- Welcome back to the channel! Its been a while but we are still going strong, and things are going great. Come in the woods with me and follow along as as I cut some nice hardwood mat logs. Also I stop by the farm and give a quick update on whats growing and going on there. Dont forget to like, comment and most importantly subscribe!
love to see a young guy cutting and skidding by hand anymore! started in the woods in 1965 used everything from horses to crawler to skidder now farm tractor cutting softwood for my own mill lots of friends had the old 230s with a jimmy love to hear them brings back memories!!
Unfortunately there arent many of us! Either everyone else is smarter or I just dont know any better haha. It was good to hear from you, sounds like you have some experience under your belt! Thanks for watching
Great video, when i was a kid my step dad was a logger up in Wyoming through out the 90's and early 00's. He had a red timber jack skidder, when i was 9 he (made) me drive that thing a little up a logging road, i was scared to death😅.
This vid brought back some great childhood memories.
We'd camp out up in the mountains for a month or so at a time for his logging, good times.
Most people have never heard of a skidder but its still my favorite and most bad#ss machine of all time.
Awww...look at the cute baby skidder.
Life comes in seasons, not all are easy and not all are long, god bless.
Well said! thanks
Amen
Some nice looking ash hard working in the humidity timberjack looks great
Ran a 240 back 1989 hurricane hugo i was 8 year old 453 with funk manual transmission lol no steering wheel 😆! Bout to cry I miss them days.
Good to see a Maine Logger sharing video’s. I lived in Oxford County, Town of Oxford most of my life. Left Maine in 2015 for Florida. Keep um coming. Jon V.
I'm glad you found us, it's nice to hear from people like you!
Worked at Sanborn Machine in Waterford for 32 year’s. Building sawmill machinery. In 1984 worked for Record Lumber putting together Merle’s Mill for a year. Then went back to Sanborn until 2003.
Really enjoy the logging videos!
When I was young and just newlywed I worked in the words of northern Ontario a young guy just moved up there from West Texas and it was bitterly cold then for quite a few years I took my young family up to the bush for the week it was really good bonding time with family and just a little 10 x 16 Shack bring food and water for the week it was wonderful
That sounds like some really great memories, we take a hunting trip every fall up near Escourt station on the Canadian border and I can almost imagine the days of living in the bush up there and cutting wood in the middle of nowhere's. Peaceful really
Cable & chokers. Grandpa and dad had 2 old timberjacks. One had the steering wheel, the other had the swing stick steering, gears shift between the knees. I remember my mother pulling shard of steel cable out of the old mans hands before dinner lol great video!! Best of luck down there! Stay safe!
Yeah those little cable shards can really get you good! Thanks!
very glad to see you back making videos you do a awsome job keep em coming
Stay safe buddy, great ole skidder, really enjoyed your video
What a fantastic video, and that Timberjack... sensational
Love what you do man!! You do just about everything I think that’s COOL!!!💯👍🏻💯❤️
Great video!!! Love your skidder.
Thanks, good to hear from you!
glad to see you back, russet burbank are my fav.
Trees are like snowflackes, no two fall the same way. Felt like I was at work again .Timberjacks and Huskys, only way to cut hardwoods.Approve of your tailgate sharpening although I usually tighten the chain a bit first to take up some side slop. Cheers mate from Ontario.
Well said!
Watching from Lubec.
Holy cow, I've been waiting for videos for months, thought you quit lol. Love your vids...keep em coming. It's been mighty hot and logging is hard to handle in the heat. This year is pretty much opposite of last year precipitation wise. No market for wood here in Charlotte county till fall. Everyone has been going nuts building decks so there is a major shortage of deck lumber here. As a contractor it has been a bit of a pain in the butt lol. Corona has the world gone crazy...hope it blows over soon. Take care and keep the vids coming sir.
Like your videos fellows . i live in the deep woods of northeast texas an i haul logs every day to the mills in valliant an idabel oklahoma across the river . i drive a big western star log truck an pull a 45 foot bunk log trailer get up at 3 or 400am an usually home around 600pm every day its some long days in the woods on the road an at the mills . good videos folks
Love hearing that Detroit.
Glad to see you and the family doing well, to bad about the strawberries. Take care.
It sure is....but we learned something for the next attempt haha good to hear from you
Last couple weeks the Humidity has been crazy. Glad to see you are out and about.
