- Today we're going back to 2008 to count the most building dense map I have ever counted. I do not understate it when I say that this new york city made in china has brought me the most challenges ever whilst trying to film a video. It's just one grade above anything I have done before in terms of time it took to make.
So I really hope you enjoy!

At 101,714 peeps on a 16.14 km2 map, that means Liberty City has a density of about 6,301 per km2. About half as much as NYC (11,313.81 per km2), a bit above Boston (5,396 per km2) and about the same as Mexico City (6,000 per km2).
Had Liberty City been as dense as the real thing tho, there'd be 182,604 peeps living in it, so I'd say Rockstar did a pretty good job!
Liberty city being divided into 3 main parts with no countryside and no wilderness but only buildings, suburbs, and parks
Los santos being 1 huge island, a city being half the size of the map, and 2 other small cities, however there is mostly mountains, countryside, wilderness, and desert

Rockstar should give this legend GTA 6 early so you can count how many people GTA 6 should have.

@@paco680 Do you think that we will seriously have a map that is 10x as densely populated as gta 4? Imo it will be somewhere between 200-300k, but they may do something like los santos which will mean lower population.

Idk why but I’ve always thought that the GTA IV map was intentionaly made so depresing so it can match better with the story.
i always saw it as depressing in certain ways in certain parts. like Acter being depressing for being 100% industries, Algonquin for being so commercialised, broker being just generally shit and having bad weather, but certain places actually have the potential for nice weather which can completely change the colours of the map and make it so much less depressing, though to be fair it’s mostly alderney that does that lmao
Also weather tho, it’s not as sunny and bright as Los Santos n LA. They wearing jackets at times too, so maybe it’s around late fall in GTA 4 tbh. That’s how it is in colder states, you get cloudy days for days
@@SuperBabyMario0C there is also an animation for steam at the mouth of the characters and npcs when they breath. This can also sugest a cold weather

great work but my only problem is, alderney is supposed to be based on New Jersey rather than NYC, and is referenced as being (in) another state entirely, so the NYC people per household data potentially wouldn’t apply
also, not sure if you did, but it would have likely given a much lower and more accurate population if you did every in-game borough based on the people per household of the borough it’s based off
I hate that it'll be 10-12 years before we visit Liberty city again. I'm a new yorker and I would love to see LC again. But seeing this, this helps assauge that longing.
Probably be 14-15 more years until LC is back seeing that gta 6 will be released on 2025

Way longer gta 6 is 2 more years I assume there probably gonna do another city for gta 7 (maybe san fierro or las venturas or maybe something different) It might not even come back.

If I remember correctly the dev did said about GTAVI have Live Service part isn’t it.
Maybe that’s how they expanded the game and add new map like Los Santos or Liberty City in the game.
But besides GTA, there are many other games that are set in New York City.
Great vid! I tried this years ago and came up with 50-75k with 60-65k being what I thought was the sweet spot. I think your counting is much more accurate. I started swagging it in the really dense areas, counting number of buildings per block, average number of floors.
I love how imperfect the roads are in GTA iv, they are tiny and fun to speed on

The people that live in it are so diverse too. It's so interesting seeing different races, ethnics and cultures. It's always great to listen to different accents from all over the map. When I heard some guy yell "You stupid malaka" i searched if I could find more Greek people in the game. It seems hotdog venders and taxi drivers are the most common from my searching.
Yeah I never played the game before (was like 2 when te game came out) and I was shockt how good everything was designed.
as someone who lives in an American® City™ IRL, i can tell you firsthand - and this definitely won’t help your plight in counting the population level or GTA games - that quite a lot of skyscrapers that look like purely office buildings are not purely office buildings. a significant number of them are either purely residential, usually condos but sometimes apartments, or mixed use with some combination of office space, residential space, and / or a hotel taking up different segments of the building.

In the next version of LC, it would be good to see the main island, be as big and dense as the real Manhattan. But I would love to see them really double down on the detail. Have all the neighbourhoods feel distinctive.
i feel like they already made the neighbourhoods distinct. i can almost always tell which area i’m in just by looking at it
@@Sqk. No not really, and I mean Manhattan, as in GTA 4 their version of Manhattan was very condense and generic. I don't mean the other boroughs in the game. Like in real world Manhattan, there is a difference between Soho and the West Village that I want to see captured in a GTA game.
@@mickanvonfootscraymarket5520 i think they likely did that because it represents thr vibe of the game. just like how tlad and tbogt have different lighting depending on their themes, for niko Liberty City is a very strange place and especially in the most busy areas packed with skyscrapers it must seem to all blur together, but that’s just my opinion. it could also be they wanted to represent a specific area of manhattan or didn’t have the space and/or time to fully flesh it out. i do agree though, a truly expansive LC with a much bigger map, and countryside like the scrapped upstate area for IV, would be great

These videos are awesome. Would be cool if you also did gta 3, Vice city and San Andreas. Vice city atleast might be a bit easier as its much smaller.
Bohan was the greatest for multiplayer games of TDM/DM/Turf War, it had the perfect size and layout.

Hey, I love your population vids! Ever considered doing a population vid for an open world medieval game like Witcher 3 or Kingdom Come Deliverance? KCD would actually be simpler than a GTA, as the game's area is small and the buildings on the map are displayed very clearly.

I know doing this would be quite difficult considering the state of it in the games, but would it be possible for you to count the population of one of the fallout games? Of course assuming that when you find a building the population is counted based off of what it would have been before the war.
honestly would be difficult because buildings are uninhabited or whether you count characters such as raiders and such. estimated prewar population would be impossible dissapointingly. quite a large amount of buildings are leveled and its hard to grasp when your looking at a building torn in half.
It’s pretty crazy how much bigger in terms of population Liberty city is compared to Los Santos despite being a smaller map. In fact compared to the the real life ratio between New York and Los Angeles of about 2 to 1, it’s substantially higher than it should be.

I just appreciate the fact GTA 4 is getting its recognition. It was my first GTA game and my introduction into the series when i was 18. Since then I've played the others and i see they are all great in their aspects but barring being bias i say GTA 4 was the best in the series with how alive the city felt and "Niko lets go bowling". San Andreas is my second favorite but out of them all i find myself replaying GTA 4 and the DLC stories the most. GTA 4 is my personal favorite

5:11 You drew the border between Dukes and Broker wrong. The border isn’t along that highway, Broker still goes a bit north past that highway on the west side. Not that it matters for the total calculation, but still.
