  • While visiting the Sugar Sand Festival in Clearwater Beach, Florida, I stopped by Banana Records to see their collection of vintage audio gear of speakers, receivers, amps, preamps and turntables.

That was one of the BEST videos EVER. Sand and audio masterpieces. Ariston was a turntable that was very respected for sound quality. If your friend had an Oracle Delphi turntable and you had an Ariston, you would probably envy the way his high frequencies sounded and he might envy your bass range reproduction. You could switch between 3 different phono cartridges by having 3 tonearms on that turntable. Micro Seiki also made a turntable with mountings for 3 different tonearms/cartridges. VTL is David Manley's Vacuum Tube Logic amplifier company. They are higher end than Accuphase and one year last decade, they were the toast of the town in The Absolute Sound, as they more than hinted that the VTL $35,000 preamp/amp combination was the new state of the art. The year before I think it was Ayon equipment from Germany on the kings throne and before that it was Halcro amps from New Zealand.
David Manley of VTL once had a spot they ran on National Public Radio where he said that transistor amps distort the high frequencies whereas tube amps do not. I think they have built nothing but tube equipment since around the 1980s or 1990s. Fun seeing the Dahlquists. You often see the later 1980s top of the line model, the DQ 30 or 30i on ebay. There's always a local pick up only. A guy in one of the forums claimed to have driven from D.C. to Minnesota for a pair.

I KNEW you were going to fill in the blanks on those items I could not identify. I could have done some research before making the video, but that would have been corny, much better when those familiar with their history chime in on things. Thanks for adding to the conversation, as always.

Those artist were simply amazing. The level of detail they are able to get in their sculpture is incredible. We have wanted to go to that event for several years now, just happened to include some audio related content.

Enjoyed both the sand sculptures and the tour Scott. You're right, that McIntosh MC2300 is indestructible as the Grateful Dead used 48 of them to power their "Wall of Sound" while touring in the 70's. They bridged them for 600 Watts each. Beast of an amp.

Although it was sad to see how dirty most the equipment was in that shop, as well as poorly stored, it seems you could pick up some pretty good deals from some the tags I saw. Obviously you'd need to have everything checked over & cleaned really well in the end, but I'm sure there are some bargains to be found in there. As you said though, it's a shame it's not maintained better. There are many treasures in there just crying for some TLC.

I loved the sand sculptures and loved the tour. I was surprised how little they were asking for that Sansui Tuner. The models with the wide/narrow IF band are much sought after by FM DXers. They didn't have as nice of gear as yours though.

The turntable is an Ariston RD-80 from the 1980s.
Suspended sub-chassis design with high-end looks for not much money. Not the greatest sounding disc spinner, however it was a conversation piece back then.

I haven't watched all your videos Scott, but of the ones I've seen, you never mentioned if you like lps or cds better. What is the system you listen to most often? With a lot of us collectors it's like musical chairs with our electronics and speakers. Listening through one thing for one period of time and then something else for another period of time. I have always been an analog guy but within recent years I've come to like digital a lot. I had a truly great winter making improvements to my digital playback system; tweaks not upgrades. I came to realize that even once my digital playback started sounding really analog like, there was still something in that sound I liked, that I did not like. It was glare. When you listen to lps or tape there is no glare. It's totally free of it. It's there with digital. I figured out how to decrease it greatly. That was the final thing it needed for me. I now like my cds
as well for sound as my lps. Pro rating it a little for no ticks and pops and inner groove distortion; and digital wins for me. I have a Denon integrated that has selection for cd and DAT, (Digital Audio Tape). Denon (and others I suppose) must have thought that medium was going to catch on. All the bad things that certain people think about cds, is not the cds but their players. If they listened to cd player that is truly first rate, I wonder how bad they would be looking for records; if at all.
Before I improved my digital playback, except for reel to reel, I entertained the idea of cassettes being the most perfect medium for sound quality. The sound is totally analog and I liked its timbre and tonality better than my cd player back then. Cassettes lack dynamics a bit, but to me that's not as important as beautiful timbre; I was still getting something phony sounding with my cd player. There was a touch of veiling and lack of palpable presence compared to lps, but no ticks or pops and you didn't have to get up after side one to flip it; there was auto reverse. A cassette deck like the better Nakamichs seriously narrow the sound quality gap between lp and cassette. So all things considered I wondered if cassette wasn't the medium of paradise. Then I started improving my digital in leaps and bounds, and now it sounds about as analog as analog, but without the noise and other problems; and yes, it has left cassettes behind with it's unbelievable resolution and purity of sound. I still like cassettes. If you have a good enough cassette deck, you are not cheated out of as much sound quality as most people would think. My future is digital playback for the most part; but I will always keep and cherish my lps and tapes too.

Prices are crazy high for audio gear in this bad condition. Seems to be a good time until now to live in Switzerland to buy this stuff in mint condition for waaaay less money.

$2,450 for an E202 that is not serviced is quite expensive. A gent in College Station sells them refurbished for less.

Awesome video. I would really like to visit that store. However it would be painful to see something you want but can't buy. They have some cool stuff though. What did you think about their prices? And did you buy anything?

    • @stereoniche
      @stereoniche  Před rokem

I did not buy anything. The one item of interest I mentioned in the video, the Toshiba preamp, I wanted to consider, but because it was not pre-priced, I could not even make an offer. I did think many things were over priced for their condition, however, would they negotiate? I was not able to find out. Maybe some others that have bought from there can chime in on their experience.

The way he works it is if you buy a piece for the listed price and for any reason you get it home and it no works he’ll take it back 100% refund. You can dicker on price but the it’s your. I picked up a nice SAE intagrated for $25 cause the previous buyer told him it had issues with the. Left channel. For 25bucks I took a chance. All it was was dirty pots, after a good cleaning it works fine. I ended up bypassing the preamp section and just use the amp , very nice transparent sounding , can’t beet the price!!

Beautiful sculptures indeed, not so much the warehouse. In my opinion they don't give a damm about the good stuff, I suppose they buy in big amounts and mix everything without any care. You are very polite about the matter but I see how you love vintage audio and I bet you my Missions against your AU2000 that you almost had a stroke when you saw the disaster.

I owned that open faced Pioneer CT F950 or maybe the next version. The trouble I had with it was playing with all the features. You could set a section of tape to play-rewind-play. That put a big load on the electro magnetic auto play rewind play to lower and raise the heads. It kept breaking. If I had just used like any other deck, I'm sure it would have been fine.

Teenage in me is drooling heavily, however,
Todays class-D (as smooth as Class-A) with time aligned DSP Crossovers from pure digital sources over write the rules, trump everything.
106db efficient fully horn loaded speakers systems based on designes from the past, out shine everything when they are being DSP driven.
even direct radiating large low excursion cones from past designs, have lower non-linear distortion VS todays modern pathetic and small 6.5" excuses for speakers that sell for tens of thousands, even if they are exotic materials, IT IS PHYSICS, too bad air compresses.
