  • Harry Mortimer Celebration Concert | Available in 4K
    25th September 2022
    Conductor: Michael Fowles
    MC: Paul Hindmarsh
This concert marks the 120th year since the birth of Harry Mortimer as well as 30 years since his passing. The 'Mortimer' family were (and still are) the most famous name within the brass band community and made a significant impact on the history of the band. Harry Mortimer is probably the most 'well known' of the family, being a former Principal Cornet and Conductor as well as leading a 'dual' life balancing his work with Foden's as well as a busy Orchestral career.
Today's concert gives a narrated overview of Harry Mortimer's life (and the Mortimer family) with music associated with major points in his career.

I heard Harry Mortimer live in the Vara radio Studio in Hilversum in 1974. I used to go there as I loved theatre organs and they had one in one of their studio's. Harry however was playing in the large studio were the plan was to install in 1966 the former BBC ex Reginald Foort theatreorgan. I heard many brassbands but with Harry as the conductor it just was very special. Apart from learning to play the organ I wanted to play the Cornet because of the unique sound . What a great concert it was Harry and his all star Brass. The BBC theatreorgan was never installed in that studio..........however some 50 years later the former Avro radio organ was installed in the big studio..........it sounds great and every time I go there I remember me going with dad to hear the great concert Harry and his band.........great video with fantastic playing!!!

Absolutely brilliant performances from a World Class Band.
I was lucky enough to be conducted by Harry Mortimer in Jan 1973, when he conducted our town band in Hungerford, Berks. Harry was conducting Morris Motors Band and they gave a concert. Hungerford Band were fortunate enough to join Morris Motors for a few pieces in the concert - it was a wonderful experience and seeing this tribute to Harry brought back some lovely memories. So thank you for posting this video.

Thank you for sharing online - as I was unable to make the concert itself. My family have connections to the Mortimer family so this was a real trip down memory lane.

A fabulous band Maybe the MD should have looked at the lyrics of “Lo He comes with clouds descending “ before making such strange phrasing choices In saying that , the direction was faultless and , oh my, what a soprano cornet player!!Of course he could have been following the third verse 😉. The band is the best in the world to my ears. Bravo!!
