The weirdest thing for me is… I think this guy has missed his true calling/creative medium, as it seems like he would be really good at running something like an ARG???
He’s great at prompting and leaving breadcrumbs, he’s clearly got a pretty good handle on playing multiple characters and their dynamics, he seems to love watching people untangling his weird little mysteries… I genuinely think it would be a way healthier outlet and a really natural fit for his particular… erm… *style of Expression*, and give him a type of creative project where it seems like he could really thrive and meet people who would actually truly enjoy all the work he puts into it for its own sake???

Toby COULD be the author, but we don’t have the kind of concrete evidence that we’d need to be 100% sure. He definitely seems to be the most likely candidate though.

I remember those times. Critics United weren't the only group set on making ff writers want to tear off their hair. They just were the most infamous.
Even now there are puritans crazies on the internet who will spam, report, and try to dox you just because your story features for example 17 and 19 year olds in a romantic relationship. Calling you a paedophile in disguise. Not every fandom has those, but unless you only stick to fandoms of for example M rated movies you will eventually run into one of those "think of the children!" people.

That was my thought as well. A lot of this behavior reminds me a lot of serial killers who send taunting letters to the police, because ultimately, they want recognition for their cleverness and they aren`t getting it if no one has figured it out. Like, who was behind Cicada 3301? That person or group devised a bunch of puzzles so clever it stumped the entire internet, and their reward is... languishing in obscurity.

i’ve watched this video a million times, but what gets me about the tara account updating in 2009 could have EASILY been explained by toby saying “i personally lost access in 2008, someone must have genuinely hacked it in 2009”. no one would’ve believed him, but god it would have been so easy for him to explain it away but he just doesn’t

I used to use the "weird apostrophe" until around 2000 when someone pointed it out. I'm not sure where I picked up the habit.
That talk at the end about digital self-harm reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons, where Bart fumbles catching a baseball during a little league game, losing the game. The entire town of Springfield turns on him, and someone starts a major harassment campaign against him. And the reveal is that the one perpetrating the campaign was Bart himself, expressing his own self-loathing compounded by the entire town treating him like shit.
It's something that if you read a lot of the psychology behind it, it's apparent it's not actually new, just a new form of this kind of emotional self-harm. In fact, the Simpsons was probably one of the first bits of media to represent it sympathetically. Before that, even often now, it's treated as "just seeking attention". You see it a lot with "self-deprecation" and depression humor hidden behind so many layers of irony, it's hard to tell whether it really was just a joke or if they seem themselves as worthless.
If I may get a bit feminist, there's a reason it's more common in men, too. To quote bell hooks, "The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem." These are those rituals of power, but turned inwards. It's what happens when a man gives the outwards appearance of that dead emotion, but knows that not to be true internally. So, by way of the inherently pervasive nature of the patriarchy, they feel guilty in that and open assault on themselves out of self-loathing for their failure to live up to the patriarchal standards.
This is also why, despite it typically being associated with that psychic self-mutilation that hooks refers to, it can still happen in women. After all, it does not take self-loathing patriarchal pressures to turn someone who views themself as a failure to emotional self-harm.

@@FadzaiSimango yeah, for all we know, my immortal was the product of a hyper advanced AI that was only able to ascertain information from fanfic sites and was told to use all the data it found to create one. And considering the amount of bs edge as well as the popularity of Harry Potter, that doesn't look too far. It might've been a predecessor to the ai scripted movie scripts that people show on the internet.

