The same thing was discovered way back when by the NHL’s goalies. The masks offered a layer of protection that gave their goalies the ability to play at a level without a fear of being injured. The first goalie to wear one was clowned on, but the moment the other teams saw how he no longer feared the potential facial injuries and outperformed everyone, EVERY goalie from there on wore a mask.
There isn’t some curse or majik ju-ju from these NBA masks. It’s simply giving the players more courage to take more risks because of their new layer of physical protection.

It's simple psychology, wearing a mask makes them feel protected, and therefore likely to play more aggressively and take more risks. Get everyone to wear masks and the game will be better for it. Better yet, try an experiment, get them to play in football gear.

Interesting effect really. Studies have shown that drivers who recieved an extra training tend to cause more accidents because they think they are more capable now and drive more reckless.
I think there's a similar effect going on here. The mask protects them and there is less chance of further injury. Plus the boosted confidence. On the enemy's side you also have 3 things to consider.
1: The mask is a sign of injury. So going at it full force would be poor sportsmanship So the first couple of games the enemy players probably held back
2: Pressure. Masked players are known to perform great deeds. Going up against one is sure to cause a whole lot of pressure because everyone expects you to lose.
3: Supersticion. The player stepping on and trying to break the mask is a sign of somewhat believing in said curse turning this into a selffulfilling prophicy. If the player believes he can not win as long as his oponent is wearing a mask he dooms himself to failure.

    Few possibilities:
    - They played harder because they felt safer.
    - The other players were easier on them because they didn't want to hurt them.
    - The masks are subconsciously intimidating causing their opponents to play more passively.
    - Those wearing the mask makes them play harder because they want to live up to the legend.

If your opponents are a bit desoriented, you feel "safer" and everything is easier for you, becouse your opponents are a bit worse.

They should just wear full pads and body armor because it will prevent injuries to the rest of their bodies. They should be out there looking like medieval knights because it’s preventative. The reality is they make enough money to get injured occasionally. If you offered me 10 million to break my nose I’d do it for you.

  • @GrimmWF

it seems like a combination of self confidence and the effect the mask's have on an opponent, may it be an internal self caution due to knowing they are wearing due to injury, or be it the concept of the curse. as that one game where the team went in ready to play hard against the mask causes the mask player to be less self confident as they focused him as well as the team being more focused on him, once someone showed they feared the mask by trying to break it, the masks confidence came back and the fear of the curse over took the enemy team again. it really just seems like mental play, like a mind game.

Spartans wore masks and helmets designed to tunnel their vision and shallow their view. This eliminated distractions and some of the fear during the battle. Full concentration on what's in front of them, only focusing on the threat ahead while their stance and shield protected the man on their left, or this is just like Blinkers on a horse.

    • @NamaJeff

Everyone in this section said that it was because of the sense of protection it gave them but the first thing I thought of was horse blinders. Lowers their peripheral vision so they don't see the crowd when focused on the net and can only see what's in front of them.
