over. Again had exact scenarios with chasing all the dry blown off compound with air compressor and surface prep/ microfibers I was constantly flipping
Comments getting too long at this point but ik that not even close to as long and many nerves went into seeing this project through. Cool to see others getting after it I guess the whole world really doesn’t stop even tho I don’t got a BMW rn
Hope to go out for a rip with you at some point down the road
    Again awesome results looks nuts!
    Shouts from east end LI