Humidity in Maine? That’s funny, come on down here to Mississippi, you’ll see humidity, high 90’s everyday with almost 100% humidity, makes it feel like 110°, you walk out the door in the morning and it’s like a wet towel slapping you in the face.
Been logging for 21 years.
@@SykesFW Yes you may have that humidity. But Mississippi has some of the best people I've ever met. I would gladly take on that humidity to be around those kind of people again.
Glad to see you still kicking, markets took a huge hit here in NH too... have a good one 👍🏻
Yeah unfortunately we just got to weather the storm!
Just came across your channel.40 plus years ago use to cut for GP, we had a 230 cut a lot of wood back in the day .Thanks for the video.
They say those were the good old days to be a logger!
Always looking for good videos...looks like I found one 👍
What’s up man. From buxton Maine. I have a channel in Florida now. Good to see Maine content.
Great video! I love the old Timberjacks. I remember cutting wood with my dad years ago in the heat, We would start really early and try to finish up early. Take care
Start early, leave early thats my summer slogan too! Thanks
Awesome vdieo👍
ah McCormick farms... big farm, awesome farm. worked there a couple seasons of hay there as well as another just down railroad lane outside derby. also worked at the dairy farm up by dover before the owner passed away. that was a sad downfall of a farm
Be safe from central Maine. Finest kind cap !!! Lol
WE LIKE OUR TIMBERJACK SKIDDER TOO
Like that little skider i never ran one of those small skiders some day id like one i have farm tractors and used big skiders 360and 460 jacks good but realy tippy on side hill fater the tire the beter i found also used tj 380 that was best. I like those little john deer skiders always wanted on even though i barly log it still be nice around on the farm ive got lots of woods
Yeah those bigger jack can really get it done. Im sure youd like running one of these smaller machines, its actually pretty enjoyable to putter around through woods in them!
Hi, We have a 460 DA, Jack, havent rolled it yet. On some of them the wheels can B turned around, so the dish is in 4 narrow, and out 4 wide. The ground clearance is high, and they will pull a big stack. We sometimes use the grapple, then hook up 4 more with the winch. Our old JD 640 cable, is a good all around skidder 2.
Glad I found your channel today. Good content. Way too many channel grow their subs and all of a sudden they feel the need to become an entertainer/comedian then want to sell me something
Find a piece of 2inch pipe about 3ft long weld a 4x4 inch on the ends then two short chains. Bolt that under the arch. Then put half your cables on one side the other half on the other and let your last cable drag. Much quicker hanging your cable in the slot. Plus when pulling winch cable the slides will usually stay put
New sub nice job man lay in there
Thanks for the sub!
Nice Vid Scott. Being a Logger my self I stop on these forestry videos quite a bit. That's a nice little skidder you have. I was wondering if that has the 53 series detroit in it? I like that edge you have on the top of that arch. Very handy. Be careful in there by yourself. Thank you.
Not sure where you're cutting but you got the best job in the world I run one of them skidders of years ago in New Hampshire now I'm stuck in southern Maine climbing trees and wish I was logging . careful
Some really awesome video of the skidder in action, I really enjoyed that......stay cool and stay safe my friend, thanks for the update, when are you going to put the potatoes out for sale?
Yeah the skidder is always an interesting beast to watch and listen to! We are gonna start selling them this weekend, still ironing out how to sell to people in a manor that respects the whole new protocol but we will figure something out that works for everyone
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 We have a little self serve operation going here, sales are slow but it works, I cut a slot in and old metal toolbox for the cash.......life is good.
I owed one of those in the 70 sure would like to see that in action iam retired operator and i think like the skidder viedio more than dozers and scrapers etc maybe i can visit your place next when the covid has died down
Absolutely, would love to show you around!
Those old tj are neat old skiders love the easy in cab those 550s are all i use and i have all the big ones the more experienced i get 550 20' bar isent much i cant cut with it and i use big saws when i need i dont know if my 372 395 660 would start its ben that long i have stihl 271 i think its their 550but stihl and that is great saw so far
Nice video tough logging in this heat. I see you have a timberjack hat where did you get it. I don’t ever see any
around anymore
Harolds Logging in Hampden Maine, they are a skidder parts store and have probably every part you need on the shelf for timberjack, clark, tree farmer etc.
