Is Isom #1 A Game Changer? Moronic Opinions Ep 1

- WARNING! SPOILERS THROUGHOUT!
Just a little video giving my thoughts on the indie comic Isom #1 written by Eric July with pencils by Cliff Richards from Rippaverse Publishing. Big special thanks to Mister Jones for his script editing skills.
EDIT 8/21/2023
I made a mistake when I said Isom #1 is a page shy from the average monthly issue story arc of four issues. Isom #1 is 83 pages and a four issue story arc would be 88 pages. Isom #1 is actually FIVE pages short. None the less, I stand by my statement that 80 pages is enough time to tell a complete story.

This may be a pin of shame. But this is funny.
I used to be a fan of channels who supported Eric like HvB or Nerdrotic, but the way they labelled and dismissed every criticism as racist trolls jealous of Eric's monetary success was the limit. They're acting just like Disney and Marvel who they criticise. Not everyone were trolls, multiple people were fans genuinely asking for honest reviews. Even among the actual trolls I don't think jealousy is the main motivation. Most trolls just want to screw with people simply because it's fun and they enjoy the reactions that fuel further trolling, of which Eric gave them plenty.
Ain't that the truth...good points.
it wears thin rather fast when they act better than those they are criticising then stoop to the same lows they do
HvS acts like he's better than everyone.....he's literally a glorified CZcams commenter. He's on his knees for eric.
Ab-so-lutely 👍
This. Also, "Pull Up, let's do conflict!"
/911, what is your emergency?
Always good to critique our own so we don't become an echo chamber and improve over time.
Great writing is a maskless hero with a secret identity.. at least Clark wears glasses to distract things. And as man who wears glasses you'd be surprised how much in real life that alters things
I laughed way too hard at Calvary😆😆 How the hell did he confuse those words?!?!
Been curious about ISOM not the biggest July fan but every other video was mostly live stream like rambles about the comic. I appreciate the editing and organized arguments. Shine on.
How much money have you made from a comic book? Lmao exactly so stfu
I very much appreciate the detail of your explanations. Using a wide range of comics and movies as examples made everything easier to understand. Great choices on examples. Props to your editor.
It's good to hear an acutely constructive review that isn't sabotaging itself by treating their own review as a bad joke or a big gotcha moment.
I bought a copy proudly and with a lot of hope. You voiced the majority of my complaints and gave words to others I had trouble explaining. Still, I want to be hopeful for improvement so I've ordered issue 2. Though honestly, I'm more looking forward to Yaira and Alphacore/Alphacorps.
Subbed.
Thank you.
I'm still waiting on my preorder of 2 to ship. I'm not expecting it to be any better, but I'll give it a fair shot and I do plan on finishing this arc. I'm interested in Alpahcorps but that's mainly due to the team behind it. It'll be a while before I cover that though, I'll wait until I can buy a cheap secondhand copy. $40+ is too much for a book with so few pages if you ask me, even if the story is good.
@@OhNoJeszilla Will you review ISOM #2?
@@ne9835 In the works right now. I'm putting the finishing touches on my script today and should start principal recording this afternoon. It took a MONTH for my preorder of Isom #2 to arrive, so it's taken me a lot longer than I hoped to get started.

This was highly entertaining, I’m eager to see where you go from here.
Entertaining for who lmao how much money he making?
Is this video going to make a million like isom issue #1?

