  • This is a side by side comparison of the HQ680 Tough Cut deck vs the new MW720 fine cut flail mower from Ventrac. The tough cut definitely moves faster, But the cut quality of the flail is amazing. This really shows the difference. If you would like to check out these attachments andcthe other attachments Ventrac has to offer just click on the link below.

    The tough cut is absolute BEAST! I need to get me one of the flail mowers. Looks like it does an incredible job!

    That test material is tailor made for the flail. The rear roller makes all the difference. Its what the tc can do beyond mow tall grass that makes it so versatile imo. I know of one guy that tried to see how much the flail could handle and came up with broken hammers the first week he owned it. Admittedly, he was jamming it in places it probably shouldn't have been... still, it was easy work for a tc. The flail would be perfect for the guys that can't or purposely don't mow their properties every week. Retention pond work, monthly field work would be a perfect fit. Take it where the tc can go and it might get its feelings hurt.

      I totally agree. The flail will never replace the tough cut. The fast cut is more suitable for more overgrown material, But will never chop down trees. If you are in very rough terrain the tough cut will be a better choice due to the roller will not get in the way. The roller is what stripes. There are some applications that the flail win tho. A friend of mine has a Deere compact that he uses for jobs here and there. There are 2 people that pay him to mow there horse pasture, But they both told him he could not use his brush cutter because they did not like the finish. So he has to use his finish mower and go over it twice. He is looking for a flail. They pay him pretty good from what he told me. The flail will never replace the tough cut, But it is a great addition to the Ventrac lineup. I will say that Ventrac did there homework on this flail. It is very well designed and built.

    Great comparison! It's neat to see the difference in cut quality. The flail mowers really do an awesome job, it's a wonder they were never more popular for garden tractors. I'd take one of them over a typical rotary mower any day.

      I really like flail mowers as well. The only reason I think rotary mowers are more popular is due to the ease of sharpening the blades.

    Great video, I agree with you on the comment you made between the 2....the difference is the time or cost to deal with the knives of the flail than just 3 blades on tough cut....
    Would love to see the finish mower against the flail in high material like this that you just cut
    Thanks....

    If you just want to knock it down, and save fuel/time... use the Tough Cut. If you want smaller clippings, a better finished product, and longer mowing intervals (slower regrowth), use the Fine Cut Flail.

  • @thehammah8444
    @thehammah8444 Před rokem

    I think they are different tools for different operations... good to know the tough cut can mow a hay field... but I believe the tough cut is for clearing brush and brambles. The flail? WOW it cut up grass and clover knee deep and left a clean cut with stripes? fantastic... If I had to choose one? it would be the tough cut... I think I will have more business clearing brush than cutting lawns that got away and are overgrown..I will try and talk the boss into both though 😂

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před rokem +1

      The flails definitely give a nice cut quality. The Tough Cut is the most versatile tho. You can cut heavy brush then light weeds. When cutting heavy dense growth the flails really mulch up the material and leave a nice clean cut.

    I think you really want to compare the MW flail with a 72”finish deck. The MW has the wide or duck foot flail and is more for grasses so heavy material like this cuts well but slower than the Tough Cut, but faster with a better finish than the finish deck that would bog down and leave clumps of clippings. If you had the MY flail I think you would see an much different result against the Tough Cut. Plus why didn’t you set the MW at the same height as the Tough Cut? That by itself skews the performance comparison. I just spent several days with the Tough Cut in heavy grass on a mountain side. I know how slow abs how many times it got bogged down and I had to lift the deck or back up. I just got a MY flail yesterday and started out testing cut height and speed in a hay field. I know the MY will outperform the Tough Cut in that same field. Good video overall though. Thanks for posting it.

      @steiger256  Před 3 lety

      I did do a test with the MW and finish mower. Will be published soon. I agree after making the video I don't know why I didn't set them both at 3 1/2. I was trying to push the limits on the flail and the diesel, But I should have raised it for the tough cut test. I wanted to do a test pass with flail at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 inches but I had so many other tests to do and very little time. I was supposed to have 4 days to demo, But it rained 2 of them so I was pretty limited. I do hope to demo the fast cut someday.

    It would be interesting to see how well the fine cut flail cuts with dull blades? More than likely they will be dull and not sharp, seeing how many there is to sharpen.

      I did end up going back over it with the flail. You could do that if you had both attachments. I will have anotger video soon on the flail with 8 inch high material. It goes pretty quick over that. I wanted to show the fine cut in really tall thick groth to show what it could do. If I can I am going to try to get my hands on a MY720 fast cut and try same tests.

    Great honest review, thanks. Question are the decks the same width on the video the flail looks to be a bit wider? And if the 72" flail is pushing the diesel to its limit would the narrower flail be a better match and allow you to cut quicker or attack even tougher areas better?

    • @steiger256
      @steiger256  Před 3 lety

      The flail is 72 inch cut, tough cut is 68 inch. The smaller may work better on the diesel. If I took my time the diesel cut right thru. I am trying to get my hands on a fast cut flail here soon. They are pretty hard to get ahold of. Maybe by the end of September I will have a video of that as well.

    • @gasify
      @gasify Před 3 lety

      It depends on which flail you have. The MW flails may be worth giving a sharpening or two, but maybe cheap enough to discard. The MY flails are much heavier and can take several sharpenings plus they have two sides to work with to really extend the useful life.
