Robb Flynn states:
“I feel like metal could really infiltrate the mainstream with this album. And it needs to... now more than ever. A lot of consideration went into making these songs more identifiable to a wider audience. Simplifying ideas, simplifying hooks, really concentrating on story-telling as opposed to ‘brutal poetry’ or whatever. And while I’d love to say it was all some grand plan, there was no ‘plan’” Flynn adds laughing. “You never know where you’re going to end up whenever you start writing a record... you just write... but I tell ya what... we ended up with a landmark here.
Whenever you finish an album, you always feel proud, but this time... we’ve got something really special. We can feel it. We know it. 'Catharsis’ could really elevate our genre."
Catharsis was produced by Robb Flynn and recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Zack Ohren (FALLUJAH, ALL SHALL PERISH) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, CA. It seems, for some Machine Head have to invent nothing short of a whole new wheel, and it has to be done flawlessly. It's no surprise to me that the band can't meet those expectations.
For me, “Beyond the Pale” is absolutely solid (it still keeps growing) and I'm excited to listen to their other 14 new tracks. And I think that's all Machine Head can ask for.

I just went and listened to the Strapping Young Lad's song Love, and I've never heard that (or this Machine Head song either) and man the entry riff is identical minus a little change at the end. IT even sounds like it's in the same tuning...C# standard? Reagardless, still sounds like it came off The Blackening album, which is still my favorite, and I'll take it. //\/8/\\

My only problem with it is that we have to wait until January for the album to drop GODDAMN IT 😭
Late January at that! But that'll be here before you know it. I'm sure at least a few more songs will drop before the release date. Hell, we'll be able to download it a month before it drops most likely, but I'll be patient and wait to buy it when it officially is released. I think this album will be solid. I like all of their albums, though obviously some are better than others.

Robb said he likes to think of machine head albums kind of like epic feature films, I can see what he means when each album has quite a distinctive sound and feel to it. They never disappoint, always put everything into the music.

I legit thought this was SYL's 'Love' for a sec. Like, its uncomfortable how much the main riff sounds similar. I can normally look past something like this but it just feels too similar. Like how Annihilator's 'Snap' sounds a lot like Rammstein's 'ich tu dir weh'. The rest of the song is ok but feels like some of the riffs were leftovers from a better song.

Except, Metallica stole The Four Horseman riff from Mustaine. He wrote it. After he left the band, they should've not used any of his original music; but they did. They also (admittedly) copied Sweet Home Alabama chord progression for the middle section of The Four Horseman. So yeah, that song is like a ripp off within a rip off, yet it's one of Metallica's most popular gems.
difference is both with mechanix and four horsemen both have writting credits so no foul play, i dont see Machine Head cropping up in the writting credits for Love do you?
Renegade, difference is that Dave Mustaine was in the band at one point and he wrote that music. So he should get credit by default. This case is a coincidence, whether you want to believe it or not. Robb Flynn was not in Strapping Young Lad and never even was their fan to begin with. Even Devin Townsend recently said that he stole the chorus for "Love?" from another song.

I absolutely HATE when people say "if you're a true fan you'll enjoy whatever they produce". I adore Pantera but I can't stand their first four albums. I love Metallica but I don't like Load, ReLoad, or St. Anger. I love Megadeth but don't like Risk or Super Collider. You can like or even love a band without liking whatever they do.

I find it funny that Robb Flynn gave Avenged Sevenfold shit for Hail to the King ripping off other bands. Yet, here his band ripping off Strapping Young Lad's Love? Hypocrisy at it's finest.

what specific song from Machine Head? I don't hear anything from the AS song. People say it sounds like Strapping Young Lad's "Love?" but hearing both back to back, "Beyond the Pale" has more and different notes but they both have that string bend at the end of the passage which is why people pick up on this... People are also hating on MH already because of last year's events which is silly and are placing that reaction onto the song instead of separating the song as its own entity.
Yeah. Kind of like that video where he condemns Phil Anselmo for shouting "white power" as a joke but he has no problem repeatedly using the N word as a quote in the same video.

I Wear Clothes, If I remember correctly, Robb said that there is a some new different stuff on the album. Considering that a lot of people were upset about "Is there anybody out there" being "a sellout" (I personally quite enjoyed that song) promoting this album with a good, heavy, conservative Machine Head song is actually a smart move in my opinion.

Looks like Rob Flynn thinks he is edgy as fuck and this new shit he is dropping is so artsy and will revolutionalize metal... yeah, give me a break, how about you start writing good songs again and cut the crap, huh ? Metal needs to become mainstream ? What has kept metal alive through all the copycat bands pondering to sales and "consumer satisfaction" all these years ? The underground. The art they are claiming here is exactly gone in a broader sense. And now MH themselves are pondering to the lowest common denominator with these kinds of statements. But I highly doubt it was intentionally done. It sure is similar. Dave McClain is part of the reason why I still listen to these guys. I love his style of drumming.
