f you are looking to take your tennis game to the next level in 2023 you need to watch this video.
I find that most tennis players get stuck at the 3.5 level.
Most people who pick up the game and have a passion for it get up to the 3.5 level with 3 to 5 years but then something weird happens.
They get stuck year after year at 3.5 and can't seem to break through to the 4.0 level and beyond.
Why is that?
I reveal all the growth hack secrets inside this tennis instruction video
Enjoy

I use the big flat Backhand Slice as a Return of Serve for dealing with serves into the Backhand even if the serve is coming short and wide. if I have got the time to do a full slice, but if I don't have time then I shorten the swing on contact but just like the buggy whip forehand, after contact I let the racquet carry on over the shoulder to take the tension off after doing the drive. For I slice the ball all across the body. It depends what type of slice I want to do, the normal slice I will just stop the racquet out to the side but the groundstroke slice i just let my racquet flip over the ball and finish by the side of the head with the racquet.
So I got options whether to buggy whip the slice or just skim it back over the net.
I love how you call out what typically you see at the 3.0 and 3.5 level. I see this all the time and it is maddening that these girls just keep on doing it and the pros at my club don’t call it out.
You have no idea how good it feels to see a lefty showing these things. Since most instructors are right handed, I'm used to flipping everything they do, but seeing a lefty do it makes it even easier to follow!
It’s actually nice to have a Lefty coach in real life (or should I say opposite dominant hand coach) because when they demo stuff across the net, it’s naturally an mirror image and I felt that’s easier to copy
Some online lefty coaches flip their videos to make it better for righties.
I don’t usually comment in YT videos, but this one compelled me to. I think I have never seen such crisp and to the point video for the transition. Thank you Peter for the tips!
Great video. I think the little white dog is sad because he reeeally wants to chase (and chew) one of those nice green balls!
Nice video Pete! Great explanation! Keep them coming!
Excellent tips and all of it makes complete sense Thankyou
Awesome video with great tips! Thank you.❤❤❤
Directly join and start playing 4.0 usta leagues. Eventually you get better by finding a way to win them. Once you have few wins in 4.0, you may see you automatically improved you game. Putting you against the better players are the way to get improved.
Love the coaching! I have gotten a lot of tips from this video.
Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Good tips and dude’s funny too! I enjoy this video a lot😂
One thing I see some 5.0 players at my club practice is the ultimate rally ball. They are great at hitting everything within a foot of the baseline.
Great vid, Pete. Your the best!
thanks Steve
Thank you!
Happy new year Pete. Saw one of your videos on the TV at O'Hare waiting on my flight.
awesome!
Great vid. Really highlights the things I m missing. I am vaporizing that ball with my forehand backhand then missing every single short ball known to man. Gonna keep working on that.
Diffficult low short balls are easy to deal with. You don't slow down on these balls. But you move all through them.
Important doubles volley tactic is to direct your shot at the feet of your opponents at the net. Make them have to hit up which will allow you to take their return above net level and control the point. It’s essential to close in when you see that they have to hit up because it increases your options. It’s like moving towards the hoop in basketball to grab a rebound. If you want to win you got to move in.
Nice video. I would add : slice, drop shot, moon ball in defense and passing shot.
Great video
I’ve got three of these but need to add return and mid court top spin ( have the slice )
The rally ball was huge for me last summer helped me reset points and re establish control
A sixth one I might add is embrace defense I won so many points I had no business winning by scrambling around the court pushing almost winners back then once stable I would reset with a rally ball often after this the opponent would make a mistake as they were deflated or I’d attack
Thank you for this channel, I am a lefty and find it a bit challenging to learn from right-handed videos. CZcams is flooded with them, while there is so little for left-handed.
U are welcome
Oh my poor baby! 🙂
Excepting 1997, I’ve been stuck at 4.0 for 28 years.
That slice or kick serve is so important. Even some slow kicks can make people uncomfortable.
Great tips Peter! I’m leveling up to 4.0 this year. Been working hard for past few years and am ready to do this. Thank you! 👊🙂
"you're only as good as your second serve."

Just saw your comment on olive vs Adam, I guess we watch the same content
@@mericusta1988 you have good taste!
@crunch time coaching is there a how to get from 4.0 to 4.5 video?
Great tips! I’ve only played for 1.5 years and I have no clue what level I am. However, I can hit flat, slice, and kick serves. So maybe I’m 3.5? You nailed me when you said rec players like to smash short balls. I do it all the time and frequently they go way out of bounds…LOL…field goal!
Good stuff in this video if you have time to work on them, Or, you could just make fewer errors. Easiest way to move up at any level.
Do you consciously pronate the same amount on the slice, kick, flat serve? Or is there one you do more pronation on or consciously focus on?
-MN
If you are training a stroke, it may make sense to focus of something like pronation. When you take it to the court for competition I think it’s important to have a clear mind and not be focusing on what you need to accomplish from a technical standpoint. I play my best tennis when my mind is free. Strategy before a point can be a thought process, but I think you hamper yourself by thinking too much about anything during the point or match.
Awesome! I'm a lefty and can see the helpful tips. Thanks!
Amazing video Pete !
Simple but very explained.
I love your Bido (Bidu) ?
B2
Jack Sock needs to take some private lessons from you! Sock is a true 3.5 now!
not bad. maybe a little more emphasis on how to hit forcing shots against 3.5 backboards would be good.
What are the narrower lines on the court?
They're for teaching kids using a smaller court size.
Decades! : )
I can do all of these guess I’m underestimating myself
I just got bumped up to 4.0 for the winter USTA leagues. Wel see how it goes I guess 😮😂😅
great job
A 3.75 dynamic rating is technically a 4.0, but I'm guessing that's besides the point!
Those mid court shots are sooo frustrating. Definitely slicing the ball and attempting to be more precise is the way to go. Otherwise most recreational players are going to smash it out of bounds.
you are funny
Just saw an Andy Murray overhead and thought of this question. Club players often smash the overhead past the baseline, would you recommend, like on the serve, closing the racquet head with a minor grip adjustment?
Birthday hat guy says you should use a forehand grip for the volley... I called bullish.t on that... we are no longer friends.
I do use the big flat Backhand Slice as a Return of Serve for dealing with fast serves to the Backhand.
why is it that all these online tennis coaches waste SO MUCH TIME JUST TALKING instead of showing the skill???? I am up to 5 minutes into this video and I am still to see how is done.....
His stepping up a bit wrong
good video but why does every tennis coach take so long to explain everything LMAO this could have been 3 minutes long. either way i like tennis on YT but yea such long videos
you start making videos and let's see how you do
@@PeterFreemantennis what a rude response lol i'm just giving some feedback. i hear criticism in my profession too...some of it is stupid some of it is good. i didn't say you suck or your video sucked. i watched it...
Being an old high school and USTA Junior tennis coach I find it impossible to explain these 5 concepts in 3 minutes in a live presentation on court. Exactly how do you teach these concepts when you coach or teach? Do you demonstrate a concept or simply just give a verbal idea like hit spin serves, attack the second serve, hit with lots of net clearance, use the proper grip etc. Many players and students benefit from visual learning which requires that you demonstrate the shot or concepts. It does take time because teaching is leading students through a process. From my teaching experience he did a good job.