You ought to look into getting one of the new Stihl 3 in one sharpeners. I decided to try one and found it well worth the money. They sharpen the cutters and drop the rakers at the same time. Be sure you get the right pitch for the chain. I use to drive a Timberjack, an older version of yours, many, many years ago. The sad thing the owner of the company was one of these guys who "ran it until it broke." That's why I left. Saying hi from NH.
I guess i need to get one of those sharpeners, ive heard from several other people who swear by them as well. Its a shame, unfortunately a lot of these old machines were just run into the grave by previous owners...
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 Yeah I like old stuff. I still have my third chain saw. It ran great until my son borrowed it. He cuffed it with a small tree and cracked the gas tank. It's a Stihl 031. I had an 030 before that. I've forgotten the make of my first saw--that was close to 50 years ago.
Sounds like U do a little bit of everything. Its good that U dont have to rely completely on logging. We have a pretty good 18' mat log market, also rail road 8'8", tie market, here in west Wisconsin.
Yes luckily I dont have all my eggs tied up in the logging industry, but it still hurts when things tank like they are... Are the rail ties hardwood?
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 Hi, Things "tanked", back in about 08, even at times before that. Markets will eventually improve. We R also into Excavating/Bulldozing/Rock Trucking, mostly Ag and Township, work, so we have that 2 take up da slack. Yes ties R hardwood mostly #2 & #3, oak, maple, ash, hickory, cherry, birch, etc. Back a few years I bought a Bell 3 wheeler, cutter from a logger at Grey? In south east Maine. Would like 2 get up 2 C that country, some day.
Good vid. Just subscribed 👍
Thanks for the sub!
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 You bet. I just started my own as well. Check it out sometime
Where you sending your pulp and mat logs to.
I was cutting hardwood in Livermore Falls and turner back in early 80’s. We sent wood to either IP or Boise. Like the huskies too. Although 550 might be a little under appreciated on large oak.
So the pulp for the most part goes to sappi, and those mat logs went to maine timber mats in New Portland. Yeah the 550 stays in the truck when there is big oak or rock maple to be cut haha
I've harvested lots of good Ash timber in my time and have always treated with a lot of respect as it will split so easily. Never pushing off the butt, always straight felling and limbing it before skidding it out. Presented well it demands a good price here in the UK.
Almost worthless in the northeast USA. Mostly just pulpwood or mix a bit in with firewood orders. I’ll save a real nice butt log but that’s about it.
That always happens when you pull them off the stump. Is that tree an ash?
zat god dam ash borer hit up there ? our ash here in western penn. is bout done !
Just curious do you run on road diesel or off road diesel in the skidder?
I did this in the hills of southwestern Wisconsin for 24 years. There are old loggers. There are bold loggers. But there are no old bold loggers. Lol
Hopefully you will be back
Had the same old skidder can't beat the Hercules winch
Put some wood or rubber under the saw when on skidder save the chain
Hell of a man
Hope you’re using straight 40 weight low ash content oil in that Detroit. That’s what they like.
Stay safe out there. Just subscribed!
Yes indeed it is! Thanks for the sub!
I had an 8v92. Uses the same thing 👍
Yup. Pretty much all the 2-cycle Detroits use it exclusively. I’ve seen pictures of the internal coking that takes place if you use multi-vis oil. Made a believer of me. I get five-gallon pails of oil from Miles Lubricants in New York. You can also order Delo from auto parts stores.
Some pretty nice trees it’s always fun to cut wood like that! How do you like the 225? I think there a pretty hard machine to beat for a one man operation!
Yes it sure is! Love the 225, feels like a Cadillac vs. the clark now that im used to it and know what it can and cant do. I feel like the detroit has endless power going through the standard tranny instead of the clarks automatic/torque converter really sucks some power out of them.
Hi Buddy, I just stumbled across your Vidjas today, glad I did you earned a new subscriber! Oh, and by the way I was born and raised in Maine! Lived in a little town called Warren all of my life
Well thanks! Warren is a nice little spot, have some friends from there
I have a 550 as well and have had nothing but trouble with it.
Sorry to hear that, is it a first generation or the newer Mark II?
First generation. It's been at the dealer as much as I've used it
👍👌🇨🇦❤, new sub, gr8 video
How do u steer that skidder. Levers I'm guessing or foot pedals?. God bless you man
There are actually 3 levers on the dash, one is for the blade up and down, one is for steering, and one controls the winch. Maybe I should do a quick overview of the skidder operation on the next video? Thanks for watching!
