Newport, Oregon - the Dungeness Crab Capital of the world! And much, much more! Bring your surfboard, bicycle, hiking boots, and binoculars.
Newport is an historic city that caters to residents and visitors of all ages and interests. It is a city comprised of distinct neighborhoods including Agate Beach where you can visit the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, surf, or go clamming; Nye Beach where you can walk the beach and visit an incredibly eclectic array of shops, restaurants, and lodging establishments; the Deco District which is Newport's downtown and contains art deco buildings; the historic Bayfront which is a working fishing port and home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and lodging establishments, and located downhill from Newport's other lighthouse, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse; and South Beach which is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and boat launch and fishing opportunities. Because of these attributes, Newport is often described as the most authentic city on the entire Oregon Coast.
Whatever your interest, a warm coastal welcome awaits you in historic Newport.
    www.newportoregon.gov/dept/ad...
Newport is a funky place. Maybe it's the colorful sea life, maybe it's the creepy museums, but the town seems to have a unique kind of character - a great collision of odd attractions, natural beauty and classic qualities of the gritty Oregon coast.
It's a place, for example, where you can tour an eerie wax museum, walk out into the fish-scented air to watch sea lions fight for space on the docks, then have dinner and watch local artists perform at a quirky restaurant stuffed to the gills with modern art. There are several strange roadside attractions, a few incredible restaurants, two old lighthouses, one of Oregon's most popular craft breweries, and a hotel where you can book a Harry Potter-themed room.
There's so much going on in Newport that it's stellar natural beauty - often the main attraction in coastal towns - tends to play second fiddle. You should, by all means, visit beautiful Yaquina Head, but you may find your time occupied at Ripleys Believe It or Not! The local Chamber of Commerce advertises the town as "the coast you remember" and while that's a pretty bold declaration, it's practically impossible to visit without taking away a lasting memory.

Never tell people to " stay safe" it is more
      appropriate to say,
" remain obedient" ..And I am not talking about mask mandates or social distancing here..
Especially on the Oregon Coast, the ocean itself, the beach, jetties, tidepools, and rocks have exactly one thousand, seven hundred , and two ways to kill ya' .. And yes, I have counted. So when you see all those warning signs posted..they are not suggestions. Never turn your back on the ocean. Sneaker waves are not. a joke. But for all her danger..she is only all the more alluring.

All anyone has to do is call in your order in first at South Beach Fish market while you are in the parking lot ask for it to go they will call your name out in five minutes you will walk past the whole crowd of possibly 10 to 30 people .now watch how many people glare at you while you walk past them .Lived in Newport since 1981,mostly in south Beach .and that's the secret to great service

When I was in seventh grade, my father worked on the dipper dredge that built the jetty’s in the bay at Newport. It was the best Summer of my life when my mom and I came and stayed in our travel trailer as we lived about 60 miles away when dad had a job there. The money was too good for him to pass it up. I am now 67 years old and when my husband and I go to Newport, not much has changed. It looks just like it did in 1967. Nye Beach and the waterfront area is where my new friend and I would ride all over the town on his mini bike. When times were great! No helmets and not hassled by anyone for riding around on the streets. Hitting up the candy store in Nye Beach and just having fun being kids. I still have some fossil clams and huge agates that my dad dug up on the dredge. He warned me to never walk on the jetty’s no matter if the water looks still or not. People have been swept off of those from the sneaker waves and washed out to sea.

Last time I was in Newport was back in 2014, and I really need to get back there. Walked over the bridge many times with no fear of cars. Walked from Nye Beach to the North Jetty, long walk but worth it. I could almost live there, if I had the money. I really miss the ocean, living so far from it in Wyoming. Nice video but too short. P.S. Ever time I've gone to that Light House its been foggy. But I will go back, next time I'm at there. P.P.S. My Grandmother, Cora Wetter, belonged to the Art Guild at Nye Beach, and even though she is gone, some of her works are still hanging there.

