am i wrong or does having an axe or pickaxe prevent you from getting the achievement

You can have them as long as you never use them and do damage to something with them. You can see at 19:10 when I do /debug the only rock part is still true (not false) which means you would get the achievement.

@@joshuasoucie9488 on easy difficulty they really don't do much damage on day 0/1. Walking up in front of the guardian also reduces damage from the beam attack so if you have armor you can block all damage from it
