  • Cordelia Lynch speaks to the hostage negotiator who was at the centre of talks to free Thais held captive in Gaza.
Some 19 Thai nationals have been released by Hamas as part of a ceasefire deal with Israel.
But 39 were also killed by militants during the 7 October attacks - the highest number of deaths of any nationality besides Israel.
Dr Lerpong Sayed represented a Thai Shia Muslim group that took part in the talks.
He discusses how the group approached the negotiations, and why Hamas decided to free the Thai hostages.

I think she asked valid questions, why the Thai hostage negotiation was different from the rest and why they were treated better than the other hostages- it was preference based on religion and sympathy of the negotiators towards Palestine. I am Thai. The Thai government didn't even give any credits to Dr. Lerpong and the Thai parliament speaker who is also a Muslim (Dr. Wannor) for their efforts that successfully secured Thai hostages. Dr. Lerpong and his team engaged directly with Iran and were able to talk directly with Hamas officials in Iran to secure the release of Thai workers that were taken as prisoners. The Thai government was completely inept. And they don't give credits to the Muslim community at all. The release of Thai people wasn't even part of prisoners' exchange between Hamas and Israel, this was completely a different deal between Thai officials and Hamas. But Israel tried to hijack this effort. The Israelis are shameless. Truly a nation of thieves and murderers.

BBC News Thai investigation has discovered many Thai nationals living and working on Israeli farms are being exploited and abused. Tens of thousands of Thai labourers work in Israel under a scheme organised by the two governments. Many are subjected to unsafe working practices and squalid, unsanitary living conditions. "Between 2008 and 2013, a total of 122 Thai workers died in Israel, according to figures provided by Israeli Health Minister Yael German to Israeli daily Ha'aretz.
Out of the 122 dead, 43 died from "sudden nocturnal death syndrome", a mysterious death during the night while sleeping, according to an HRW report.
Such deaths, according to Phil Robertson, deputy director of the Asian division of HRW, have never been investigated by Thai or Israeli governments. In an interview, Robertson said 173 Thai workers interviewed by non-governmental organisation Kav LaOved had complained of long hours, being paid below the minimum wage, and not receiving proper equipment to protect themselves from the use of pesticides"

This is not the only person who said that the hostages were treated well, even in the israeli media they said that the ISRAELI hostages (not only the Thai, to answer her question) were treated well but idk why the western media is trying so hard to distort the truth !! Alon Ben-David, the senior defence correspondent for Israel's Channel 13, spoke of the treatment of captives by Hamas.
"Hamas tried to provide the required medications every day. But there were days when medicine was provided and others without," he said during a televised news segment.
He added that food was scarce, and all the captives had noticeably lost weight. (and that's obviously because their beloved Zionist state is starving 2 million people)
"The majority of hostages were together, holding meetings and lectures, sharing stories. Their activities and being together gave them strength to survive those underground conditions," added Ben-David.
"All the hostages were together, speaking of good conditions and treatment by the Hamas men. In addition to the medication, they were NOT subjected to violent treatment or torture."
He said that the released hostages spoke to the families of other hostages, stating that their family members were "fine and alive".
According to Haaretz, some of the captives followed Israeli media and were informed about ongoing events. One nine-year-old hostage, Ohad Munder, heard birthday greetings for him on Israeli TV.