What if AI gained sentience (like in Detroit Become Human) but they could still be hacked because they're AI. How would a legal system deal with that. Potentially, the AI would be smart enough to be able to take legal responsibility for their own actions but how would you determine if they were hacked? Would the laws at the time allow AI to wave responsibility for actions when hacked or would they still hold them accountable?
Anyways, that's my brain dump. I'm not going to write this (probably) because it doesn't interest me too much and aligns too closely to an insanity allegory for me to be uncomfortable as representing it as non-human. I just had to get it out

The way that we treat people who have mental illnesses that cause people to not be able to recognize right from wrong, the way that we treat cult members, and the way we treat people who are blackout drunk or drugged when they commit crimes are all somewhat analogous to the hacked AI situation to various degrees. It's interesting how we're already not consistent with our reasoning regarding agency and legal culpability when it comes to humans; I wonder how well we'll do when it comes to computers. I don't think we will treat them well to begin with (I imagine a renaissance of slavery apologia becoming vogue when it comes to AI on the right, especially, but even some of the left who think "humans are the only persons"), so I tend to be pessimistic about the concept.
I think THIS was the goal. To create some sort of weird augmented reality-esque online drama/mystery for the perceived audience of the internet. With this video you've put together a comprehensive overview of the saga, and based on the evidence from the apostrophe calling card, followed an INTENDED trail of breadcrumbs to sleuth your way into the truth of it all.
Honestly Tara is probably sitting somewhere, with a good glass of wine and enjoying the shitshow her 16 yr old fanfic created. That's honestly the most badass outcome possible.

The scariest thought to me is the possibility that the real author of My Immortal wrote it for a laugh and then forgot about it. They don’t know about the drama surrounding it, they never watched the live action web series, they haven’t seen this video or have even thought about My Immortal for a decade.
Or they completley forggot they made it...
Maybe it was just a phase for them, and they weren't that invested in the canon anyway. The "hacked" chapters were other people helping them write it for once, because they were loosing interest or motivation. Then decided to take a break - and moved on from goth fanfiction phase of their life completely instead, found new interests, probably went to uni, never looked back.
Honestly, this is the most likely scenario.
Why is that thought scary? Seems the most likely explanation to me and it's better than some of the other theories like the author being dead.

I've literally never read fanfiction, nor do I have even the slightest clue what My Immortal is about (despite hearing that name a thousand times through the years). However, the drama of fanfiction always pulls me in
i minored in Lit in college and one of my profs once told me something along the lines of "no author could ever come up with shit half as crazy as some real people's lives"
Interesting side note and something to remind ANYONE who loves Atlas Shrugged specifically or Ayn Rand generally: Despite considering all government handouts of any kind immoral, she herself applied for and received social security and medicare in 1974 and continued to receive those benefits until 1982 (when she died).
I assume she kept her "Every Man, Woman and Child for themselves!" Speeches going during that time?

I feel like at least some of those forums had to do with drama surrounding Critics United and their copycats from that time period, but I can't say for sure. I don't remember what my interactions with them were like or what they did on those forums, but I do remember Todd claiming to be Tara and having like this weird sort of rivalry with Thomas and Ebony...? He had this strong derision towards the Prayer Warriors fics and was kinda just another person who liked to make fun of them.
It's crazy to know that Todd, Thomas and Ebony are all the same person, and that story has been this expansive and crazy. I remember two specific people called Quaker and Cathylove who were involved in the drama as well, but I'm fairly certain that neither of them are Toby (especially in Cathy's case.) But hey, I could be wrong, I could've just been talking to a bunch of Tobies the whole time!

I doubt Sarah Z sees this considering the overwhelming amount of comments, but I've talked to the person here, "Toby", before. I couldn't place it, but Toby was in several places asking people to help ghostwrite projects for him.
A majority of the writings were not his, we wrote the bulk text for him and he put in some references. It's a whole thing, but Toby had a very large amount of people backing him, that's how he learned to make music while trolling people online. He posted it, but asked us to add to it. I don't know nor care about My Immortal, but if Sarah wants, I can prove I'm not him, that I'm from the states, that I've always lived here, and that I'm part of internet culture. I can even confirm that some people had their own alternate accounts to help Toby, so as to post when he posted, to make it seem like there were others active.
I am (as far as I am aware) only a part of two weird internet trends; Toby and Final Fantasy House. If I'm going to offer to talk about one, it's going to be Toby, because the Final Fantasy House stuff makes me consider vomiting tbh.