I don’t know why I just spent over an hour watching someone else say everything that I’ve been thinking about this piece of crap. In any case, I feel validated. Can’t wait for the next one. Curious if you think the writing has improved, as so many people tell me it has, or if you’ll reach the same conclusion that I did: That Eric July managed to become a WORSE writer from issue to issue.
it's his Ego that makes him a target for critics and trolls.
It is his Ego that makes him such a bad writer.
He is like that kid we all knew growing up who would play pretend but have all the super powers and had anti-whateversuperpoweryouhave cloaks and devices.
Basically too scared to be weak and make this makebelief believable.
I love what this magician once said: "without a convincing story, it's just cheap tricks"
Worst part is, Eric is too self-centred to even steal fully or copy parts of people's stories to make it all even somewhat relatable.
At least he has a nice warehouse and warehouse related things.
Thanks for the review! The people I usually rely on for reviews are unreliable when it comes to ISOM. They’re too busy sniffing rippa’s farts.
I feel like Eric July one of greatest scammers on our planet, comic so generic that at first i thought it's from 1995
E. Thanks for the in depth review. I think it is important to separate hype and identity from product.
No one should be afraid of critique, you should never shy away from personal growth.
if Eric sees this video, I hope it motivates him to improve; especially if he intends on writing Isom himself
That would be a nice thought if he did see it, saw the short comings, and worked to learn from them but that won't happen. I'm going to guess you haven't seen how both he and his community react to negative criticism.

I don't have a problem with Eric or most of his views and I also bought his comic book, but your overview of ISOM is dead on. If I could add my personal opinion: Eric strikes me as a fan of modern comics, which I feel are trash, and he has produced a modern comic...(long pause) just my opinion.
I started watching Eric's videos a few years ago but stopped not too long after because it was just the same video over and over. I agree that there's writers out there heavy handedly pushing agendas but it's really a minority of stories that it's happening in that are getting a bunch of press. The biggest problem I've seen with modern comics has been mediocre writing and a lot of artists trying to be Goran Parlov. Around 2016 is when the idea of, "Hey, just start reading old stuff," hit me when I didn't like what was being released. Despite the praise and criticisms around Isom, I went into it expecting another mediocre comic at best/worse. I'm working on a review for #2 right now. There's just been some delays due to tech issues, illness, and my job. This is what I'll say about #2 now: The first arc isn't even finished and the series has already jumped the shark.
Fake review dude never bought isom just making up stories because he's a LGBT freak

Everything's prepared but i need to record and edit, which have been the fastest steps with the vids I've done so far. I'm feeling better now but i'm still coughing a lot which has made my attempts to record very difficult.
Eric looks more annoyed when people tried to help him.
Who needs help from a bunch of basement dwelling freaks ?
It seems to suffer from what a lot ( most) of these crowd funded culture war comics do a lack of editor or creativity and terrible art..
A lack of story / world building also happens in most 1st time writer and that's head cannon.
Sure the characters may have motivation s in writers mind but the writer is to shallow to see that the reader can't read his mind and needs that info on the page
The worst part is that many of his fans left a "review" and claim that it never has politics despite the huge angle that Texas secedes from the union (a major political plot point) which is why "world building" shouldn't be an excuse. The Umbrella Academy was also written by an first time writer who was a musician so the last thing Eric July should ever do is compare writing comics to doing music.
How's that working out for you bum?
I think they specifically mean “identity politics”.
@@carbootstudios2459no, they always say "politics."