A long comment from an ex- local:
I watched all your ads because I want you to make money off of this video. .. if possible. I saw that this is more recently made than other Newport Oregon videos I have seen. I could tell it was pretty recently made because you had a mask on in front of the Ripley' s Believe it or Not Museum in the Bayfront.
    About food in Newport:
I used to love the clam chowder at Canyon Way Restaurant..But after the shutdowns, they went under. However, the chowder at Nana's Irish Pub in Newport in the Nye Beach District is just as good. I like to say that they put a little chowder in amongst the clams. Now about that famous Mo' s chowder, I am sorry to say.. Mo' s USED to be good..... Back in the 1990' s..Now it is just mostly potatoes.
About the sand dunes on the beach:
The beach in Newport is a different beach every day, especially if you live there for a year and observe it. In the winter the changes from day to day in the sand shifting,, not to mention the piles of driftwood that can make tangled drift wood cities on the shoreline after a storm. They are often up to two stories tall.. it can be mind boggling.
Best time to come for good weather:
Real local tip. The best temperatures. ( in the 70' s every day ( is usually ALWAYS to be found in Mid to lateOctober and at times early November.).
    Most scenic route:
The best way to see the coast is start in Depot Bay and travel UP the coast to Yahacts..or start in Astoria and go down. Once you hit Florence the scenic ocean views are pretty much over but the fun to be had in Florence is all about the Dunes..
    Overall:
Newport is the best all around for scenery, entertainment, food.... Lighthouses..and ..yes..it IS The Friendliest town on the coast.
    I have lived in:
    Eugenre ( 1.5 years)
    Newport ( 2.5 years)
    Corvallis/ Albany (1.5. years)
And now I am in Bend. ( since December 2020)
Of all the places..I must admit, I loved Newport the MOST. Newport is a great place to visit..a lonely one to live in though.
I went there to write the great American Novel.. Somehow I never found the time.. My job as a Special Education Aid at Yaquina View Elementary kept me too busy. I never tired of driving back and forth over that Bridge from my home in South shore, .but I certainly found the loneliness and the inspiration in the landscape. The quiet of the great expanse of the ocean as I traversed the bridge. I thought every day about the man who designed and built the Bridge, as well as what life had been like for the generations of people from the time before white man sailed into that port in Cape Foulweather, I oftenhad dreams about the Lightkeepers family at Cape Perpetua, what must that have been like..to LIVE there..then?I thought about them all..every day..all their ghosts had lunch with me every day, for a half an hour a day, in the teacher's lounge, while I ate my tuna fish sandwich in silence. Right on through until today. The people still cling to that bay..the bridge still stands. The Tsunamis still threaten.. Somehow I never could get their story down on paper.
Then again..Hemmingway said he could not write about Paris while he was actually in Paris. He has to go to Idaho to write about Paris.

Wearing masks outside. People are neurotic (and afraid). Sad. Problems with wearing a mask:
    1) rebreathing CO2 increases carbonic acid in the blood (changing blood pH to be more acidic) causing respiratory acidosis-which may lead to metabolic acidosis depending on compensation.
    2) masks harbor bacteria. Warm, dark, moist environments (like the inside of your mask) grow bacteria. Masks are only supposed to be used for like an hour or two and tossed. But people reuse their disgusting masks increasing their chance of having a bacterial or fungal respiratory infection-which is worse than viral infections and mostly require antibiotics therapy.
    3) many medical masks are effective against droplets and have decent filtration (N95 especially). Cloth masks are a joke as viruses are very, very small (you need an electron microscope to view SARS-CoV2, for instance). Touching your mask, lowering it under your chin, man-you have to realize and understand how germs spread. Your mask is a fomite.
    4) many disposable, Chinese masks have residual ethylene oxide and formaldehyde (carcinogenic) which are unacceptable in many health quality standards.
    5) masks have become an environmental nightmare. Masks have been the #1 littered thing in the entire world-found in creeks, seas, etc. Prior to COVID, Environmentalists cried about the oceans containing plastic junk islands the size of small countries. Masks and gloves have compounded that.
    6) Socially, we respond to body language and facial language. Wearing a mask creates a social barrier not only politically, but psychosocially. It also creates barriers to people who are hard of hearing, which is primarily the elderly.

South Beach fish market is a RIPOFF. Most of their food is canned and from China. Prices are high and food is AWFUL. You want good food at decent price go to Newport Cafe, downtown Newport. Another great place is DORYS, south end of Lincoln City on the 101. My wife and I go to Newport from Springfield several times a year.
