You'll learn to re-jig your brain when looking at ambiguous shapes and eventually you might even be able to start creating double meanings! We also examine how foreign brands like Coca Cola and Lays are rendered in Thai, mimicking the original English text.

ขอบคุณมากครับ ที่นำปัญหาฟ้อนต์ไทยมาถกเถียงกันในที่นี้ครับ ระบบฟ้อนต์ที่มีความผิดเพี้ยนไปมาก เพราะไม่ได้อิงประวัติศาสตร์การพิมพ์ ตั้งแต่คอมพิวเตอร์แบบตั้งโต๊ะ(Desktop)เกิดขึ้นและเข้าสู่ระบบ GUI(Graphics user interface) ใหม่ก็มีนักออกแบบตัวอักษรอิสระที่ส่วนใหญ่ไม่จบการศึกษา Graphic design และที่สำคัญคือ Typography ในระบบการพิมพ์ที่ใช้ไมก้าเป็นมาตรวัดในระบบการพิมพ์ ผมคิดปัญหานี้เป็นปัญหาหนึ่งที่น่าขบคิดเพราะราชบัญฑิตเกี่ยวกับระบบบัญญัติศัพท์การพิมพ์ยังระเลยเรื่องนี้อยู่

Errrr… what I noticed watching this video is that I read only the Thai version - ทน but not the English one. I actually had to pause the clip and think what the letters are (I mean, the Latin ones).
This is what happens with my brain when I study a new foreign language. I forget all the previous ones!!!😂

The Thai font used on packages of Breeze laundry detergent looks like "Usa" if looked at very briefly. Perhaps some subliminal messaging going on there.

These loopless fonts have been evolved from cursive writing. On daily basis, people generally write in a loopless cursive form. This style of cursive is not official but evolves naturally from the writing method using pen or quill. The oldest loopless cursive writing that I found is from Kosa Pan's letter to Monsieur De Lagny dated backed to King Louis XIV's period, which surprisingly similar to the modern cursive writing. You can take a look at how people write in real life and you will find the logic behind these loopless fonts.

As a Native English speaker learning Thai to Speak and read/write Thai is awesome, ( I looked at the other fonts and went...nope... what the !! ) But Thank You SJR !, this makes sense :)
The loopless Thai fonts look more modern, comparable to sans-serif fonts in English.
Thank you so much for this in-depth clarification of this font issue! I always had a problem reading signs in Thai when they use these kinds of simplified fonts. From now on, I will be able to read it!

Just when I thought I'd learnt the Thai font pretty good after a week or so of studying, and was ready to go outside (in Thailand) and practice reading, only to find out the non official simplified fonts are much more common than the traditional fonts and I couldn't read anything 😭
You will get there! Took me a while. These tips will help you. Practice, practice, and more practice and you will get there!

One of the most annoying thing about watching Thai PBS is while I am using it to help learn Thai way out in the East coast of the US, feeling like I cannot read because of the font has always been frustrating 😅

On one of my outing day with my colleagues, we played a game that cards of letter were given and we have to rearrange them into a word. The cards are W S S O O U J ษ.
Rotating and flipping some cards and you get the answer OOUWSSษJ which is ออกพรรษา an important day in buddhism.

Sometimes Thai ppl get confused too. In a game community that we have a character name Silver Wolf when writing in Thai paragraph we saw her shorten name "SW" in Thai "รพ" which means hospital.
