    ------
    "I'm Going Down" is a song written and produced by Norman Whitfield, and performed by Rose Royce in 1976. It is from the film Car Wash and is featured on its soundtrack. In 1994, it was sung by Mary J. Blige.
    The Rose Royce (original) version received moderate success. It peaked at number seventy on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number ten on the R&B singles chart. In the film Car Wash, the song serves as a double entendre, as it complements the screen time of Maureen, a forlorn prostitute who desperately seeks a chance at true love with "Joe," even as she turns tricks.
    In 1994, American R&B singer artist Mary J. Blige covered "I'm Going Down", titled "I'm Goin' Down", for her second studio album My Life (1994). Her version was produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs and Chucky Thompson, featuring co-production from "Prince" Charles Alexander and Mark "Led" Ledford, and contains portions of "The What" (1994) by American rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Method Man. Released as the album's second single, Blige's version peaked at number thirteen on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number twenty-two on the US Billboard Hot 100. In mid-1995, Blige released a remix featuring Mr. Cheeks of The Lost Boyz. "I'm Going Down" is frequently performed at many of Blige's concerts and as well as live sets. - Wikipedia

    This is tough for me... Rose Royce is the original and was released in one of the most prolific decades for R&B/Soul music. On the other hand I feel like Mary doesn't get enough respect because at the time she was part of the newer generation. A lot people don't like to give the flowers to the newer acts just cause they're newer. I'm leaning towards Mary...I resonant more with her story and what she was going through at the time. She has a more rawer Bluesy delivery. Mary should been a Blues singer anyway. People tend to associate it with Mary now especially if you didn't know Rose Royce song it first. Gwen sang it so hauntingly beautifully.. I feel like her version is lighter like a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend. While Mary's is very heavy emotionally. It's like I can sense the whole world falling on her...She was actually depressed during the recording of this album.

  • @rharris4473
    @rharris4473 Před 2 lety +7

    Voice to voice, Mary Wins. Mary's voice owns the track and presents a more complicated emotive experience. Mary blends sadness and anger connecting to a broad audience who can see their own complex self in her voice. The voice with Rose Royce often gets drowned out by the band and only expresses sadness and desperation, void of her own power and reaction to the situation. Mary J. Blige took the original a few steps further, as a cover should. Very similar music, essentially the same lyrics, yet Mary still made it hers. And its not just the voice alone, but how Mary emphasizes certain notes, sharply cuts off other notes, and ends the whole song with a riff that leaves you hanging. Many who have been in this situation feel the same way; what do you do; how will this be resolved; or realizing that you simply have to focus on something else in your life, so you tuck away those feelings and move on. Even when you listen to both, Mary's still stands out. If you are going to hand it over to the original, simply because it was the original, it defeats the purpose of this entire exercise.

    Spoiler alert: I’m not a Mary J fan, so you know I’m going Rose Royce on mines. I dig me some RR anyway, and I love the sound of organic pre-“synth driven” R&B…audio driven through an analog console and tracked on an actual tape…a warmth difficult to duplicate on a digital medium even with real instruments being played (like in Mary’s cover). And the vocals, in my ears, don’t sound equally soulful and heartfelt. I can’t look at the scene in Car Wash and put Mary’s version behind it and feel the same emotion. Sorry. Caint. So yeah - ROSE ROYCE!!!
