How Dutch Men Were Recruited For the Waffen-ϟϟ in the Netherlands during World War II

  • Around 25,000 Dutch volunteers fought for Germany during World War II on the Eastern Front. How were Dutch volunteers recruited for the Waffen-SS? What was the role of the Dutch collaborating party - the NSB - in all this? What was the role of Anton Mussert, Meinoud Rost van Toningen and Hendrik Seyffardt in the Netherlands during WW2? Dutch volunteers for axis service were put in these three formations: Standarte Westland (Wiking Division), Dutch Volunteer Legion (Vrijwilligerslegion Nederland) and the Landstorm.

      You watch the story and read the book about the Corrie tin Boom Family. Or the couple who lived near a nature reserve . Both working hard to save Jews and other "undesirable citizens" from the Germans.
      Then here are Dutch, fighting their own citizens. Doesn't make sense.

    Many people always forget to count the overall amount of Dutch volunteers in the German armed forces. A few Dutchmen, who were living on the borderland near Germany - most of them had German ancestors or sought their livelihood in the German employment -, were able to join the German Heer, as soldiers or Wehrmacht auxiliaries, like many Latvians, Estonians, Ostvölker etc. Others joined the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine as auxiliaries. It is estimated that around 10.000 Dutchmen had joined the NSKK, the Nationalsozialistische Kraftfahrkorps. An underexposed subject.

      Two of the four Dutch pilots already died during the war. Maybe there were some more Dutch Luftwaffe volunteers who just served as auxiliaries. I already knew there were also some Spanish, French and Croatian pilots who turned over to the German side. Even as the foreign volunteers in the Luftwaffen-Legion Lettland and Luftwaffen-Legion Estland.

    A very clear exposition of the subject. I look forward to the next instalment.
    25,000 men was enough to form a full division and have a reserve manpower pool to keep it up to strength for a couple of years on the Eastern Front. The fact that two Dutch "divisions" and a regiment were fielded by the W-SS is a measure of the inflated W-SS order of battle.
    That said, no other Western European population volunteered in sufficient numbers to bring a division to full strength. The others, at best, could have sustained a brigade for any length of time.

      If you add up the Flemish and Walloons from Belgium, they would be the size of a division. Also, while not part of the SS (well, some later became part of the SS), the Blue Division (Spanish volunteers) were certainly division-sized.

    • @markaxworthy2281
      @markaxworthy2281 Před 3 lety

      @@rodafowa1279 What you say is true, but doesn't conflict with what I said - "no other population group".
      The Wallons and Flemings are different population groups and, as you say, the Spanish Blue Division was not part of the Waffen-SS.

    • @rodafowa1279
      @rodafowa1279 Před 3 lety

      @@markaxworthy2281 Last time I checked, Flemings and Walloons were part of the same country and therefore, should be counted together. As for the Spanish not being part of the SS, what does it matter? If they volunteered in 1943 instead of 1941, they would've been part of the SS.

    • @markaxworthy2281
      @markaxworthy2281 Před 3 lety +1

      @@rodafowa1279 The Walloons and Flemish are quite distinct from each other, even though they are currently in the same country. Nor did the Waffen-SS regard them as the same.
      The Spanish had the opportunity to volunteer for the Waffen-SS in 1943, but only a battalion-worth did so.
      The Dutch were by some way the largest national group in Western Europe to volunteer for the Waffen-SS, in numbers just sufficient to sustain a division at the front for a couple of years.
      Indeed, outside the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark, the Waffen-SS lagged behind the Germany Army in raising a Spanish Division and "legions" from other non-"Germanic" peoples like the French. Only in 1943, when the Nazis belatedly decided to declare a "Pan-European Crusade" again Bolshevism, were the other Western Europeans transferred to the W-SS.
      The subject here is the W-SS, so there is no "should" about the Spanish being included here. However, I am more than happy to discuss them.

