  • Judge Rotherham town centre for yourself. They started to destroy it ahead of Sheffield in the early 80s with stupid one-way systems and pedestrianization then allowed Parkgate shopping centre, which destroyed the Town of Parkgate as well. A must watch of 1950s Rotherham • Video

I went to Rotherham last Wednesday 4pm while 5:30. Like a lockdown. Most shops were shut apart from foreign barbers and vape shops, totally dead. I looked at the shut shops and though there is nothing to go in anyway if they were open, imperial building empty, shut. Then as I walked back up from the clock tower to all saints square, all hell seemed to be breaking loose, gangs of druggie lads with dogs had appeared from nowhere kicking about, looking at us few walking about, then I got up to all saints square, a huge gang of Somalian lads acting up, a gang of Romanians on the other side of the fountain, shouting and bawling, just idiots shouting everywhere I looked, nobody normal, all shops shut, I thought what have I walked into? I walked back up towards Sheffield rd, past the post depot and one of those pubs was open on the right, a big pub, as I approached, a load of yobbos were just going in to a massive commotion inside, kids all came running out into the road, I crossed over to avoid it all. I could hear shouting from inside. It would have been full of steel workers at one time, lovely building.
Rotherham is steeped in industrial history, there was some some massive firms in Rotherham.
    Such a shame.

Wellgate has become little India, and now foreigners are moving into town. It's full of druggies, and beggars, your right. Yes, and they call it progress. Where are the Police? It's become a dangerous pace, even after n the daytime.

Good film Tim and a fair representation of the town. You chose a 'busy' day - normally it's much quieter! Very interesting comments about Council Tax and where it ends up. I never really thought about it like that but you're spot on! Just discovered your channel searching for films on Rotherham (and yes, I've seen the amazing 1950s/60s ones) and it looks like you've got some great topics in there so that's me subbed and a lot of catching up to do! Cheers.

I went to Rotherham College back in 2007. I think colleges have been on the decline over the years. Back then, they used to have a part time prospectus with lots of adult courses (both evening and daytime), in just about every subject you can think of. A friend and I went in to enquire a few years ago, and they don't even have a part time prospectus anymore, as they do so little in the way of traditional adult education. Its all for school leavers and people who want to retrain in a new subject now.
I miss the old Central Library. When they knocked it down, the library moved to the new Riverside House, opposite the police station. The area where the Charter Arms was is being redeveloped, and they are planning to move the library to there, so I will look forward to seeing that when its done.

I so agree. They don't even have Language courses, or, electronics. The old 1920"s building is empty and stands derelict. Now they have made Rotherham University a town, as I predicted years ago, it will probably knocked down, for student accommodation, or house migrants?.

I enjoyed this video. I've not been to Rotherham town centre for years. I used to go a lot during the sixties and there were some lovely shops, different to the ones in Sheffield. I also remember they had trolley buses when I was a child. Really appreciate these videos. Thank you.

In the 70's the Corn Law was the Yorkshire bank, and at the end of the block to the rhs was the Essoldo cinema...the market used to sell live stock for slaughter and there was a slaughter house there in the 60's, everything has changed since I was a lad...nothing stays the same! Thanks for the video!

Rotherham was a relatively prosperous and well run town pre Metropolitan Borough days. It had probably the best and cheapest transport in the whole of the UK. Now like most other towns it is getting run down due to continuous cuts in government spending. One day all the lack of investment will come home to roost and we'll all have to pay for the catch up. Rotherham is my home town with a history going back well over a thousand years and Worts and all I'm still a proud resident. When I was a kid the Cinema at the top of the High Street was called the Essoldo and what is now the 'Corn Law' was the Crown Hotel. This was demolished to build a new Yorkshire Bank branch with a Furniture shop underneath , later converted to become the 'Corn Law Rhymer ' pub.

@@timawells No I've not met you Tim . From the looks of things I think Sheffield Council has it eyes on swallowing up Rotherham to become a massive suburb , even the Buses running around town seem to have been rebranded 'Sheffield' , I note Doncaster have had their branding put on the buses too. They are all supposed to be South Yorkshire buses. Rotherham is the only town in South Yorkshire to have all it's courts closed down too, even though the original town was the second largest, by population, in South Yorkshire. As soon as the courts closed they were demolished and the building wasn't that old. That's scuppered any chance of them reopening. The old West Riding court house is now the Town Hall. If anyone dies now in Rotherham you have to go to Doncaster Coroners Court and I know someone who had to sort their divorce through Bradford family court. It's a sad state of affairs . Rant over ...lol

I would like to go back to the original Rotherham and let us in Rother Valley go back to the rural districts. Its clear the bigger the organisation, the more the idiots in jobs there hide behind Lawyers, thinking they can get away with anything.

Well done. What a dump. Pestcos and Parkgate didn't help. They let it go to the dogs. To make it a university town. Now they are spending a fortune on the town.. The Organ from the Scala, still exists. I was talking to the man who restores theatre organs in Leicester, it's being restored. The other cinema was the Classic. Well done.

Rotherham went before Sheffield, they ruined it in the 1980s with a stupid one way system. The old Rotherham town centre of the 50s looked brilliant. So the organ is still in the Scala?

Good morning Tim. Yes, they made a right mess. I love looking at old pictures of Rotherham, but it's also, sad. So many shops gone years ago. Less complicated better times. The organ is being repaired and is in the theatre museum in Leicester. I was thrilled to know this. The bad news is, the Sala is about to be demolished, to make way for new developments. Close up, it's a lovely art Decco building. Looks like 1930s. Even more vandalism by the council. The question is, who wants to come to Rotherham after the grooming scandal?. But maybe it will change things around, like Barnsley?.and bring more people to town?. Car parking, why do people have to pay for it?. It would make more sense, to draw people into town, and let them spend. I have just thought. with Parkgate. So close, the new development will just make Parkgate even bigger joining the two as one?. They knocked the old library down and moved it to out of town, Now, they are proposing building a new one, back in town?. Wrap up warm, stay safe.

Rotherham is a labour run borough and always has been and they’ve destroyed it. They allowed the grooming of girls in care and blamed the girls when it came out. I don’t understand why people keep voting them in