Very well done. Much research and life experience went into this and it's clear. Thank you for the quality content
I was not expecting to hear Maddox's classic hit "I am the Greatest Man in the World" in this video essay.
Cringe af
This is the best most comprehensive review of ISOM I have seen.
I'm wanting to give his story the chance to grow and see where the arc goes in the end, but I agree, the story telling wasn't overly intriguing, and while there were some hints of interesting aspects in the 2nd one more so, I still don't feel like we've seen a big interesting payoff. That moment where the story hits it's stride and shows me what it can be at it's best. Respect to your criticisms and I hope he sees this video as it comes across as non-bias and fair. Which, due to the political nature of his persona and the comic book industry (as well as those who make content within it), is hard to find.
Then bye. Nobody cares
Lol, wtf is this response? I literally said I'm wanting to give it a chance and see where it goes but that it also does need a bit of work. Man is acting like I just refused to go to his birthday party and he is trying to play it cool. @@ricksanchez7250
great, well written, review. i knew Isom was gonna be bad when he started off the first page of his first issue with "Two Weeks Earlier", then the following scene with "Earlier", while no further reference to time is made in any other scene. I came here from your Isom #2 review I dont' know how I missed this one. This was an amazing review
Uncanny X-men 213 was the beginning of my love for comic books and the marriage of art forms presented therein- this ain’t that, this is a CZcamsr selling merch
I never considered myself a huge comics person. I definitepy enjoy superhero movies, and have read a handful of comic series. I got nothing out of ISOM. The fans dont even like it.
I read the latest run of Incredible Hulk, and Ive found it enjoyable. I refuse to believe all of modern comics are shit. However, the comicsgate alt-media that Ive read have been bad. I have no idea how they expect to compete with marvel or dc when the stories are awful, and the people behind them are terrible people.
You can at least shit on Marvel and DC without getting DMCA'd or having the ceos going on twitter calling you a r-slur or screaming "pull up".
In the end, there will be a new grift and all of the rippaboyz will be stuck celebrating shitty overpriced comics nobody wants to read.
Its about time somebody mentioned that shitty artwork!
I love Rippa but he REALLY needs a better penciler, colorist and inker.
Nothing on the pages POP!
Everyone but the letterer?
There are some problems I have with this comic without even reading it, say for the AlphaCore/AlphaCorps typo.
1. Why is the main character's superhero persona named "Isom"? It's a generic name that barely anyone knows, and was allegedly stolen from a Christian school. (The cross on his belt buckle doesn't seem to help his case much.) The idea of a superhero name is to give an identity to tell us what the superhero is, Batman is themed around bats, Spider-Man (The superhero Eric July seems to hold a grudge over.) is themed around spiders, etc. But Isom doesn't tell me what powers it has. Why not come up with a name such as "Rippaman" or "Captain Ripper" or something? Yes, I know, there's an obvious joke about farts here, but it would at least be better than a generic name not many people will recognize.
2. Why are the police wearing green? Is this "Independent Texas" Communist or something? Police normally wear blue, and the reason was in the UK, blue contrasted with red. Green is usually worn by Park Rangers (Fitting for a town named Flores Park.), NOT cops. It's an easy design fix.
3. Why isn't Yaira wearing her supersuit? Did her husband (If she has one ) or other family members put it away even in her time of need? I know it sounds weird hearing me say this, but, superheroes tend to have keep their identities a secret, so why isn't Yaira wearing her supersuit? (Though, it's not like the suit itself is that great, since it looks like it was stolen from Scarlett Witch but painted blue, so, who am I to judge?)
4. Speaking of poor design choices, Isom's suit looks so bland. Aside from the yellow and black colorscheme, there's not much that makes it stand out. And the Christian Cross looks like it was lifted from Bibleman, but at least Bibleman looked more interesting, with some added details to the suit. Why didn't they just put an I for Isom on the chest, or, of they went with something more akin to Rippa, why not put an R on the chest? It would at least give us something to distinguish him.
The impression I get is that people have been putting money into this project more for the big picture pitch (creating indie businesses/economies). They are willing to overlook the substandard story and product. It seems like most of the people who are friends with Eric July are like what I described. Personally, I don't blame them because I might try to do that for a friend too. Long term though, I think July and his company will need to rely more on merit and quality rather than prior relationships and hype, or the income and attention the "Rippaverse" project gets will regress to some kind of lower baseline.
What doesn't help is how July responds to criticism. His whole thing is "monetize your haters". OK, that's fair, but it doesn't take away from the fact that July is hostile and aggressive to sincere constructive criticism too. Because of this, I don't see why people like Dick Masterson would ignore or give up on milking those types of reactions from July, his staff, friends, and acquaintances. They're either knowingly or unwittingly subjecting themselves to trolling.
These people are haters though, this loser proved that by actually going to the grave of Eric’s ancestor and desecrated it, and he now has it as his pfp on his twitter socials, how can you say they’re not haters when they are literally disrespecting his family irl…

