I’m sorry, but that On My Block scene actually physically hurt to watch
Beatriz Melanie Saravia Same girl😭
YASSSSS
Beatriz Melanie Saravia lmaooo mood😭
It's no surprise bc the Ronni chick is a whole Caucasian 😂
May I ask the ridiculously obvious question of why didn't they cast a Mexican American girl for the character? (Sorry if I'm missing something I've never seen the series)
As soon as I saw on my block in the intro I was like they’re about to go in because that was terrible
Lol
Otra cosa!!!!!
the on my block scene sounded like some kinda harry potter spell
lol
Lmfaooooo best comment
😂😂😂
That scene from on my block makes me cringe every time
Yamile Lugo it makes me want to crawl up in a ball 😭
Ikkkkkk
Every country that speaks Spanish has their own dialect and sound. They don’t all sound the same. That’s what a lot of us Americans fail to realize.
YEEEES THANK YOUUU
julia marenghi exactly that's what I'm saying.
and inside every of those countries there are a lot of different dialects and accents as well
Same as all other countries that speak english do not sound the same, as any country with any other part of the world. French canadians, moroccans and french from France sound very different, for exemple
Yes luego no nos entendemos entre nosotros y es toda una vaina hablar con otros latinos
The on my block scene AY DIOS MÍO QUE HORROR
Quería morir, ya tú sabes
Ana María está del asco
Ja jajajaja 😂
The linguistics nerd in me loves this shit LOL
Lol! Ikr??!! I was salivating as I scrolled through my feed!! 💯😍👊
Me too! 🥰
Any Spanish speaker can tell that Wagner moura isn't a native Spanish speaker... It's not an authentic Colombian accent either. He did a good job trying though and the storyline was great... But he made tons of mistakes in speaking throughout the show.
True, I'm brasilian and portuguese and español is very similar but the accent is totally different
Omg finally someone said it.
@Alexistaku bullshit... People from Colombia speak a differently than people from Venezuela unless theyre from border towns and it might get harder to tell the difference. Someone from Argentina won't speak the same as a person from Ecuador or Perú. Cubans don't sound like Puerto Ricans. Mexicans Spanish sounds nothing like the Spanish from South American countries. There's a difference and if you ve been around you can tell.
@Alexistaku "we don't have a distinctive dialect, even tho the Accent from Antioquia is the most famous."
"we are the country with the most diverse dialect in the region"
There are a couple of contradictions there 😉. Just because others can't imitate it as easily that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
czcams.com/video/ozcx2-YRGgI/video.html
@Alexistaku I am from Mexico and I can assure you that we DO notice the Colombian accent, you may not see someone trying to imitate the accent because you are Colombian, but we do notice the difference in the cadence, tone, etc. of the voice. A lot of people actually find the Colombian accent really nice and attractive. So, it may not be as obvious as other countries accents (Argentinian fe)but it exists xd
I have never seen a Spanish speaker use or even know the term: "Latinxs"
It's a term to appease the alphabets
Especially considering the correct pronunciation of that made up word would be "Lateen-equis". Double fail.
It's because he's at UCLA
Fucked up right out of the gate
Bro for real… I was like what is he saying
Wagner Moura definitely didn’t sound like a native speaker from Colombia. However, a bit of the Brazilian Portuguese came out when he said “presidente” The D’s in Portuguese are pronounced very strongly. A native speaker of Spanish would’ve pronounced it softer, more like a “th” sound 😁
If he was going for a Colombian-sounding form of speech, he should've done all of the corrections above, plus incorporated slurred "shh"-ing in his speech (Fellow Colombians know what I'm talking about). Pablo Escobar was from Medellín (he was Paisa), and they tend to speak like that. He didn't do too poorly, but he could've done better...
@Allison Hunter what do you mean like: "Im white"? I'm latina and white... unless italians aren't considered white anymore.
@Allison Hunter ah ok. Just saying that italians, Spaniards, portugueses, French are the real Latinos. Please don't say latinxs, it is impossible to pronounce it.
Allison Hunter What is "Latinx"??? Wtf. Latin people lived like 20 centuries ago and they were white, lol. You make no sense at all. What you really mean is "Native American blood". My God......
