In Times New Roman... is Queens' smartest album

  • In Times New Roman... is Queens of the Stone Age's most interesting, inspired, and consistent record to date. It has a single identity running throughout: a dingy, crunchy brand of blues, mixed with warm melodic hooks, odd temporal illusions, and regular explorations into hazy desert rock.
In some way I'm finding hard to put in words, the album feels more grounded than the rest of Queens' catalogue. There's less bravado, less theatricality than their past few efforts, and the record is better for it.
There’s a line from Songs for the Deaf which I think perfectly summarizes this record: Metal heavy, soft at the core. It’s an S-tier Queens album, and that’s partly because of its honesty. It’s further proof, if we needed any, that art comes from pain and reconciliation and healing. And I hope it can happen again. Maybe it’ll take the world ending.
The upshot? It's good. Really good.

Made to parade was my leat favorite of the album, its growing on me tho, the final part of the song is amazing, it's what makes the song unforgettable. I love the album too, it's good from start to end, and it has no duds. I've been thinking about it a lot and I'm pretty convinced it's the most consistent album of their discography. Even songs for the deaf had a couple of songs that are not up to the greatness of the rest of the album. But this album is undoubtedly great, every song and every minute of it.

I don't know if anyone said it by now, but all of the music couldn't have been recorded simultaneously. Homme said in an interview the instrumentals themselves were finished early and it took him over a year to lay down the vocals. But I do agree that the songs feel like they were recorded at the same time, maybe this is true for the instrumentals.

My first listen to the album, I didn't think much of it as compared to the previous albums and I was ready to place it toward the bottom of my favorite QOTSA albums. Subsequent listen through have revised my opinion to a degree. I think now that the album is loaded with great songs destined to be classics for the band, but there are still other songs that don't quite land for me like Sicily (KIND of), and Straight Jacket Fitting. Time and Place was my dark horse favorite because of how that opening rhythm starts and then you get completely thrown for a loop when the drums come in and it becomes this fun, disjointed polymetric song that really grooves hard when your brain finally lines everything back up. That tier list at the end of the video...I'm going to have to differ with you on that one, "Like Clockwork" is absolutely S tier and "Villains" is A for me because it has one of my absolute fav QOTSA songs, "Feet Don't Fail Me Now". ITNR is an A for me, not quite an S in my opinion because of how it had to grow on me a bit before I really understood how good it was.

I hope they release the version where it doesn't fade out (hoping that they jam it for another 5 minutes lol). And Time and Space is my 2nd fave. Oddly, the most "QOSTA" track on the record, Paper Machete is my least fave... mainly because it sounds obvious compared to the rest of it.

On the flip side, Obscenery, Paper Machete, and Emotion Sickness are some of the "smartest" QOTSA songs. Made to parade is my least favorite of the album. If it wasn't for the killer second half, I wouldn't like it at all. I get it, and what it's trying to be, it's just super irritating to hear marching band style music over and over on an album that is otherwise VERY VERY VERY repeat-binge-listenable. Made to parage is meant to be appreciated infrequently compared to everything else on the album. Its like trying to each too much prosciutto or mayonnaise or using too much creamer in your coffee -- its nice and bitter and sarcastic like a QotSA song is meant to be, but its too concentrated and too unctious to be repeated often. I listened to this album on repeat for several hours on a long drive and had to fast forward through the parade-y parts. I marched in the Macy's parade in highschool forever ago, as a swarthy band nerd. The song is fine - just not repeatable. Definitely not the best song on the album. Definitely might be the worst. Being the worst song on a Queens album still makes it a better song than most.
Ive been trying to wrap my head around the album rankings, and its blowing my mind a bit. In what universe are any of the Queens albums a B tier? Were those rankings meant to be with an emphasis on "vs each other?"
Edit: oh and Fairweather Friend has Trent Reznor in the background. You can hear him clear as day. That song hits so hard in the feels. Its amazing. I just dont see what's not to love about it... Definitely not the best track on the album, but "a clunker?" Wow. The ending sticks with me. "Gonna pray for rain again and again; Fairweather Friend". Such a poetic way to say "F U".