55:49 You know you're definitely NOT a grifter when you put an ad in the middle of your comic that isn't similar to anything to half to do with the book, but you financially benefit from it
Knowing Eric July's past in gang activity (According to Wikipedia at least.), and how much of a complete jerk Eric July is when someone mildly criticizes him, Avery seems to be a self-insert of Eric in every single way. Now, there isn't anything wrong with that, Rick Riordan based Percy partially on himself and his son, but at least there Percy wasn't portrayed as an unlikable jerk who torments others for his own amusement, he just had bad ADHD and had trouble controlling his impulses. And the times he did cross the line, he did get called out by Grover and Annabeth when he was going too far in many situations. Avery is like someone reading the cliffnote's versions of Percy's character that people post everywhere on TikTok of him being an idiot and also incorrect descriptions of Percy Jackson being misogynistic that TikTokers tend to portray. And I guess it's fitting, because Isom feels like Fox's bastardizations of Percy Jackson with the two "main characters" feeling like how Fox butchered Percy and Annabeth.
Percy Jackson was after my time, so I can't relate.
I have seen how Eric July reacts to criticism though, it's kinda funny how he says he doesn't care about what people think but has to argue with them after criticism. Someone who doesn't care wouldn't interact. As a troll, I tweeted this out on a Rippaverse thread this morning and I learned that the fanbase really is as insane and cultish as I have heard. Their instant reaction was to call me a biased liar who never read the book and then I was met with, "I didn't finish watching the video," when I asked for counterpoints to my arguments because I am open to friendly debate. The calling me biased ended up feeling particularly ironic from that crowd after seeing their behavior. I've never seen anything like it before, it was like they watched me strangle a baby.
@@OhNoJeszilla I have also been on that fandom.Any critism is met with the duncest rebutals ever.I have pointed out many times that the characters dont have consistent looks and someone said it didnt matter

@@OhNoJeszilla His fanbase wont grow at this rate. The writing is subpar at best.I beleive 2 was an improvement but still subpar. They may argue that the comic has only 2 issues but my fav manga got my attention in 1 chapter.
@@gamedragonja8962 I agree. But there are a lot of people who will be happy with subpar. The comic has 83 pages of story, there should be something that hooks you in that amount of pages even if part of an arc. I used a 30 something page issue of The Amazing Spider-Man that's the middle of an arc that hooked me as a kid based on flipping through and seeing Spider-Man getting the snot beat out of him.

What's funny about Isom #1 is that Darren, the supposed villain, doesn't do anything illegal or immoral in the story. He states he did something illegal in the past to build his wealth but it's not made clear what. I like to think it was tax evasion, serial jaywalking, or unpaid fines.
Darren makes certain comments that are supposed to imply he's pimping out girls, but the way it's worded isn't nefarious. He says something to the effect that having beautiful women around is helpful to his work. Darren runs a nightclub. It's common for nightclubs to hire beautiful girls to hang around to attract dudes to the club. For all we know, Darren only hires beautiful women to be waitresses or bartenders.
The only reason the audience is given to dislike Darren is that Isom and his sister don't like him. It's more fun to think of those two as upper middle class snobs looking down their noses at a man the worked his way up from the bottom. Darren did nothing wrong.
Interesting analysis. Looks like Darren represents someone that July was jealous of for being more successful than he was (being the Avery self-insert).
Avery/July then justifies Darren's success in his mind by saying it was gained illegally and/or by being 'evil'.
Green Lantern Corps did Rippa not want comparisons by naming spinoff Alpha Core (they still wearing green...) It will be interesting to see RV comics written by others and how well they will be received and reviewed.