@@meeguelangelo you're right and as fellow colombian I can attest to that. However they should've hired at least a native-spanish speaker to begin with, if it was a colombian even better. But as far as a portuguese mimicking an accent from a language that it's not his mother tongue he did pretty well , although as you mentioned , an inaccurate portrayal of a Paisa accent. But honestly , only colombians would've realized that his accent was not that good, and he hasn't received any backlash on that account.
maybe just hire latinos to do the roles...just a thought
Yeah instead of a white person that could "pass" as a latino
The guy who did Pablo Escobar in Narcos is latino. Or do you mean you want somenbody from exactly the same part of the country, with exactly the same background as the real guy. In the case of Escobar I am sad to inform you that the right person for the part got shot in 1993.
13tuyuti there is another series called “el patrón del mal “ where the actor that plays Pablo is Colombian and looks like the real Pablo. So... there are actors that could play it in a better way.
@@donnasaned7791 I also like the portrayal of Escobar in El Patron del mal better than the one in Narcos. The actor put in a trememdous amount of work to get Escobar's accent and way of speaking right and he did a great job but even he isn't 100% exactly like the real Escobar, which would have been impossible.
I think it is a valid artistic choice to make the escobar in Narcos a bit different than the real one. It is a work of fiction after all and the slightly awkward, puffy and pasty Pablo of El Patron del mal would not have fitted the story the makers of Narcos wanted to tell.
Yess
When he said you wouldn't know Wagner Moura speaks portuguese... Wow. A native Spanish speaker would actually immediately know he's not Colombian or even Hispanic, even though he does a great job, his Brazilian accent is very thick
Fr. The moment I heard him talk for the first time I instantly knew he was Brazilian or Portuguese and I have no linguistics bullshit background
Thank you!! I came here for this! He does not seem fluent at all. Arguably one of the worst Spanish accents I’ve ever heard. It’s like he’s trying to speak Portuguese but half ass Spanish comes out
THE ON MY BLOCK ONE IS SOOO BAD I CANT
Everytime you say "Latinx," all of our ancestors roll in their graves.
ikr
U mean all of us on top of our ancestors right? I DESPISE the term. It’s so infuriating
Tony Montana's accent is iconic and if they had tried to be really realistic it might not have had the same popularity or quotability as it does with the way that Pacino made the character speak.
AYY FUK YOO MANG
Tony sounded Panamanian lol.
It became iconic because the quality of the movie. But it is still a terrible accent. People just forgive him because he is Al Pacino and it was a classic movie.
i came here to see somebody pathetically defend this abortion of an accent, please stop
I'm Cuban and me and my whole family agree that's an accurate accent for a FOB Cuban speaking English. It's not a Miami Cuban accent; he's supposed to be from Cuba and that's what my uncles sound like.
Pacino's accent when he speaks Spanish though, is terrible.
ive never scene on my block but after that im not going to watch it. also ive read tweets where that main chick is trump supporter and talks bad about immigrants so its weird seeing her portray someone who is a child of immigrants.
Are you talking about ronnie hawk? That's weird. She was on a Disney show where she played a Latina. And she's working with so many Latin actors.
Carol Campoverde yea that’s her. Old tweets of her supporting trump all the way came out and it started a major black lash on her since it’s weird that one she’s portraying a Latina and two that she supports someone who doesn’t support the Latino community. She quickly deleted those tweets. I think that should have given to someone who actually speaks Spanish and English since that’s the character but I guess not. Her tweets are probably in google or in a CZcams video of someone calling her out on her privilege to portray an immigrant yet she hates them herself.
@@moniqueflorez1974 wow. I didn't know that. That's crazy. I actually liked her on the Disney show.
Also told her mexican castmate that mexicans were taking educational oppurtunities from whites
@@isabellaguzman6920 what's?!! That's so disrespectful and ignorant.
The scarface accent was so so epic that it's his own thing. But true, is a terrible spanish accent
Have you never Heard a Cuban talk in Miami??????
@@LosHomiesDre hi, Cuban from Miami here. Al Pacino makes a good attempt but his accent interpretation is still wildly exaggerated.
@@xiii000 i agree that it’s exaggerated but it’s not terrible imo
I like that you mention it's his own thing, if he pulled off perfect accent then it just wouldn't of been Tony Montana.
