- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Neat little rocks there, Rob.
I don't believe everything you're calling prehnite is actually prehnite though; a couple of those look like cryptocrystalline quartz coloured by something else green. As always, would have to examine in person to be sure.
Well, shoot. Just when I think I'm figuring things out, you come along and humble me again. I do appreciate the education though, don't stop!
Yes, a Sunday morning in Ohio watching Michigan rocks with a hot cup of coffee with a happy grandbaby and the sound of my 3 tumblers in the background
Sounds like a nice morning.
So beautiful! I love how you show the beaches where you found them too. I can't wait until spring.
I keep trying to make these a little more interesting.
I'm back just in time. Love Rocks in a Box. Awesome rocks again. That banded iron shines up nice. Thanks for sharing. Was fun to watch. Great video
Yep, banded iron usually turns out pretty nice.
Rocks in a box is back!!! Let’s gooo!
I know, it's been awhile. Sorry about that.
You sold me on the jasper w/layers, very dark jasper, & the 1st rock "maggot". Epidote came out nice. Nice collection. Hope you & your family are well. Prayers for all as I know you all are getting rough winter storms.
We haven't had a rough winter storm all winter. The current storm is south of us. I wish we'd get a good storm so there'd be enough snow to go cross country skiing. I appreciate the prayers though. Just pray for southern Michigan this time.
I always enjoy Rocks in a Box. I really like the side by side comparison. And the snipit of where they were found was cool too. We’ve been having a nasty winter storm all afternoon and evening. Should be interesting in the morning !
I keep trying to improve these videos. They started out as something that took 15 minutes to make and are now up to a couple days work for one like this.
You must be in Indiana. The storm is south of us. Bummer.
Yahoo Rocks in a Box! The green one with stripes and different shades of green is beautiful. I think they are all interesting. Thanks, Rob!
You're welcome!
It's always a good day when Rob posts a video. Love the transformations! Beautiful rocks, all of them!
I'm glad my little videos make you heavy, Chelsea.
Love the before and after videos-without showcasing the before, we wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate the after! The personal process of choosing a specimen, along with time & effort spent on transforming it-as well as adding some education about each piece, even if it’s a guesstimate…so very helpful! I also appreciate your humbleness when someone may know a little more on a particular piece!
Ever-evolving knowledge when it comes to this hobby!! Great work, Rob!
I'm never afraid to admit when I don't know something. There's no point in trying to fake it. I appreciate when someone corrects mistakes I make because then I get to learn too.
Hey there. Fellow Michigander from Port Huron. Just got in from shoveling the first round of snow , wet and heavy!!!! Near white out conditions now, going to be busy tomorrow morning. But anyway, it was comforting to watch your video. I love all the different Jaspers you tumbled. They look great. Thanks for sharing.
I'm jealous. I bought cross country skis this year and we haven't had snow for me to use them as much as I was hoping to. There were some bare patches when I was out on Wednesday and I decided to just go for a walk today. We could use a good storm up here.
Part1. We are so lucky!
Only two parts made so far but I just took before pictures of a bunch of other Michigan rocks for more.
Hi Rob, Always enjoy the "rocks in a box". Some really pretty rocks. Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!
Wow! Its amazing how different they look polished! Beautiful! 😊
That's exactly why I do this. I just love seeing that transformation.
Wow, a lot of beautiful crystal stones 😍
I enjoy the before after tumbling . Amazing how aplain rock can be gorgeous with a little shine. Thank you
Those pictures take forever and a day to take, but I enjoy seeing that transformation too.
I have a ton of these rocks you've shown here in Minnesota. Thanks brother! My tumblers, all 3 of them, night and day lol. Thank you sir.
You should have similar stuff, plus better agates.
@@MichiganRocks we do have some phenomenal agates, I've Shared all I've found with my subs, but to be honest, the interst isn't the same say between others and myself, I fell in love with these stones and hobbies at 39 yrs old, I got sober from Drugs and alcohol many years ago, I started a recovery channel czcams.com/channels/bsBgSDEclnNgUDrBfRcZnQ.html, thats has all the content and subscribers, but the hobbies I've found while in sobriety are just as important as my faith in God to keep me sober to do these activities, I'm sorry to tell you all this, I just have fallen in love with these stones, finding them, refining them, my kids are involved, my wife wants to be involved, it's a miracle, thanks for showing us small guys how to do all this stuff and thanks for taking rhe immense amount of time to make content for us, I get the struggle. Thank you sir. I'm Jesse. Both my channels are subbed to your channel, so you'll see me come on through both channels. Ill.try to get some of my subs to come over and check this out, I only have 20 subscribers, my other channels has thousands and thousand+ videos, but it's strictly about recovery and the faith that gets us through, thus other channel I'm trying to build around the hobbies we can do sober. I started with Rocks, I got a motorcycle, I love to fish, hunt, I'm gonna do it all on the recovery Rocks channel. LOVE YOUR work.