- tokenised strong powerful white woman - checked
- heroes that in fact are bad (heroes don't kill!) - checked
- bad storytelling - checked
- attacking fans criticquing his products - checked
- attacking race of people that he don't agree with ('white bread ass n-words as he said lately...).
There's more stuff, but this shows that Eric just is woke like people who he says he fight with for better future of comics.
And we who love comics know that we recognise our heroes by content of their characters and deeds - not things that they say...
I wonder if Chuck Dixon will be willing to stay with this guy after all of this controversies - I will not!

I really don''t like the term "Except", it just sounds so odd. And honestly, a simple narration box with ""Except = Superhuman". There, problem solved. In fact, as you pointed out, narration boxes would have helped out tremendously throughout the issue. So many of names are just awful and feel weird when actually said out loud.
This thing seems like a poorly written, averagely drawn vanity project. And the fact that you either have to buy or scour the internet just to have a basic clue on what's going on is a travesty. If Eric really wants to thumb his nose at mainstream comics, then he should probably create a product that isn't qualified enough to line a bird cage.

Most criticism I'd chalk down to this being the first part of three, there's a lot of set up that'll be paid by the end of part three. But also remember that ISOM #1 is the launching pad of a connected universe and that the other characters shown are getting their own stories. So far only AlphaCore, Yaira and Goodyng (in issue 2) are getting their own stories with Norfica and Bloodruth (also in issue 2) are being hinted at as well.
As for why he needs his suit, superhero costumes in this universe have additional utility and for ISOM his is designed to help absorb fall damage since flying isn't something he can do.
I read the first issue. It's whatever. Godslap is way better as far as indie comics are concerned.
Not familiar with Godslap. I'll give it a look.

Eric 100% went inti this assuming all of the people who read this would watch the trailer first. Thats the only good faith interpretation I could give him for the lacking context and information.
I thought Isom was kind of an O.C. parade and it would have been better off as a self -contained graphic novel at that price point.
As far as what you could do to improve your channel's look, you could always draw up a couple more stills of your avatar with different expressions and flip between those for a "barely animated" look.
I hate to say it but I think EJ has a point. You put a lot of work into this post, but constant posting in short-attention-span-friendly clickbait bites builds an audience way better than perfectionism. ( I've had to learn that myself the hard way on different projects.)
1:05:13 The Crow is a perfect story, you're confusing simple and straightforward for flawed, just like thee og Evil Dead its thee artistry and craft that makes them both the highest standards of standards
58:28 If you're gonna bring up a Superhero Taylor, you should have done thee og Black Lighting series, and because it is a Black Superhero worth a damn
There is literally no original art in those isom books, it's all 3d models.
That had yet to be uncovered when I made this review or the one for #2. It sure does explain why the art is so dull.
I read it it’s awful and extremely hard read. It comes off as an old school first comics. You can tell Eric isn’t a great writer and the ideology of keeping politics out is dumb. This is an adult story add it just do it right. Eric should’ve gotten multiple indie writers and worked on creating a universe and planning things out. This screams someone who has no talent in writing. Not even being bad no foresight already has a plot hole how isn’t he recognized as famous if he was a hero who didn’t wear a mask? Why isn’t he in jail and etc. this is likely for the hype one of the worse things I’ve ever read. Darren doesn’t come off as a big threat throughout the story. It would’ve been better if Isom loses the fight and he’s forced to train to get back into his Hero shape. I could think of multiple better ways he could’ve done this
Gah!!!! He sold CARDS with info to the characters & story? And didn’t put it in the story? Which would’ve probably made it better.
17:34 11 Cards for 100 bucks, my complete set of 90 Richard Corben Cards costed 19 bucks (and that's shipping included), if that doesn't prove Eric is just as much a Grifter as a shitty writer than I don't need what will