@@LosHomiesDre Yes, they talk like Manny
Wagner Moura: *speaks in spanish*
Captions: *say that he's speaking portuguese*
LMAO it killed me
Imagine if tony montana was a real person how he would react to be called latinx lmao😂😂😂
The thing that made me so mad about the chick from On My Block is that Olivia is supposedly the child of undocumented Mexican immigrants (who were deported) while living in Houston, Texas- a portion of the state with a very healthy Latino presence. Nothing about that suggests she would be anything other than a proficient, Native Spanish speaker... and we get this bullshit, Rosetta Stone Lesson 1 accent. Y I K E S.
and she also supports trump, after I learned that I stopped watching that joke of a show
“Lesson 1 Rosetta Stone Accent” 🤣🤣🤣☺️
I know people who learned Spanish as a second language with a better accent than her.
She's not even Mexican lol
@@sarahjames7664lol go to Texas and you’ll be surprised how many Mexican trump fans there are
Cliff Curtis, a Maori New Zealander, spent half his career playing Chicanos and the other half playing Middle Easterners. That's why he is amazing at doing those two accents.
What? Cliff Curtis isn't Mexican? Oh, the deception!
@@lehabimrodriguez2337nawh he is Pacific Islander
The little girl at the end wasn't even delivering the line in real time. It's clearly dubbed.
The On My Block scene makes me physically cringe
The Tony Montana accent is maybe not the perfect Cuban accent, but at the same time it's not as bad as you say. I know some Latinos sounding quite similar.
His attitude and mannerisms were spot on at least
I HATE the Scarface accent. I can't tell you how many fucking times growing up that people would try to tell me "it's a Cuban accent, it's so good" then I'd tell them I'm Cuban and part of the first generation in my family to speak English and they would just laugh and be like "omg! So your whole family sounds like that" no, they definitely don't "well your family is weird then" it's not a fucking Cuban accent
Exactly my Father nor my uncle doesn't sound anything like that!
Yeah but manny does a good accent cause he’s actually Cuban
If you go to Miami a lot of Cuban Americans sound like him 😭
AYY FUK YOO MANG
Funny, I’m Cuban and I love his accent. Plus not everyone has the same voice
Thank god someone said something about Scarface. I’m not a Spanish speaker but it’s sooooo clear that that accent is atrocious.
Unpopular opinion: Scarface is a horrible movie full of racist stereotypes that I stopped watching about a third of the way through.
@Paul In Kyushu Eh, some people aren't good at accents naturally.
Also, how did he stay in Cuba in 1983 lol?
@Paul In Kyushu I know you didn't explicitly say they were in Cuba, but it's a rational assumption that saying "X community" means the "X people" living in their country of origin, not immigration/refugees. Sorry for misunderstanding what you meant.
@Paul In Kyushu Thank you! 😁
Also, I didn't consider your reply too harsh or strong, but I greatly appreciate the sentiment.
talkingbowl yo deadass you mad crazy how you gon call a movie like Scarface horrible yo taste just horrible cuz not the movie
Hey? When was the last time we had an episode of "Pero Like" on "Pero Like?"
What are you gonna review next? Britix accents? Frenx? Xinese?
I don’t agree with Latinx, but it’s because it has “o” as a suffix. French has “ch”, not “o”, or “a”.
XD
Sorry Wagner Moura Paisa accent was a flop! Not remotely close, you can hear that there is a somewhat Brazilian undertone...
I feel the same way!! I feel like his tempo is too slow
It is literally like a gringo speaking Spanish in their 5th lesson 😖
Ok but also please do a video about the wrong Spanish accents being used in movies, like when they hire a Puertorrican to play a Mexican and they don’t change their accent, that always makes me mad
I've never seen that.
I'm all for this video since it always bothered me that the spanish accents were off in movies but latinX? Come on...
This dude said "latinx" 💀
not gunna lie it was hard to listen to the on my block part with ronni
Al Pacino’s Hispanic accent was terrible 😩
Yeah, it was one of those things that transcends language.
It was the worst.
I not meng!!😂
Still a great movie though
Kali Uchis didn’t say it wasn’t.
i realy couldnt stand that Narcos picked that guys for Pablo, i mean is it really that hard to find a Colombian!!!!!!!