That's awesome, Jesse! What a great story. I just watched a couple videos on your rock channel and I love your enthusiasm. I think it's awesome that you're making a channel that will hopefully help people see that there are some great activities do to that are better than drugs. I'm so happy for your family that you're sober. I just said a little prayer for you. God is great!
Yay, more rocks in a box!!! I love these videos. Beautiful rocks! My husband always says if it's green, pick it up. Most everyone likes green rocks.
I'm sure guilty of picking up green rocks. I don't know what it is about them.
Love the side by side b4 & after comparison.
I like those too. It's fun to see the transformation.
I always learn something watching your videos. Your filming is top notch too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Rob.
You're welcome!
Love the "Rocks in a Box" videos, and especially this one with the side by side pictures. The UP is one of my go to places but more in the western part from the Keweenaw to the Porkies.
I'm heading that way in the spring. Can you recommend a good beach or two? Right now I have Little Girls Point and Black River Harbor on my list as possibilities. I'll probably only have time to hit one or two beaches, so I'd like to make it a good one.
@@MichiganRocksA couple other places worth checking are Agate Beach (Stanton Park) and Santa Monica Beach. Sadly, much of that stretch is either hard to reach, private, or protected.
What do you mean by "protected"? Is there a National Lakeshore there? I'll check out the places you mentioned. Thanks!
@@MichiganRocks Porcupine Mtns state park is along that stretch, and I vaguely remember a nature preserve somewhere along there as well. All of the places mentioned are good for agates and "odd" rocks.
It's legal to collect in state parks, at least all the ones I've been to.
🙋♀️❤ Awesome. Many of them look like painted landscapes. Others, abstracts. On and on. Nature is quite the artist. I always think there's a story being told.
That's one of the things I love about rocks, there's such a huge variety.
Awesome rocks. Absolutely love the jaspers. I love the dark reds.
Those rock are amazing! Seeing them before and after was really cool. 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yep, I like those too. I'd do more of that, but it takes forever. I mainly only do it for my Michigan finds.
Awesome bunch of beautiful and unique rocks! I think you did have some agates in there and even that last one looked to be an agate! I can't wait for part two!
Yep, I think there were some agates in there for sure.
Awesome! First stone was definitely an agate.
Yes, I think so too.
I am only 2 minutes in and I love this video the side by sides are so neat. I would love to see more of these.
There are some others that I've done like this. I'm waiting for the last few rocks to get done tumbling and I'll be making more of these from this past summer's rocks.
Always enjoy your Before and After videos....those Rocks in a Box just shine!
I'm glad you like them, because they take nearly forever to make.
@@MichiganRocks I know you invest a lot of time on them and that you are willing to do it as a hobby/job to share with us.
Very cool rocks
This rock is very good, very crystal, it's nice to be able to see beautiful rocks and this is special greetings 👍👍👍
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Awesome stuff Rob, love the Yooperlite, looks like a picture from space looking down at the cities lights!
This wasn't a great one, but fun that I recognized it in the daytime.
@@MichiganRocksIts look its really awesome, not too powerful but its got that looking down from space look.. very kewl!!
Great side by side comparisons…I need to start doing that.
I like them too. Be aware that it take a really long time to do, though.
Hi, Rob. I think I would name that rock at 4:44 a Harlequin rock. I really like the diamond-shapes created by the multi-color stripe patterns.
After looking up the definition of "harlequin", I agree. I knew there was a harlequin duck and also romance novels by that name, but neither of those seemed to fit.
I love these video's where you show the before and after.
Thanks. They take a ton of work to make, but I like seeing the before and after too.
They’re all beautiful! If you’ve never seen the rocks we have in Ohio then anything with color is fascinating.
You have some beautiful flint down there. I drove seven or eight hours to go get some once.