Evil Dead. Love the original trilogy.
You pronounce Florespark like Mike Matei's Inspector Gadget lol
You should do a review of Superkiller when it comes out... do it for mrs.newman!
I'm a backer and I plan on it. I'll be honest on my thoughts about it good, bad, or ugly. I like Vito but if what he makes is worth of such a deep dive ravaging, I'll do it.
I have a question for you. Are you trying to send him suggestions at all?
8:42 Yeah I'll Admit that the Book only did 3.7 Million because Comic Book Fans were desperate for ANYTHING That was remotely pleasant to them and didn't block them for Political Opinions and Criticizing the Writers decisions with their Diverse characters as 'Ultimately rather shallow beyond 'Did I mention I'm {X}' at Best and Criticizing their Actions as being more villainous and Self-Insert esque at worst.
Which Reflects even WORSE on the Social Justice Age of Comics and how Bad their PR and relation to Fans (or outright Anatagonism of them as some believe) is, that this Book can do SO GOOD Even with these Issues it has.
Shut up, John, Skoal!
very cool and based
I think Eric July is the kind of guy who things vagueness is the same as complexity. Too much going on at the same time, none of it explained, nobody has clear motives for why they do anything or act the way they do. It's not complex, it's just not fully fleshed out.
WOW. Putting vital story information outside of the story, instead of in the story. Where have I heard that before? Star Wars sequels, cough. cough
Well done
You're a loser
Not everyone can do what Lee/Kirby/Ditko accomplished with Marvel, just turn to Image, or Archies own line of superhero comics as well as numerous other upstart comic book companies that have tried, some with great success, others with not so good of an outcome, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't give it a go, which is exactly what Eric July is doing, trying, like many others out there to create an alternative for the Big 2 ,whom have been putting out less than stellar work ,hiring none comic fans to rewrite the worlds they have been handed and deconstructing them to rubbles, at least July is a true fan of comics and is hoping to give readers comics that feel like comics, not political or self-referential characters that all sound the same and come off as talking heads for nonsense, is the book too pricey ,maybe ,but he is putting up all the capital himself and that's no small feat ,obviously time will tell how well his company will hold up in the long run but seeing how he is aligning himself with heavy hitters from the industry one can only speculate great things are yet to come, and going back to Image comics it took them awhile to established themselves ,yes they were successful from the get go but it took time for them to build a stronger entity something Eric July seems to be doing at possibly faster rate ... that in itself is worthy of admiration.
"Exceptionals", but everyone just calls em excepts are....... Just a very basic example of a helpful line to invest us in the main part of the world. I guess he doesn't want a book with exposition? But the alternative is a world that is difficult to invest in, because nothing about the world is clearly explained. Either through exposition crafted into narration or weaved in the dialogue of characters. Those are just two ways I can think of. There is some. But for as long as the comic book is. There is little told about the world and characters. Many characters are present in the story. But we get nothing from them that lines of dialogue about them could not have said. Little progress is made in the book's main story arch. What I thought was going to be the ranch hand getting kidnapped by the main villain's goons ended up not going in that direction xD. Which, would have been cool and escalated the main story. Things are mentioned, characters are "introduced", there is an arch present. Its trajectory is not good. And it's even worse after book 2. Though I liked getting a little more on ISOMS backstory. The best part about book 2. I'm excited for the next few books hoping they may improve things story-wise and give me something to chew on. Like ISOMS backstory in book 2. We'll see

Nop, at most is a 4~5/10
I gave it 1 out of 5.
isom is a badly written low quality copy of powerman, that eric self inserted so he could get back at all the nightclub bouncers, that didn't let him into the nightclubs when he was younger, he brags about the money, equating it to success, I remember when he and the fnt zeros all went after captain marvel for being a piss poor movie that made a billion dollars, well it was a piss poor movie, and the financial success had nothing to do with the quality, just like eric's comic book, but now money is the standard for success.
I’m all for constructive criticism, but trying to mock someone by taking a photo of their ancestor’s grave with malicious intent and posting it online for all to see doesn’t exactly make you look good.