Solanny Andrea I guess the film industry really hates any type of Latinos
@@GirlWhoCouldFlyy the actor was latino
@@Datrus969 his Portuguese different language
Deeze the actor was Brazilian. He speaks Portuguese. Totally different
The director is brazilian.. Pedro Padilha, and his go to autor is Moura. Tropa de elite is na example
Rami Malek's spanish in Buster's Mal Heart is so good. He said he has 2 aunts that are Colombian and he lived in Argentina for some time.
Amazing video! I would love to see more of these kinds of videos :)
You can easily tell Moura is brazilian. That sounds so much as a brazilian talking in spanish.
Yeah especially when he Said the word sola you can hear the Brazilian pronounce in he's voice when he Said the letter L I'm not Hispanic nor Brazilian but I can clearly notes the difference between both languishes
I love “Breaking Bad” but man they got some pretty bad ones too
Honestly I think Wagner Moura's acting overshadowed his accent. I understand the criticism though. Marawan Kenzari in the movie The Angel, portrayed Ashraf Marawan an Egyptian politician, but his Tunisian arabic accent (different from an Egyptian Arabic accent) was very apparent. No disrespect to the actor, but he wasn't as charismatic as Wagner Moura's Escobar, so that didn't help either.
I was like "oooh this seems interesting" but I stopped taking him seriously when he called it a "latinx identity"
Same
“Pablo Escobar’s” Colombian accent is HO-RRI-BLE
When they made Scarface Al was actually surrounded with Cubans that corrected him in every line to sound more Cuban, still they wanted him to have more of his “own” accent so the character would be more iconic and make the character different from other Cuban characters. I also think people discuss his accent just to prove a point, some people said that the character Manny had a bad Cuban accent when he is literally cuban born I Havana. Then we also need to have in mind that just because you are from the same country you don’t have the same accent when you speak English, me for example I sound like I am Russian when I speak English when I have no connection to russia.
Lol Manny’s accent was literally perfect, Idk who the hell would say that. I’m Cuban and I noticed Manny was Cuban from the first moment I heard him
Wow This was amazing to watch I'm in a Intro to Spanish Linguistics class right now so all of the stuff that this professor is talking about is retaining in my mind I have parents from Central America, but we speak both English and Spanish, but I wanted to study Spanish as an undergraduate so I'm able to comprehend how this language works Because of this class, I understand the variations of Spanish so much better
Gracias para este video porque me fascina todo aspecto de la lingüística española
I wonder if Pepe Rapazote's accent in Narcos sounded good or not because he speaks Portuguese like Wagner Moura but his is european
One of the reasons Cliff Curtis was so good, in my opinion, is the fact he is Māori, and thus probably can speak the Māori language to some degree. It’s an amazing language, with soft Rs that melt into sounding like Ds and Ls, and other consonants that resemble Southern European languages such as Spanish. I’m also a New Zealander and I’m conversational in Māori, and I find imitating the way Hispanic people speak a little bit easy (but it’s probably shit lol), probably because of this.
Pause at 4:47 Ruby is me watching this for the first time
“Latinx identity”
Or just have Latino/as play the roles for Latino/a characters?
I disagree somewhat with the idea that the goal is to have actors represent their own identity. This is acting, and the point is to inhabit a character's identity. I think the goal ought instead to be to represent the character's identity faithfully and realistically.
But yeah, regardless, stuff like Scarface wouldn't and shouldn't fly now.
I love this so much has me practicing my Spanish more now lol
The fact that cliff Curtis is Maori helps with the t’s
-Be me, a South American
-See this video on your feed
-Click on it
-Hear the abomination that it is "Latinx" not even 1 minute in
-Inmediatly leave a comment and quit
Is it really that hard to find an actor who’s Latino to play a Latino? Like really?
Latino not a race anyone can be Latino
@@brendandolan7157 what an interesting concept you have.
I cringe so hard at “LatinX”...
This will be fun. It's nice to see the differentiation in the way people talk, especially with two languages! Good on ya, Pero Like.
Make more videos like this please!!! Super interesting !!!!!! =)
He was being nice to the girl from On My Block. Twitter went off on her.