Uu,i love the stripey ones💕
Others are really beautiful too👍.cant wait part 2
Stripes are awesome.
So cool lines and swirls, love those
Hi Rob, Very nice stone, the green stripes is amazing, the grey too, all are nice ! great job and the pictures from the beaches with blue sky are fantastic, i cannot wait for spring , thanks
I'm ready for spring too. I added a new garden to the yard in the fall and I keep looking out at it. I planted a few ground covers and a couple of trees, but I'm excited to fill it in with more plants. Oh, and I'm excited to get out on the beach too.
Beautiful rocks as always. I really like the Jasper & banded Churt
Love the lake superior agates. They turned out great after the tumbler!
I don't usually tumble agates, but the ones that aren't obviously agates are tumble-worthy. I'm glad I tumbled these.
Great rocks. The format is satisfying also(before and after, side by side, and locations).
I put a lot of effort into the format, so it's nice to hear that you liked it.
Nice pretty rocks Rob!
Now I’m super excited!!! My wife and I are coming to the UP in may for an extended weekend. We love rocks . We have pretty nice ones here , most of the agates we find are half dollar to smaller sized and almost always yellow . A few reds but we love coming to the lake . Thanks for your time showing us these beauties Bud👍👍😁
Where is "here" and what kind of agates are you finding?
Tennessee, and kind? Most are really yellow with light yellow or sometimes reddish or brown colored bands. Some have like quartz on them . We don’t have a tumbler or cab machine. I’ve polished a few with a dremel. We have a couple of really small red ones. And I found one last weekend that has white and kinda blue with a nice quartz layer .If your on Facebook messenger I can send you a few photos, maybe you can inform me more about what we’re finding. If it wouldn’t be a problem.👍👍Thanks
I'm not very familiar with Tennessee agates, but I just found a video showing some. They're awesome. Here's the video: czcams.com/video/61K0X9fAszg/video.html
@@MichiganRocks I sent a couple pictures on messenger but I guess they went to the wrong place . Typed in Michigan rocks and got your picture but could have been a bogus site .thanks for the video
Could you send me a link to exactly where you sent the pictures? If someone is impersonating me, I'd like to know about it. This is my Instagram page: instagram.com/michiganrocksyoutube/
YaY another Rocks in a Box! Thanks Rob!
You're welcome!
Beautiful!!!
I like these! Especially the close-ups
A nice variety. They polished up great.
Very cool rocks! Always a great way to start a weekend day. Thanks!
You're welcome!
You had such a nice variety of rocks, really fun to watch!
There is a huge variety to choose from on Great Lakes beaches.
At 7:09 - looks like a panorama of the Grand Canyon (dark green is the river). My favorite.
I guess it does. Cool!
Incredible work brother
Thanks!
These are some of my favorite videos!
I'm glad you enjoy them.
Love the vibrant unikite. So nice.
That's one of my favorites. I have tumbled a lot of it over the years.
This helps me get a feel for what might tumble well. Thx
Yes, I think the before and after really help with that. It's not the same as just tumbling them yourself, but it's the next best thing.
It must take a lot of effort to put together a video like this. I do enjoy them - Thank you.
Hours and hours. Those before and after pictures take forever. I like seeing the change though, so it’s worth it.
I love the rocks in a box videos I missed them. Nice for finds I like the water works park!❤
Last summer was the first time I've been to Calumet Waterworks. I liked it too.
@@MichiganRocks Definitely a good place. It’s where my mother was born and lived until she was 16 years old. My parents took me there when when I was young. We looked for agates up there. I still use my dad’s old Thumblers tumbler to this day 😎
That whole area is just beautiful.
I'm fairly new to your channel, but I've watched a lot. I really enjoyed this video. I like the comparison shots.
I have a few others with before and after shots. I mostly only do that with rocks that I pick up myself in Michigan because it's really, really time consuming to do. I think most or all of the videos like that have similar thumbnails to this one, with a before and after picture of one rock.
I'm from Michigan, gotta try watching Dan Hurd prospecting ... love your channel
I do watch Dan Hurd from time to time. I started watching him several years ago.
This made my day thank you
You're welcome.
I've started an experiment with grit and tumbling with the 3 pound barrel im only using 2 tbl spoons of grit and only one of pre and polish and only a half cup of water and so far it's working. I will post my results on my channel
Let me know when you do. I'm planning a similar experiment.