    Great video, but you missed an important factor that was brought up in this interview. czcams.com/video/BemxLdS5szc/video.html "Wim" the Dutch SS Veteran mentions the religious component. As you know it is the south of the Netherlands, Flanders, and the Eastern regions all the way to the North Sea that are heavily Catholic in the Netherlands. "Wim" grew up in the Twente and was Catholic and thus the recruiters calling it a crusade against the atheistic bolsheviks made it even more attractive. You know the defense plans of the Netherlands. The Twente was outside of even the first line of resistance, so "Wim" says they felt very much written off by their own government. I would love to know what you think about it.

      Hi Michael, thanks for sharing this. It is understandable some joined because of religion but the research I studied didn't mention this. I wonder why. What I can think of is the following: in the Netherlands fascism wasn't intertwined with religion (unlike Belgium for example). This was due to the 'verzuiling' (Pillarization) the Dutch church rejected fascism/nazism. Yet, it could very well be that recruiters used the argument you give to get more volunteers.

    While the video is informative, it does little to explain HOW Dutch men were recruited into the Waffen SS. I had an uncle, now long dead, a very gentle and meek man who had been a baker's apprentice in 1940. He was lured to volunteer by the promise of a Volkswagen. I kid you not. He was told by the recruiters that, once the war was over, all volunteers would be first in line for jobs and receive a Volkswagen for free! My uncle served on the Leningrad front as a machine gunner and survived the war with shrapnel embedded in his back, but he never got a volkswagen, or any car, for that matter. When he fell ill, later in life, he refused any X-rays, for fear the shrapnel in his spine would show up and lead to unwelcome questions. He subsequently died of untreated lung cancer. His children never knew of his past.

    Well, I still cannot figure out if you were playing the devil's advocate, when you said that the average Dutch Waffen SS member joined it in order to travel and explore the world. The globetrotter was part of an entourage that wrought havoc, destroyed cities, towns & villages, murdered populations in cold blood, sought to enslave people, especially in the Soviet Union, just as the other colonialists did across Africa, Asia and the Americas. In fact, Hitler's stated goal of his invasion of the Soviet Union was to enslave its people, and murder those who wouldn't submit, his ideal was the British colonisation of South Asia. And he got these Dutch and other volunteers, who decided to take the joyride with his invading forces. And the Germans, or the English for that matter, did not hate just the Bolsheviks, but they hated the Russia, early on, when he was the Orthodox Christian, toiling under the Tsars, themselves part and parcel from the West European royalty. There is something of a racial hatred the West European feels for the Asiatic Russian.

    In my opinion your vids involving Dutch SS volunteers are (somewhat?) politically “colored”.
    Almost all the facts you mentioned are correct, however there is a odor of sympathy, understanding and silent approval for these volunteers.
    Simply stating that boredom, lust for adventure, career opertunity and anti communism (come on, in rural Holland politics played no role) where the main factors to enlist is too short. The real question is “what sort of man” did volunteer.
    Enlisting in the German army, especially the SS was WRONG!. Period!
    Germany started a war against the Netherlands, thousands have died. Only the bombing of Rotterdam cost almost 900 innocent lives. Several hundreds of resistance man and woman, tortured and killed. Hundreds of civilians shot as reprisal. The 110000+ Jewish Dutch who never returned. Tens of thousend died of starvation.
    DECENT MAN DID NOT JOIN.
    Mind you, I do understand the feeling of those poor peasants in for example the province of Drenthe. Neglected by their own government, children walking barefoot, families of 15+, high infant death toll...and there is Germany with its funny Adolf. Work, food, modern, Booming economy, progressive....within 10 years from poverty to a nation where workers could enjoy a vacation. I can understand that out of envy the NSB was very popular.
    Still, It is a shame that so many viewers of your Chanel (see reactions) seem to glorify these SS volunteers. You provoke/enable this without comment.The picture you display at 11:00 is an example of that. Got nothing to do with historical facts.