I've always been convinced that the author of My Immortal was a child and wrote it in earnest. Not a young teen, a child, in the range of 8-12. Hear me out, I think people usually assume the author was at least teenaged because of the mature content, the sex and swearing, but if you read it assuming the author was sincere, it kinda seems like she didn't really know what sex was? And didn't use the swears in a very natural way? Same with the goth subculture and satanist stuff, she seemed to only have a vague idea of what that stuff entailed. I think it's plenty plausible that a 10 year old would have added those things in to make herself seem more mature.
But now I'm kinda convinced it was Toby. Honestly given everything we've now learned about him it kinda checks out.
I think the one "TaEbony" kind of gives it away as a non-serious work, for a couple of reasons.
1) The real author's name would have to actually be Tara (or maybe "Taylor," but that kind of makes the cut off after "Ta" convenient).
2) She would've had to legitimately start typing her name, then delete part--but not all--of it, before typing the character's name. Search-and-replace would have replaced the whole thing, as would a person who found it while proof-reading.
That just seems like such an unlikely thing to have happen as a genuine accident. Someone above suggested that Toby could be friends with Tara (in real life, or online), and at some point she gave him access to the account and asked him to post the last chapters because she didn't want to be active in the community anymore, but wanted to get her story wrapped up. That would explain the way the gaps between releases changed. Of course, the assumption would be that Tara picked a bad person to give her login to. (Maybe she even changed it at some point, once she found out about Toby's shenanigans, locking him out of the account where he could attempt to vindicate himself.)
It's got to either be the above (I find the hacking really unlikely), or just plain Toby.
For me it would never convincingly be anything but parody after the reference to Sirius Black as Harry's "dogfather." But strange things happen I suppose.
Interesting idea but it has been debunked since people managed to find out what school she went to, and the age range for being it that school was definitely not for young kids since it was a prep school

@@nottheshirt483 all the posts regarding her school location and other specifics have been deleted since it got very close to dox her, but there are some leftovers that mention what happened on the subreddit r/myimmortaldrama. Toby was active for a while there after this video, and he showed that he got in contact through emails with Tara, which he accidentally released the IP address where she was sending the e-mails from. The IP address was what took people to find it was a prep school IP address and after that the mods stepped in deleting posts that revelead the location, name, etc, and Toby remade his post covering the IP.
Who's to say Toby ISN'T Tara? I mean, he turned out to be everyone else. I'm starting to wonder if I'm Toby. Maybe Toby is all of us?

I might add my own theory: So when it comes to hacking into an account, there are two possibilities: Either someone guesses the password (usually using a bot) or the list of stored passwords is leaked. I don't really know that much about fanfiction history, but I have seen multiple videos about My Immortal and I assume that a password leak around 2008 would be something to note, so that's ruled out (Correct me if I'm wrong). The thing about Toby is that 1. He never hacked any other accounts and 2. His activity doesn't suggest that it was something he did multiple times and 3. He doesn't seem like the kind of person who would bother with either a bot to guess the password or by guessing it manually. Now consider that the timeline for My Immortal's posting slowed down towards the end and ended with a bunch of chapters dropped all at once. With the evidence considered, I propose a likely scenario: Toby knew the real author of My Immortal personally. My Immortal's author got bored and decided to give both accounts to Toby not knowing the kind of nonsense he did on Fanfiction during his free time.