Cool!!!
How amazing was the rock at 7:00 minutes? So cool. I enjoy seeing the transformation of rough to smooth and the intensity of color rock polishing can bring out on a rock! Thanks again for sharing!
You can get a pretty good idea of the color change that will occur by just wetting the rock. The fun thing about tumbling them is that they look wet even when dry after tumbling.
Great video can't wait to get to superior and look for Rock's, any idea about looking on the banks of a river, I live less than a half mile from the Wisconsin River 😀 thanks in advance!
I don't have any good rivers near me to hunt and I tend to just go to the beach when I'm in the U.P. I'm sure that banks on the right river could be great though.
@@MichiganRocks thanks for the info, just going to just go and see what I can find that suits me. 👍
@7:03 reminds me of green zebra jasper and dalmatian jasper mixed together.
Yeah, I guess it does a little bit. You'd think that a Dalmatian would chase a zebra though.
@@MichiganRocks I think that’s what was happening until the zebra tripped and the Dalmatian crashed in between some stripes lol
Ha ha!
Great Video! Thank you so much for sharing .. #YouRock
You're welcome!
There all pretty
I spray invisible fluorescent orange paint on the beach. Everyone finds Yupper lights!
Just kidding,
That would be funny though!
Great video as usual, what’s your recommendations for a uv light?
I don't really have a recommendation, since I have only used one kind. I have a Convoy S2 and I like it. I was just out Yooperlite hunting a couple weeks ago and ran into a guy with a Convoy C8 and it was significantly better. Both of these are fairly expensive, and I have often wondered how some of the cheaper ones compare. The really cheap ones don't work well at all. Here's an affiliate link to the one I have: kingsleynorth.com/convoy-s2-uv-led-flashlight.html?ref=robertabram1&
Imma buy a tumbler in 2 weeks from the UK. Hope it arrives...
Good luck!
Very nice polish on them. Just got a Gy roc vibratory tumbler. Do you have any suggestions for ceramic media to use in it? Thanks
I have bought ceramic media from both Kingsley North or the Rock Shed. They both sell two sizes of cylinders. I buy some of each and mix them 50/50. Links are in the description.
Just started tumbling and would like to see how you maintain your rock tumblers
I don't have a video on that, but it's mainly just oiling the ends of the shafts once every week or two. The other thing to watch is the "bearings" at the ends of the shafts. I'm not sure about all brands, but Lortone tumblers have little plastic bushings that they call bearings. I wore through my first ones and then the frame wore into the shafts, which I had to replace. It would have been much cheaper to replace the little plastic things. The other thing that you might have to do is tighten the belt as it wears and stretches.
Wow....some of them are just stunning.....do Yooperlites lose any shine when you tumble them??
No, not at all. I can't imagine that you would have missed a video, but just in case, here's one where I tumbled Yooperlites so you can see the before and after glow. czcams.com/video/5wiAY3vVFws/video.html
@@MichiganRocks I did see that...I liked it before. No brain, no pain!
Finally learned the name of the “Christmas rocks” my kids find on Lake Michigan… unakite!
I've heard them called that. Great rocks.
@@MichiganRocks you inspired us to go out to our spot in wi today. found an amazing chain coral and my son went nuts when he found a petosky stone too, much due to your show. We will try tumbling it. But we never find pudding stones with the red like you do… maybe they aren’t on the southern wi shore?
I think you're too far west for puddingstones. There're more common in Lake Huron that on the eastern side of Lake Michigan, in my experience.
Be careful tumbling that Petoskey Stone. They're very soft and you could lose a lot of it if you're not careful. They're very difficult to tumble well. I'd suggest hand sanding or partial tumbling and then hand sanding.

@@MichiganRocks thank you!
I've been following your stuff for a minute I used to do jewelry metal finishing but I've always been fascinated by rocks I just got my first tumbler wish me luck
PS.might ask questions ok?
Good luck, and I'll do my best to answer your questions.
Did you know that there is an app called rock identifier and you just take a photo of the rock in the app and it will tell you what type of rock it is. I love it.
I tried that once. I showed it three different rocks, it called them all the same thing and none of them were right. I don't think there's anyway possible for an app to do what it claims to do. You need to do more than look at many rocks to identify them. There are acid tests, hardness tests, and specific gravity tests that can't be done by a camera. Have fun with the app, but know that it has some major limitations.
