I was thinking about getting a dehydrator, mainly because of the amount of fruit my child consumes. Dehydrated fruit for the win. At least now I know I can do it in the oven. Thank you!

Good video.I almost bought a dehydrator until I saw this, then I checked out my Samsung electric oven, I didn't realize that it had a dehydrator setting on it, I tried it with some beef jerky strips, I let them hang down on the oven rack with a toothpick through each one to hold them. Came out great!

Neat that your oven can be set to 100 degrees. Clever to use dowels. I bought two dehydrators at yard sales for a total of $7 a few summers ago.

if you use beech dowels they have a natural antibacterial tendency which is why beech is usually used for kitchen tools etc.

My mamaw used to clean her car and dry it well put a lace curtain down then throw a huge amount of apples and spread them evenly then throw lace curtains on the hood and the trunk of the car then cover the apples with another tight lace sheet to keep bugs off and let the sun shine thru! She wud spread a bucket of apples on the car!! She cud get alot of apples done this way and it only took a good hot day to do it...I love mamaws they are so smart! It's a good way to do onions to so they don't stink u outta the house! If u don't want to use ur car can use sheet metal as well or anything flat and reflective.. Godbless and shalom

I wonder if the oven would work better if you left the apples in spirals. You could do onions this way too.

I would worry the onions would burn our eyes out of the house. Even cooking one onions in the house my eyes burn for hours after. But, it got me thinking.

I don't know what kind they are. The free kind. Kinda tart, a little green. My favorite dried are red delicious. But only if you get to them within 6 weeks off the tree. I know many people prefer the tart apples for drying. I must be an outlier. Thanks for watching. And yes you should get a huge sun dehydrator.

Would it be possible to use canning jars such as 4 oz or the jelly jars to put space in between your cookie sheets? So that way you would have more cookie sheets on rack....?

You can turn off the 12 hour beeping from hell by pressing the cooking time button, and Zero key at the same time for 3 seconds. The display will show 12 Hr or Hr (no shut off). Default is 12 Hr. Press 0 (zero) to toggle the feature on or off. Then press start/Set to save the setting.
Also, before you put your dowels away for an extended period of time, i'd recommend wiping them down with some mineral oil so they don't get destroyed after a few seasons of being in the dehydrator.

I originally had a novel I was writing to you and decided on this instead:
Please prepare food on counters... that's what they were made for. If you have too much clutter on your counters to make a video... throw everything on the counter in a box and give yourself the appropriate room and sanitary location to prepare and make a fantastic video. I wanted to listen to the important things you were sharing but I just couldn't get past why the heck you were preparing food on the floor. (busy mom is my guess since I've been in your shoes before but... don't post a public video trying to educate others if your not prepared yourself.) Put your best foot forward. : )
I only say these things because the world is cruel and nasty... I am only hoping to watch future videos' of yours without all the distractions. Take that with a grain of salt... maybe I'm the only one who couldn't hear what you were saying because of all the distractions.

You probably not the type to put in a real authentic homesteader work. In other countries all they have is the dirt pussies. It just amazes me that people love to voice how pathetic they are to the world. You mean people actually boast about how afraid of germs they are. Maybe that passes as wisdom these days instead of what it really is, Westernized fear disease.