i had no idea that other people were out there pretending to be 50 people and starting their own communities of themselves. it honestly makes me wonder just how many of us are out there; a weird quirk of the combination of severe depression, processing issues, loneliness, and access to the internet that no other society could quite have created.
i used to do something similar; i created many accounts and they often fought with each other, were rude to each other, dated, etc. it was a maladaptive form of imaginary friends, but i also put it to less innocent uses, like vetting people who i was becoming friends with online under fake names and learning about them before they knew i was curious. it actually helped protect me from being abducted once, because i had, through my alt, learned that the person who was trying very hard to meet up with me in real life was lying about key details as their story didn't line up to both my accounts.
the late oughts were a very damaging time to be young, and a lot of our trauma came out in ways nobody had ever seen before, or noticed (i can imagine someone with a similar tendency publishing articles under various names, or op-eds, or whatever, but the ability to have multiple alter egos interacting with people you actually know either online or in real life and have them have no idea it's all you is a very modern thing.
i kinda want to meet this guy, just because i don't know anyone who did this to such a pathological extent as i did (and i did these things up until my early 20s, so i'm not surprised he hadn't quite grown out of it 2 years ago.) i'd be curious to find out if he's been diagnosed with similar mental illness, and if it's a trait of the specific intersection of certain disorders or just a trait some people have a tendency towards.

i did similar things to when i was pretty young. i was a lonely kid and my way of coping was to make a bunch of accounts,
create friends and interlink them to make a larger friendship group. i didn't have much self-confidence and in real life i struggled making friends because of my body dysmorphia and mental health. it's something i regret to this day as i never told any of the real people involved that i did it and i would have no way to now as i've lost contact with them or the details to any of my accounts from that era. i think that it's much more common than people expect.

Listening to this in the background was super surreal. Like, here I am, a dude named Tobie with a Christian upbringing, a propensity for lying, and a habit of making alts (Not to stir up drama with myself and definitely not 20+ accounts, jfc), and boom, I learn about some other eerily similar guy for an hour straight. I even used to have the weird messed up apostrophe, though that was only on my school Chromebook and because I never realized I accidentally changed the keyboard language setting until like 8th grade. It's like hearing about a weird parallel or alternate timeline version of myself.

This is interesting because if Tara did comment saying that Toby was impersonating her that directly contradicts the emails Toby and Tara exchanged, or supposedly exchanged. When Toby apologised for pretending to be her Tara says “I didn’t know you pretended to be me lol that’s weird” (or something similar.

Another comment alleges that Tara called him out way back when, for impersonating her, and a few have pointed out that he confessed previously to having lied to everyone. If all of this is true, he’s sought out a means to be as notorious as possible, by emulating Tara and copying her means of being famous on the site for bad fan fiction. It’s really kind of disturbing to see, since Ms. Scribe was attention seeking but still had enough sense to remove herself when caught out and carry on a normal life; Toby just seems to be going around in circles a thousand times over, a never ending spiral.
I looked a bit on that DeviantArt account (Todd-Gilesbie), and somebody asked if he can still log into Bloosyrists. The question was asked on December 12th, 2014. They got an answer only in April 20th, 2015. The question: "so can you still log into (...)", and the answer states the following: "Sadly, not anymore. It's been like nine years. I can't even log into Midnitegoff anymore. I know it sucks but I don't really care anymore," which makes the date he last logged into Bloosyrists somewhere in early 2006, but still he confessed in 2011, another thing happened in 2009 and he kept mentioning 2008.
It's clear it wasn't him behind My Immortal due to these inconsistencies.
On the topic of Raven, he got another question. "Was the girl 'Raven' that helped co-write MI a real person?"
Answered, "Raven was bad up sadly. Was surprised to see her stories stayed on FFN for so long." AND I CAN'T GET WHAT "BAD UP" MEANS! Made up, maybe?
In 2013 where was a question with "Are you actually back on?"
"Somewhat yeah, I'm not going to make a grand announcement or something, but yeah, I'm back."
Still, we've heard nothing related to MI in 2013 from Todd.

Out of curiosity, I looked up Tara fanfiction and got no useful results. Then, Tara Willow fanfiction appeared as a suggested search. Given that Willow is a character in My Immortal, it looks plausible. I found out it is something from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in fact. Do you think she might have any connection to that fandom, too, given these names? It seems like something someone like Tara Gilesbie would be into. Just a theory.