It will get you close, but sadly it hasn't been perfected to the point it will definitively ID a rock/mineral. Neat idea though...
Fun rocks! For some reason a yooperlite guitar pick popped into my head😂 Do they tend to be solid enough to use for cabs?
My son in law cut some into shapes that I tumbled to make fridge magnets. They'd definitely be solid enough for cabs. I would probably not use them for guitar picks though. I like to use something really hard and solid like Montana agates for those.
@@MichiganRocks Good point on agates as a better option. Thanks for the response👍👍
The jaspers make up a high gloss
Yes, they're nice and hard and polish well.
I love these ❤✌️. That big one is great, I like those. Even bigger, I’d have to have some sort of cart instead of a bucket 🥵
About how much of the rock is lost in the tumble, approximately?
Edit: I used to comment as Amber Lynn but changed my moniker 😊
PEACE
A lot of names changed when CZcams introduced "handles". Thanks for letting me know who you used to be!
The amount of rock lost varies a lot, depending on the rock. By far the most grinding and mass loss happens in the first stage. Some of these rocks were already pretty smooth from rolling around in the lake, so they only spent one week in the first stage. Those rocks didn't lose much size at all. Other rocks were in there for a couple months while I tried to grind out large holes. Those rocks could easily be half the size that they started.
Great rocks! Lovely...but why don't you ever do bright Yellow or bright blue rocks? Bright colors period?...🤔
Bright yellow rocks and bright blue rocks are not something you find in Lake Superior very often. When I buy rocks I sometimes buy brighter colors. Here are some bright orange carnelians that I tumbled once: czcams.com/video/pQq_4_n4ZNI/video.html
I just put some blue lace agate in the tumbler this week. I'll be doing a video on those at some point. They're blue, but not a very bright blue. Maybe I'll buy some blue rocks to tumble next time I make an order from a rock shop.
@@MichiganRocks I love lace Agate! Looking forward to see that video & other future videos!
I have 69 other videos just like this one, where I show some rocks I've tumbled. Some are crazy lace. Did you catch the video where I tumbled a big chunk of crazy lace? czcams.com/video/bc-XRnSzWIc/video.html
😍😍😍
I was wondering if i can just polish pudding stones in a rotary tumbler? I want to leave them natural but have a shine
Yes, you can tumble them in a rotary tumbler. The matrix will always get little pits in it whether you do it in a rotary or vibratory tumbler, so expect that.
Great video. Are the Polly Plastics grits ok to use? The Rock Shed products look great but the shipping cost to where i live is almost the price of my order. Thanks.
Their first couple of grits are probably good. But after that, they sell 500 silicon carbide, which is where I switch to aluminum oxide. For polish, they sell 1200 aluminum oxide, but I use polish from either the Rock Shed or Kingsley North which is between 1 and 3 microns. That's around 8000 grit or finer.
Are you in the United States? If so, both Kingsley North and the Rock Shed will ship in flat rate boxes. Sometimes it doesn't show that on their websites. I alway leave a comment asking them to ship in whatever way is the cheapest. You can also buy more so that you don't have to order again for a long time. Larger quantities will usually save you shipping costs over the long run.
@@MichiganRocks thanks for the info. I am in the US. I will inquire about shipping. I do want to use the best pre polish and polish as i havent had the best results in these stages with what I first bought.
If you're in the U.S. then I'd definitely be buying from one of those places. I have been a customer of both for over ten years and have never been disappointed.
@@MichiganRocks thanks the Rock Shed found me a good price on shipping. So I know hopefully have a better prepolish and polish to get the shine im looking for. Do you use ceramics or plastics in the polish phase? I have plastics and my barrel is about 3/4 full with the rocks im ready to polish. Just wondering if I would need the fillers too?
I always use plastic or ceramic. I much prefer ceramic media, but other people like plastic. Both can give you good results.
Is Sam your son? I love you have close friends and family that enjoy rocks. I walk around alone.😊 im from Utah and have alot of lakes & rivers, mountains around me.
No, Sam lives across the road from me. I have known him for his whole life. My son used to do this stuff with me but he grew up and doesn't have time for it anymore, so I adopted Sam as my rock hunting partner.
I always love the grey banded chert. Good batch nice to see you had some variety. Have a great weekend sir.
Very cool rocks