Had this guy at Chapman, the worst professor I have ever had! Didn’t prepare us for exams and failed over half the class! Glad to see he’s going good tho!
I'm not a Spanish native but I bet this guy was raised in the US. Because it's only US born or US raised latinos that say latinX.
Ronni hawk ain’t even Spanish. She using my culture as a career choice
verdade
lol so sad she wants the money so bad to the point of this. Take in mind she is a Trump supporter
Tampoco te vuelvas loco, que la cultura es de todos.
Spanish people are from Spain. Stop using that word to refer to Latin Americans. You are as silly and ignorant as that Ronni Hawk..
Déjate de joder es actuacion
Buzzfeed trying to copy that other channel with dialect voice
It's hard to read "Latinx" because in my head it says "Latinks" instead of "Latin-X", the latter which sounds like a cool title for a Mutant X-type show.
HAHA! That last example with the emphasis on pronouncing the b sound had me dying 😂
the ronnie hawks one had me dying bruh omg
I get hiring actors who are from the same place as the character, but if they’re suppose to portray an actual persona in the film, they need to look like the character.
Kylie Shore in the case of narcos they could have used the same actor Telemundo used 10 yrs ago when they first made the show. Or simply looked at bit more, thats what casting is for
Hi- Really enjoyed your video. I'm a Cuban born actor and still I'm always being asked to do the accent, and i hope i do it justice. You're right about "Scarface", very entertaining but Pacino's accent is OTT!
Al Pacino in the devils advocate subway scene lol
Cliff Curtis no es mexicano???!!

Let's be honest, we all watched this video for Scarface. That shit is legendary in how bad it is😆😂. Still a classic movie.
This video is 2 years old and I was interested until I heard LatinX?? What in the hell does that even mean
You should have reviewed Jeffrey Wright, as Peoples Hernandez in Shaft!
As soon as I heard Pablo Escobar on Narcos I knew the actor was Brazilian
"languague expert" using the word "latinx" lol okay
The worst example of this that wasn't included is probably Gustavo Fring from Breaking Bad
*cough* wired *cough*
otro video sobre Colombia por favor! 🇨🇴🇨🇴
En "On My Block" casi muero, necesitan eliminar esa escena😂😂😂
I showed my mom that scene from "On my Block" AND SHE STARTED PRAYING LMAO I was dying
"Lantinx"... now THAT is offensive.
That Don Pablo didn't sound antioqueño ni puta mierda.
Props to Cliff Curtis for "Smiley" he did one hell of a job.
From a person coming From Medellín, Colombia, I can tell you Wagner Moura's accent is nota even close to what we sound like. It was hard, from portuguese to the paisa accent
To be more specific, from the Bahian to the Paisa accent. He was born and raised in northeast Brazil, but the Bahian accent doesn't sound anything like the accent heard in cities further north. It's a bit closer to the Carioca accent. I enjoyed my time in Medellín. It's hard to find good Bandeja Paisa from anywhere else.
2:54 - In Polish this word (written "cipo") is an insult meaning "you pussy". :D
Amazing Video
Love this!
De paso, alguien sabe si va a haber segunda temporada de On my block?
i don’t know how he didn’t lose it when talking about whatever the hell the girl was trying to say
"We need to get an actor to represent the identity that they are" dude, do you even know what an actor is?
Great! even Pero Like is getting “Inspiration” from other channels
Cliff Curtis is so underrated. I was shocked when I found out he was a New Zealander. I always thought he was American.
You could have mentioned anyone from Breaking Bad. Great show, but awful spanish
Something to keep in mind is that the Latinos in Albuquerque don't speak Spanish very well. I live here. I know. So, in that way, it was probably really accurate. ;)
Estan Arturo como un grupo de ninos... Arturo??? la palabra es Actuando, no Arturo LOL.
Stopped at Latinx
Pains me to see people trying to make latin-x happen
as audience watching shows about latinos shouldnt the audience demand for the more of the actors portraying latinos/as to be latino/a?
I'd like to see an analysis on Gus Fring's Spanish lol
damn yeah, mostly bad
Horrible
That broad in the end portraying the Mexican American was the worst on this list. That was atrocious.
