    That looks like a pretty solid machine.👍🏾 I own a Sony SL-HF 1000 Betamax player and I absolutely love it!

    Man, you were so lucky to find an SL-HF100 with a working VU meter. Most of the VU LEDs in my machine were dead. As you mentioned it seems to be quite a common problem. I actually replaced the whole board with a generic VU meter from A*iExp**ss. Looks and works quite nice, but it's a bit too small and I had to mount it with hot glue and sticky tape. At least the panel/lid on my machine is still intact.

      @video99couk  Před 3 lety

      Yes, that's the sort of LED VU meter board I was thinking of. Were you able to calibrate the zero level?

    • @rolfbeil
      @rolfbeil Před 3 lety

      @@video99couk Yes, zero was no problem, but it's a bit 'nervous' at higher volume levels and it is in no way calibrated. Looks quite nice, though.

    My UK beta collection is growing too...currently 4 x hf100 and 3 x hf950, not all fully working but still great to look at 😅😅😅

    I have two of the HF100's - one of them was bought new from John Lewis when they first came out and touch wood it is still working well. (I also have an EVS-9000E and even a V5000 camcorder that I bought back in 1991 - that one I need to re-cap though).

      Recapping is unfortunately a time consuming process on almost any equipment.

    What a nice treat to get a working Betamax in the post :) That machine's US NTSC cousin would be the SL-HF450. That is a neat update to Resolve and nice to know as when I use it at work it's either with ProRES files or 10 Bit YUV uncompressed, also if you are running a Mac with the M1 CPU upgrade to 17.1 or 17.2 to the M1 native version (holy cow it renders fast).

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  Před 3 lety

      That Beta has been running tapes for much of the weekend and hasn't missed a beat, so it's looking very good.
      I've been waiting a long time for DV-AVI support in Resolve. It's now the go-to software. I have a M1 Mac Mini and it's sluggish. For the same money, a PC would be hugely faster, but I need one actual Mac for my business.

    Don't forget the breaking loading gear in the lacing block, that's a relatively common fault. Also check the reels don't wobble - if they do, then the plastic underneath has cracked.

  • @DuckGWR
    @DuckGWR Před 3 lety

    Love the Betas with the transparent window in the top to spy on your tape, only thing cooler is a nice visible toploader tape basket or the drawer loading Betas, love that you can just run em with the whole transport clear out the front
    I've got a beautiful Japanese version of the SL-2500, the early front loader with the two separate tape doors for if there is a cassette inside or not, and the poor display is poisoned so dim it may as well be off. Switching the dimmer switch into "bright" is barely any better.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  Před 3 lety

      The SL-2500 has a different display problem, and it's usually fixable! See: czcams.com/video/_9CVPghyCcY/video.html

    Well that machine is not in bad condition really, maybe a bit of checking and cleaning of the deck but it works :-D.
    I'm thinking the owner didn't know about the rear mains switch, so it looked dead.
    It's a dam shame about the florescent display, iv'e seen many old vcr's looking rather dim.
    Scott does a good impression of being dis-interested at times lol.
    I like the sneaky cut and glue hinge fix, if the holding stalk of plastic was gone, i would cut up fridge magnets and stick them to the flap and above the hidden buttons, black marker would cover the brown magnets.
    Glue that starts to conduct, i've had to remove that stuff as it stopped the tx stage of a transceiver working.
    Sorry long waffle, but i give you value :-D

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  Před 3 lety

      Owner complained of the deck not running, only accepting and ejecting tapes. I've run 5 tapes through it this weekend and it's not skipped a beat.

    Once again , amazing video. I didn’t known that Beta have also HiFi like the VHS 6 Heads have.
    What’s the difference in audio between Beta HiFi and Betacam SP tapes ??
    Regards from Spain 😉

    Do you have a link to information regarding Davinci support for dv.avi? Can't seem to find documentation on this.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  Před 3 lety

      Their press release seems to indicate decoding AV1 clips rather than AVI, which might be a typo:
      www.cined.com/davinci-resolve-17-2-released-faster-startup-live-save-on-by-default/
      So I tried importing a DV-AVI captured from miniDV via Pinnacle Studio, and it worked flawlessly.

    • @jlfeakes
      @jlfeakes Před 3 lety

      @@video99couk I believe they're referring to the recently developed AV1 codec in that documentation. Used mainly in internet based content. I've never explored working with dv in Resolve at all to be honest so it's interesting to hear your success with them. Have you captured directly into Resolve via firewire?

      What's the problem?

    • @Nod4750

      @@video99couk Hi , I have loads of old Hi-8 tapes and a cannon video camera to play them on plus a spare. I have purchased a Clearclick video to digital converter which works brilliantly. I cleaned the heads in the Cannon and for the first 6-7 tapes it worked well and I was able to retrieve the footage and transfer to the USB stick and save accordingly. On playback the next set of tapes are not viewable or transferable due to very poor quality (fuzzy full screen) on playback. I have noticed that the tape appears to be rounded over on the edges and not flat, is this affecting the picture quality on playback and is there anything that can be done or is just that the tape head on the Cannon needs a better clean? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
      Cheers
      Lee