Great to see you bud 👍. It's been a while. Life comes first! Just curious on your price per thousand? I log myself with a 91 240A jack. Great machines 👍 be good, be safe.
Hey you got that right! Those mat logs went to Maine Timber Mats in New portland, they pay $450 per thousand. Yeah those 240's are as good as it gets!
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 that's an awesome price. Everything is way down on saw log so it's a no brainier. I love the 230s as well had several. My family is from Stockholm so we know all about the taters!! Best in the world I think. You and your family take care. Be good!!
You have a 225 which was even better. Sorry for the confusion.
Direct drive makes all the difference
I cut by hand in southern Maine N.H. border. I’ve been parked for 3 weeks because of pulp market’s. First time in 30 years.
Sorry to hear that, but yes the markets for pulp are not good. All we can do is weather the storm together and hopefully get by in the meantime. Hang in there and thanks for watching!
Think there was a tv show about logging in maine a few years back
Ive got a couple movies of Maine logging, theyre pretty interesting
Is your forest. .? Where is this. .?
Were you from in Maine?? I know use here in nb Canada are makes have been hit hard. All are hard wood is going to you guys now.
We are down on the mid coast, and yes markets are terrible right now...
How much do it cost you to run your skidder I’m looking into getting on we burn a lot of wood in the winter month
It really varies, but if you have a good machine thats solid and you just need to keep fueled up your looking at minimal costs. These smaller machines with the 3 cylinder detroits sip fuel
Those 550s are realy good saws hade one sense they stoped the 346 the first batch where junk but now they are awsome never owend one worked for asplundh and they saplied them and when i left it sucked giving up all my saws that were in my truck i own a stihl 361 and its actully better for what you do but id rather us a 550 xp any day i still own a good well kept 346xp but yep 550 are best saw once you get to know them had one problem where it stoped spark im like you hate hevy saws its all about sharp chain 18" bar is great unless big pine
Bigger isnt always better! I had a problem with this 550 the first week i bought it, ended up being a pinched breather tube to the fuel tank it kept vapor locking.
Hmm... My wife wants to move to Maine. She keeps telling me that I should look into the logging industry out there. But I don't see anything that they need a West coast Timber Faller for. They barely got what I call a tree.
All the ash in pa is gone. Now we got a spotted fly gonna kill oaks.
Frumoos
I hung drywall inside a 3 story building with little ventilation in 110 degrees weather for 6 weeks. You don’t know hot brother
Nice video! The 550xp is impressive, Mark 1 or 2? Its surprisingly fast for a 50cc.
Mark 2
Yep..all day long..
Sounds like he's from Boston
I Wouldn't won't to pull that cable far with All them Chockers on it
Them old Jimmy's love to b wide open
Screaming Jimmy lol
Where this channel go?
is that a gearmatic winch
Its a Hercules, i think the gearmatic was more popular on the Timberjack 240's but dont hold it to me!
@@mccormickfamilyfarm5511 probably. that is what was on my 240. after I saw the winch better I knew it wasn't a gearmatic
Did you get that hat from randy nason
Sure did!
Toate cele bune
You live in The County?
Down on the coast
208e jack
Have me port the 550 mark2 u won’t run a 562 again
Lol work till 11 when it gets to hot. He’s definitely not from the south!
I don't mean to insult your summers but if you come to alabama well show you humidity
No insult taken haha we have family down South so I know we got it pretty dang good compared to you guys! We just arent used to when it does hit!
What are mat loggs?
Ppp
They make these big wooden matts out of 8x8x16 beams that are aprox 4 feet wide by 16 feet long and use them for environmental protection when heavy equipment needs to pass over a wet area without disturbing the ground below. They use them a lot on power line construction.
230?
225, same exact thing as a 230 just has narrow track axles instead of wide
80 and it’s hot...it was 94 here in south west Florida at 7 am and real feel 101 you Yankee boys are soft lol 😂
Haha I'll be the first to admit I'm not adapted to the heat like you southern guys! Give me 20-30degF and I'm in my glory! Haha take care down there and you can keep the heat
McCormick Family Farm I heard that I was just messing with ya bud have a good one stay safe and keep your powder dry this country is falling apart 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:7)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Get rid of the t- shirt ! Lol
If it's. All that hot why wear a t,shirt and a long sleeve shirt
